Six months had passed since the incident on the boat, the incident where I discovered who I truly was. The incident that had changed my life forever. I could obviously never tell a soul my secret; the only person that knew was Johnny Maxwell, who unfortunately was due out of prison for good behaviour in the coming weeks. I had learnt to live with the fact that by day I was a successful lawyer, and by night a callous murderer. I had even started keeping a journal of any strange happenings that occurred so I could get some sort of grip on what my body was doing while I slept.

I had managed to get dark Connor (whom I had nicknamed Conrad- a hybrid of Connor and Bad) under control to an extent with sleeping pills. However, his urge to kill was not something that was easily supressed, and every once in a while I would wake up somewhere I had not expected to, unaware of what had occurred the prior evening. He would even leave me angry little notes from time to time, asking me to stop drugging him, but the episodes, to my knowledge, were occurring a little less often.

I have spent many hours searching online, to try and meet other people with a condition as ‘special’ as mine, people who completely lose themselves like I do, but have yet to muster up the courage to contact any of them. With my face being all over the TV I really did not want to confess to someone of my lack of mind control, particularly someone I had just met, but I must admit, sometimes it would be nice to have a friend. I still see Julia from time to time, although things have cooled off a little since Conrad stopped paying her mysterious nocturnal visits. I often wonder if she had any incline of the truth, she often recalls times I would visit her, drenched in blood. How could she not suspect. Perhaps her ignorance was a bliss she chose to keep.

I would very shortly be facing another moral decision, that would test how good a person I actually was. Johnny Maxwell would be released very shortly. As the only person who knew my secret, I would need to act quickly upon his release to ensure he remained as quiet as he has been inside. How do I do that? I sent him down, he will be seeking revenge! I have to decide the best way to deal with this. I could try talking to him, but judging our last visit I don’t think he is the talking type. I could give him a little taste of what would be to come if he spilled with my fists, but that would lead him directly to the police. The only other plan I could think of was that I let little old Conrad out of his cage to seek his revenge…

About the Author

Charles Anikpe was brought up in Rome, Italy by his wonderful Nigerian parents. He is just 18 years old and already a prolific talent, writing while he continues to study and better himself.

His brother Franklin, named so after his father, currently resides in Germany and Charles lives alone with his mother after his father passed away 9 years ago.

As an avid reader, Charles grew up increasingly frustrated with the stories he would read and realized that perhaps he himself was at heart a writer. This was reinforced by the fact that two years ago, he discovered that before his father passed away, he would write books under the alias Barry Ries.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Charles decided to write a book using his dad’s outlining process and inspiration, to create what would become Duplicity.

Charles has created these works in homage to his incredible father and his works, and hopes that someday, he can be as great as he was.
