I decided to become a writer in the third grade, after winning a “Why My Mother is the Greatest” essay contest and seeing my entry published in a major newspaper. But everyone told me it's too hard for novelists to get published, so after college I spent fourteen years as the CEO of my own jewelry store chain before writing my first book.
I've been oh-so-lucky to see my books hit bestseller lists all over the world, including the
New York Times
list and the
list, and win awards including the Golden Quill and
's Top 10 Romance of the Year, making this second career a real dream come true. I live in Southern California with my husband, our three young adult children, and one constantly shedding cat, and I still think my mother is the greatest!
My heartfelt thanks:
To my editor, Audrey LaFehr, for always knowing how to make my stories better.
To my critique partner, Terri Castoro, for her willingness to read it again no matter how many times I decide to Change Everything.
To my husband, Jack, for encouraging this all-consuming career, even though he thought he was marrying a jeweler, not a writer. And also for keeping up with my website with surprisingly little nagging.
To my son, Brent, for designing my website in the first place and formatting all of my books.
To my daughter, Devonie, for the brilliant new blurb.
To Ian Archibald, Project Manager for the Burntisland Heritage Trust, for information regarding the search for the Charles I shipwreck.
To seventeenth-century poets George Herbert, Robert Herrick, Richard Lovelace, and Samuel Rowley, for inspiring Trick's poetry (and generously—if unwittingly—allowing him to borrow a line or two for period flavor).
To my official First Readers—Alison Bellach, Taire Martyn, and Karen Nesbitt—for lots of laughs and invaluable feedback.
To Herb, Joan, Ken, and Dawn Royal, for reading and commenting on the sort-of-spiffed-up version (and, as always, for being willing to make fools of themselves promoting their daughter's/sister's/sister-in-law's books).
To Libby Graham and Andrew Metz, for touring me though the used bookstores on Charing Cross Road and sending hard-to-find research material from the UK.
To my fearless and intrepid Publicity Team—Deb Alexander, Dick Alexander, Jane Armstrong, Robin Ashcroft, Joyce Basch, Alison Bellach, Caroline Ballach, Diana Brandmeyer, Carol Carter, Terri Castoro, Vicki Crum, Elaine Ecuyer, Shirley Feit, Dale Gordon, Darren Holmquist, Lori Howell, Irm Jawor, Taire Martyn, Cindy Meyer, Lynne Miller, Amanda Murphy, Karen Nesbitt, DeeDee Perkins, Nancy Phillips, Jack Poole, Stacey Royal, Wendi Royal, Sandy Shniderson, Diena Simmons, Connie Story, Stacy Volpe, and Julie Walker—for enthusiastically going above and beyond.
And, as always, to all the readers who have taken their time to write and tell me how you feel about my stories, for being my inspiration.
Thanks to each and every one of you—you're what keeps me writing.
