“I
s it done?” My mother's voice floats out to me the moment I walk through my door. She doesn't even flinch at the sight of my bloody clothes. “Is it done?” she asks again, pushing up from a chair.
Her hands are clamped tight at her sides and her eyes are bloodshot red from hours of crying. “I got one of them—and the names of the others. It's just a matter of time.”
Momma thrusts up her trembling chin and nods at me. “Good.” She doesn't seem to know what to say next. After a long, awkward silence she creeps toward me and the door.
“You're such a good daughter,” she says, throwing her arms around me.
My breath catches and unexpected tears rush my eyes. It is the praise that I'd been waiting for, but didn't know it. Slowly, I lift my arms and wrap them around her thin frame and squeeze.
The connection feels odd, but good at the same time. When we pull away, I'm embarrassed about the tears streaming down my face.
“Maybe you should go and tell your brother tomorrow,” she says.
I'm confused for a moment and then understand that she wants me to visit his grave. “I will.”
She nods and then shuffles out of the house to her place down the street. I watch her go, wondering if we're now going to grow this new bond.
At long last, I close the door and make my way up the stairs. In the bathroom, I strip out of the bloody clothes and shove them into a plastic bag. Once in the shower, I make the water as hot as it can get and accept the pelting punishment.
First Mason. Now Juvon.
It feels as if someone has snatched the ground from up under me and I'm in a constant state of falling. I don't like the feeling. Now, after all I've been through, I don't know that I even want the throne anymore.
I slide my soapy hands over my body, but I keep settling it over my small belly. Pretty soon, I'm not going to be able to hide the truth from the soldiers—then what?
More challenges to the throne?
I suck in a deep breath and am suddenly hit with a wave of pure exhaustion. Tears splash over my lashes, but I feel safe in my tiled chamber to let it out. Thirty minutes later, the water has cooled and my tear ducts are drained.
I shut off the shower, wrap a towel around me, and gather the bag of clothes to take downstairs. There's a metal barrel out in the backyard. I'll toss them in and start a small fire to burn the evidence. I might even grab a beer and just watch the flickering flames while I try to think out my next move.
But halfway down the stairs, a noise catches my ear.
“Hello?”
The staircase is pitch dark and I don't have a weapon on me. I should rush back up and rectify the situation, but I don't. I continue to creep down the stairs at a snail's pace with the hair standing at attention on the back of my neck.
“I know someone is in here,” I say, tryna make out any figure in the semi-darkness. I feel the heavy weight of someone's gaze.
If I make it to the living room, there's a .45 on the table next to the bar. I reach the bottom stair and think I detect someone breathing in the direction of the dining room. I drop my bag and make a mad dash for the table.
When my hand closes on the gun, a voice cracks like a whip out to me. “Willow, wait. It's me.”
I freeze—my heart squeezing out of my chest.
It can't be.
Slowly, I turn back around. This time, I'm able to make out a large, familiar frame as it steps forward into a pool of moonlight.
I jump at the grotesque and hideous sight. After my initial shock, my gaze roams over the ugly black-and-red burns covering a pulpous face. My gut churns, but I'm finally able to lock gazes with the figure's one brown and one milky-white eyes. In the next second, my heart explodes with joy. “Mason.”
