“You still a virgin, Broke?” Oh, God! The look on his face! “The fuck? For real, buddy? Holy shit.”

Broke visibly swallows, still standing there speechless.

“Go. Get your ass back into the kitchen and fix me my cappuccino! I won’t fucking say anything, you know that. What the fuck do I care? Well I do, but in a whole different way. And… fuck dude! How the hell did you talk that way when you were testing me? You can talk any pussy out of her panties, so why the fuck haven’t you put your dick inside a cunt yet?”

Whoops, that just sort of slipped out, but what the hell? I mean seriously, a biker with looks like his? Makes no fucking sense. Wait… “You gay?”

Judging by the way his jaw drops, that’s a no. I don’t even know where that thought came from.

“Never mind, into the kitchen with your ass, I need to think about this. And honestly, right now, I have other things to worry about besides getting you laid. Okay?”

Broke stands there for a second or two, then turns slowly on his heel and walks into the kitchen. Yeah, that’s another puzzle I’d like to see complete. For now? I’ve got more important things to worry about. Grabbing my notebook and pen, I hit play.

Two hours later, I’m sure my eyes have taken on the shape of the television. Sure, I watch a lot of documentaries and shit, but this? This is not just watching TV, it’s intense. Not to mention, the level of emotions that are involved. Deeds handled every interview I watched until now. I need to watch two more from before Broken Deeds got on the case, but my mind can’t take it right now.

Looking down on my notepad, there are a few things I scratched down there. I’ve circled
seven
at the left top corner. With
birthday
right beneath it.

The question that bugs me the most is where are they keeping them? It’s weird that the cops didn’t find anything with the search warrant. My mind is running overtime and I need a break. Turning the television off, I walk to Broke who’s writing furiously in a notebook of his own. He looks up at me. “What’s up, Lips?”

I let out an exaggerated yawn. “I’m going to bed. I’m beat. Thanks for the cappuccino. You can fix me those a few times a day. You know that, right? Now that I know you make the most perfect cappuccino I’ve ever tasted, I’m gonna expect that shit.”

He nods. “Anytime sis, anytime. Now go get some sleep.”

Tapping his shoulder as thanks, I walk to the bedroom. I spare a few minutes to take a hot shower and crawl under the covers. I’m out the second my head hits the pillow, but my mind is still dwelling on lost little boys, the number seven, and birthdays.

Chapter 14

I’m late, like seriously late. I can’t believe I overslept. How the hell did that happen? I must have slept like a rock. When I woke, Deeds’ side of the bed was cold, like he hadn’t even slept beside me. I’m glad I checked my phone, instead of lazing in bed. Mila sent me a text last night saying she’d pick me up at ten thirty. That’s twenty minutes from now! After rushing through my shower, I brush the tangles from my wet hair while I walk into the kitchen. Broke is standing there, holding out a perfect steaming cappuccino. Perfect! That’s exactly what I need right now.

“Deeds never made it home last night?”

He shakes his head. “Nah, it’s all fucked up. They found another little boy. Dead. They dropped his body in the same spot where they found that other little kid. Like some kind of statement or some shit.”

Dropping my ass into a kitchen chair, I set my cup on the table as my stomach rebels. That poor little boy. His parents, his family. Oh man, I can’t even begin to imagine. Reaching for my phone, I start to type.

“What are you doing, Lips?”

Without looking at him, I answer. “Skipping Mila’s party. I need to work on this case. Those other little boys need to be found before they…. before…” Tears prick my eyes and I set my phone on the table to cover my face.  I am not handling this well.

A hand rubs up and down my back, Broke squats down next to me.

“Hey, now. We’ve all got that same feeling deep down. It’s all fucked up, but we’re working on it. We’re gonna fucking get them back, you hear? Now listen. You need to spend the day with Mila and her sister, uh, what’s her name?”

Wiping my face, I look at Broke. “I have no clue. Do you?”

He shakes his head. “Nah, never met Mila’s sister. But what I do know is that you need this. Get your head clear. Sometimes that’s just what you need to have a breakthrough. Fuck, that’s the same fucking thing I told my brother on the phone last night. He didn’t listen to me but you sure as fuck will. Goffa will be here in five minutes, so I suggest you drink that cappuccino and get ready.”

I know he’s right and I need to go over things in my head. But you can believe your ass I won’t be sleeping until I have some ideas about how to bring those boys home.

Hearing a knock at the front door, I down the last bit of coffee and grab my purse and jacket. Goffa is holding the door open for me. Walking out, he points to the Jeep parked in front. “Hop in, Lips. Mila asked me to meet them at the diner.”

Grabbing my phone, I shoot a quick text to Blue. Making sure we’re still on and to see if she remembers we’re supposed to meet. With all that tequila she slammed yesterday, it wouldn’t surprise me if she was still sleeping.

When my phone vibrates, I see Blue’s text saying she’s on her way and will be there in fifteen minutes. Perfect! By the time Goffa parks in front of the diner, I see Blue pull in next to us. God, I need to ride a bike again and soon. I sold mine about four months ago. I hated that damn thing. Zack thought I needed a fucking lady bike. Fuck that. Anyway, since I wasn’t riding it that much I thought I’d sell it and buy myself a chopper without Zack knowing. Needless to say I never got around to it. Makes me wonder if Deeds would keep me from buying myself a chopper.

Blue pulls the Jeep door open and with that also pulls me from my thoughts. I mirror the same huge smile she’s wearing. “Did you get it?” I ask her at the same time she holds up a bag. “You rock! You know that, don’t you?”

“You betcha! I picked up some Coco Chanel and this, oh, you gotta see!” Blue reaches into the bag and takes out a little black velvet box. Opening it, she shows me a charm bracelet. There’s only one thing dangling from it. It’s a hawk’s head with one bright blue eye. “I know, I know, it’s the sister right? Not part of the club and all, but come on. It’s pretty, right? It’s the blue that caught my eye. Get it, Blue, eye.” She laughs at her own stupid train of thoughts, making me chuckle.

“Come on, doofus, we’re going inside before you embarrass yourself some more.” Her mouth drops open like she’s shocked I would say such a thing.

Goffa make an irritated sound. “Could you bitches get inside already?”

What the actual hell? I glare to my left. “Shut it Goffa, what’s with the mouth today, huh? Got your panties in a twist or something? Gotta run your mouth? Not cool dude, not cool.”

He actually growls, making Blue and me hurry our asses into the diner.

Mila and her sister are sitting in a booth near the back. One look into their caramel eyes and you can tell they’re sisters, but that’s where the similarities end. Mila’s hair is dark, almost black and pin straight while the sister’s got light chestnut waves float to mid back.  She is delicate with the face of an angel and Mila is sturdy and looks as if she can kick ass at a moment’s notice.

We take a seat across from them while Goffa stretches out in a booth in the other corner. I wonder why he's so far away. Maybe he’s just giving us space, but he’s off somehow. His general vibe and the attitude he had before we walked into the diner… The times I’ve been near Goffa, he’s always paying attention. Right now, his phone is getting all of his attention.

I shift my focus to Mila, I say, “Hey, can you order for me? I need to ask Goffa something. Be right back.” She nods and I walk up to his table.

As I sit down next to him, the fucker actually growls at me. “Dude! What’s with the attitude?”

“None of your business, Lips. Just run along and go back to your girly shit.” He doesn’t even lift his eyes from his phone when he throws the words at me.

Oh, right, that’s not degrading or rude at all. Does he think he can make me listen like the little sheep he thinks I am? “The fuck I will, idiot. Now tell me what the fucking problem is so I can actually get back to my girly shit.”

His eyes leave his phone and find mine. His eyebrow comes up and so does the corner of his mouth. “You’re very annoying. You are aware of this tiny little detail, right?” He grunts when I wave my hand dismissively. “My brother is being released from prison. But the major thing that’s bugging the shit out of me is the fact the fuckers who set him up…. The ones who made fucking sure he went to prison for things he didn’t do? Those fuckers are waiting for him on the outside. I need to go fucking get him, keep him safe.”

Oh, no. That’s fucked up, and why the hell is he still sitting here, I’d go nuts if it was Zack. “Then go get him! Why the fuck are you still here? I mean, Deeds and the boys can handle shit right now, right? Otherwise I can call my brother if you need anything.”

“That’s sweet, Lips. I appreciate it. But I can’t do anything until they release him. That’s the part I don’t know. The when. Might be today or tomorrow, or in three days. But it will be this week. They’re keeping it vague so the fuckers won’t know either.”

Shit, what a fucking mess. No wonder his head is somewhere else. That makes me think. “Are you even on this case? I mean, isn’t it against the law to let family handle cases that they’re connected to?”

A flash of anger darkens his eyes as he keeps them locked with mine. “You didn’t have your little talk with Deeds yet, did you?”

Shaking my head I add. “Nope. Besides, it’s not that important right now. We need to focus on those little boys.”

He nods slightly. “We aren’t fucking cops or something, we’re above that shit. All you need to know is that we’re called Broken Deeds for a reason, sweets. We don’t answer to the fucking law, the law answers to us.” And with that he turns his attention back to his phone.

Jesus, mister creepy guy. “Glad we had that little chat. Let’s not hug, ever.”

He gives a snort. Standing up, I walk back to our table and slide in next to Blue.

Reaching over, I give the birthday girl a handshake. “Hi, I’m Lips.” She gives me a shy smile that immediately reminds me of Broke.

“Nice to meet you. I’m Roan. Oh, and I work here three nights a week so I hope you like the food.” She lets out a light giggle. Fuck! She’s adorable, and she’d be perfect for Broke. Again, I need to shake that thought. I’m not a fucking match maker and this innocent adorable shy girl should stay the fuck away from the rough biker world.

Grabbing the bag with our gifts, I reach over and hand the bag to Roan. “We got you a little something.”

Again with the shy smile and the whisper of her sweet little voice. “Aw, you shouldn’t have. It's certainly sweet of you though. I don’t really have any friends yet since I just moved here. With my new job and all, working here three nights a week, I’ve been so busy. Crap. What I meant to say was that I was happy with just y’alls company.”

When she unwraps the Coco Chanel and opens the bottle to take a whiff, her whole face lights up. “Thank you so much! I love this fragrance! I could never afford it, though. Oh, this is so generous of you two. Thanks so much!”

Okay, now this little woman manages to make me feel all shy and shit. That and she hasn’t even opened the second present yet. When she does, her eye get all big and wide

“Oh, wow! Look Mila, look!” With a huge grin, she holds the bracelet to the light.

Yeah, she needs to stay far, far away from bikerland. I’m gonna have to make sure of that.

After almost two hours of chatting, I realize how much I enjoy their company. Roan can’t take her eyes off her bracelet and keeps touching it. Mila is smiling so big, I just know she’s enjoying this as much as I am.

We’re about to leave when a waitress approaches our table, a brightly-decorated cake in her hands. She looks straight at Roan. “I’m sorry to bother you on your day off, but could you do me a favor and handle the birthday cake at table number five? Please? The mom asked for it when she noticed you sitting here.”

Her gaze darts to the table behind us and she gives the waitress a nod. Standing, she takes the cake from the waitress’ hands and heads over to what must be table five. There’s a mom with four little children. Roan walks over, sets the cake on the table, and starts singing happy birthday. Even Goffa looks up from his phone at the sound of her voice. It’s fucking phenomenal.

When I notice the birthday girl, it hits me and my heart stops. I’ve figured out the connection. She’s wearing a hat with her age written on it. Swallowing hard, I mumble, “Seven.” I need to leave. I grab my bag and slide out of the bench seat. Goffa sees me standing and walks toward me. “I need to leave, now.”

“Sure, I’ll just be a minute. I have to take a piss, stay right here.” He walks off without waiting for my answer, which is stupid.  Like fucking hell I’ll wait for him. I need air, I can’t fucking breathe.

“I need air.” Motioning to Mila and Blue, they both stand and walk with me to the door. Roan joins us since she’s finished her song.

Standing next to the Jeep, my heart is still racing. Fuck, I know I’ve got my connection. I need to make a few calls to make sure and then go check when…

“Look who we have here.”

A chill slithers down my spine at the sound of that voice. It’s him, Kard Lepack, the fucker I… “How’s the fucking shoulder, asshole?” My hand slides down my back. I never carry my gun in my purse anymore. My Luger literally has my back.

The creepy fucker smiles. “How’s the neck, cunt? All healed up so I can start all over again?”

Blue freezes beside me and I hear Mila suck in a breath. Judging by the sound of movement in my periphery, she must have pulled Roan behind her. Of course Blue chooses that moment to unconsciously voice her thoughts. “Did he just call you a cunt?”

I can’t help the loud laughter that bursts from my mouth. I’m fucking nervous as shit and Blue’s not helping one bit. I really can’t help it when I reply to Lepack. “Let's just say for arguments sake that I am a cunt. I do have one, right? But right now? Right now, let’s pretend… again… for arguments sake, I have a cock so you, asshole… you can suck my cock.” In one swift move, I point my gun in his face. Unfortunately, at the same moment, he points his at my heart.

“What the fucking…” Goffa roars behind us.

“Stay where the fuck you are or I’ll shoot Deeds’ ol’lady, right here!” Lepack snarls back at Goffa.

“The fuck you will, get your fucking gun
off
my woman.
Now
!” Deeds’ voice comes from behind the Jeep. Turning my head for a second, I see Zack standing right next to him. They both have guns pointed at Lepack’s head. Lepack glares at both Prez patches and then his eyes come back to me.

“Who do you belong to, you little cunt? Broken Deeds or those other biker boys?”

This fucker makes me
so
fucking mad. And right now it’s not because of being treated this way or this whole fucked up situation but because of what’s he’s done… what he’s still doing to all those little boys..

My voice grows cold when I reply, “I’m Broken Deeds, but if my blood spills, Areion Fury flows out right along with it. Now it’s time for your blood to spill.”

Just as I’m about to pull the trigger, Lepack screams. “Now!”

The sound of a bullet ricocheting right between my feet makes me freeze.

“Nobody fucking move.” Lepack snarls. “I’ve got snipers up ahead that’ll take out a few of you before you get a chance to shoot me. I’m telling you for the last time, Deeds, pull the plug on the case. Fuck off and leave us alone.”

Deeds growls as he takes a few steps forward. “You need to give those boys back and hang yourself before I come to take them and slice your throat.”
