After the meal, it was time for the speeches. Ed and Susie had one to give, though I was a bit embarrassed when they stood to talk.

I'd lied to them back then. Alicia and I tried to trick them. How could they ever forgive and respect me after that?

“I always knew Carter was a fine young man,” Susie began. “No matter what has happened in the past, Ed and I were sure that his heart was in the right place.”

“You do love our granddaughter.” Ed nodded at me. “Don't you, Carter?”

“With all my heart,” I said, loud enough for all to hear. “I want to be by her side forever.”

The crowd gushed over my declaration, but I didn't say it for them. I said it for
her.
Alicia took my hand under the table and squeezed, our silent way of saying “I'm glad you're mine.”

“Then we've decided.” Ed cleared his throat and pulled out some papers. “You're married now. As promised, you will be receiving your full inheritance – which, of course, includes the house and a special wedding gift.”

He placed an envelope before Alicia and gestured for her to open it. Inside was a check – for five hundred thousand dollars!

“Grandpa, this is too much,” she said, tears in her eyes.

“You'll need it for starting your family,” Susie said. She shook her finger at me. “And you, mister, had better get started making those grandkids right away.”

I laughed. “Yes, ma'am.”

After that, it was time for Alicia to throw her bouquet to the waiting ladies. She closed her eyes and tossed it behind her.

“It's mine,” howled Heidi.

“No way! Move your fat butt,” cried Lacey.

They pushed and shoved, jumping in the air as they flailed for the flowers. The bouquet sailed over their heads – and landed right in the arms of Elle, who hadn't seemed one bit interested in the whole thing. She caught it with a surprised yelp.

“Wow, nice catch, Pink,” Jayce called out from his spot at the bar. “But however will you get married if you're headed off to the nunnery?”

“Jayce, I swear to God I'm going to kill you!”

Brett and Max laughed their asses off as she beat him over the head with the bouquet.

Then came the first dance, where I got to hold Allie close and sway to the song we'd chosen together. It was the one playing on the radio when we first kissed a decade ago.

“I think the wedding's gone pretty well so far,” I said softly in her ear. “And when we're alone in bed tonight, it's gonna get even better.”

“Mm.” She shivered. “I can't wait.”

“You know what
I
can't wait for? To spend the rest of my life with you.”

It was a big promise and a tall order coming from a guy like me. Yes, it meant giving up my bachelor days – but she was worth it.

Just like Brett told me, being with the woman you love is like winning the lottery every single day, and Alicia made me feel like the richest man in the world.

“The song is over,” she said. “I guess that's our cue.”

“Yeah – our cue to sneak off to the hotel room. I can't wait to get you out of that dress another minute longer.”

“You've got such a dirty mind.” She laughed as I tickled her neck with my lips. “But that's why I love you.”

She threw herself into my arms as the elevator doors closed behind us.
