"Then I guess I'm crazy,"
Leslie said.

"Oh?"

Leslie kicked her foot and slammed
the office door shut. "Want to see absolutely crazy?"

Before Bobby could respond Leslie
jumped into his arms and kissed him.

The hours went by and the diner
slowly cleared out. Sullivan stood outside taking a breather. He had heard
enough stories of his father and brother to last him a lifetime already. It
felt good to hear it all. To know that the life he hadn't lived had been good
anyway. The life he had lived, in Virginia with the man he thought was his
father had been a damn good life. Henry Chasen had given Sullivan everything he
needed to become the man he is now. A man strong enough to face terrible circumstances.
A man smart enough to know when to make a tough decision. And a man crazy
enough to believe in love and throw everything in the air to see what would happen.

Sullivan felt hands wrap around the
front of his body. He looked down and saw Jess's hands interlock around his
stomach. He felt her head rest against his back. His heart instantly began to
race and everything warmed throughout him.

He understood love.

He loved it.

"Thank you for being
here," Jess said. "I can't imagine what it would have been like
without you."

"I'm thankful for being here
too, Jess. This whole thing has been unbelievable. But it's just getting
started though. There's plenty of good and bad left for me to figure out. That
much I know for sure."

"Turn around, Sullivan. Look
at me."

Sullivan turned and faced Jess. He
held her and kissed her. They didn't need anymore words right then. As far as
Sullivan cared, the greatest thing in life was in his arms. With Jess, he felt
he could face anything. Even if that meant going back to settle the rest of his
life. He needed to visit Henry Chasen's grave up in Alexandria. Then he needed
to face his mother in South Carolina. But all that would come in time. Sullivan
wasn't going to let the present slip away.

When he and Jess stopped kissing,
he put his arm around her and said, "Come on, let's go inside. See who's
lingering."

They walked into the diner and
Sullivan stopped at the kitchen door to admire the sight before his eyes.

Richie stood in front of a picture
of Bob. His face stone like, but his eyes glazed over. A war veteran who
understood more about life, death, and pain than anyone else.

Bobby leaned over the counter with
a towel on his shoulder, his eyes glued to Leslie as she held a cup of coffee.
He smiled and said something that caused Leslie to burst out laughing.

Tyler sat across from Katey at a
table in the far corner. She nibbled on a pen with a flirty attitude that had
to have been torturing Tyler's heart.

At the front of the diner, Sullivan
saw the OPEN sign reflecting against the window. He kept his arm around Jess
and walked her over to it. Inside that diner was the life that mattered most.

Sullivan pulled the small chain on
the OPEN sign.

The day may have been over, but they
were just preparing for tomorrow and whatever it would bring.
