Chapter 14

Attack the evil that is within yourself, rather than attacking the evil that

Is in others

“I think a straggler, we should keep watch, and I’ll go first,” Mathew says, staring out the window.

I give Mathew a kiss on his cheek and go back to where we were sitting down eating. We had brought in a couple blankets from the car, so we can make a bed. If you want to call it that, a hard cement floor hardly calls for a bed.

Kat lies next to me on our bed.

“Good night,” she whispers to me.

“Good night,” I say as I turn over on my side. I’m about to close my eyes when I hear Kat whisper,

“Thank you both for letting me come along. You two are the closest thing I have to a family. I might not have family anymore.”

Before I have a chance to reply, Kat rolls over and faces away from me, ending our conversation.

I finally doze off, just to get waken up by Mathew.

“It’s your turn babe. There are more zombies outside. They just keep walking down the road.”

Getting up and rubbing my eyes, hoping it would help me wake up. I stretch my arms out and try to crack my back. That cement floor sucked, but at least we were safe. I get up and go by the window to keep watch as Mathew lies down on my side of our makeshift bed.

Mathew wasn’t kidding, there seems to be a million zombies following the road. It’s weird that they are all going in the same direction. None of them are making a noise, just slowly dragging their bodies along the road.

Every once in a while I will see one of them trip over a dangling arm or their own leg and fall to the floor, slowly getting back up and keep walking.

I watch the zombies fall all over each other until my shift is over. I walk back to our sleeping area and lean down to wake up Kat. As she gets up and stretch out, I mention

“Just to warn you, there are a dozen zombies outside walking along the main road. Just stay quiet and wake us up at five am,” She nods her head and slowly gets up off the floor.

The night went surprisingly well. The zombies outside didn’t bother us or even wonder over to the gas station. We eat breakfast and start to go throw all of the shelves and extra boxes in the storage room.

We find a handful of canned tuna, a baseball bat behind the counter and a handgun as well. The gun has maybe ten bullets, but it’s worth keeping. Maybe we can find more bullets later on, in our journey.

We pack what we can in shopping bags, which the clerk had behind the counter and put them by the back door. We really don’t have much room in the car, but I’m sure we can make it fit. Once we are done packing everything up of value we decide to get cleaned up in the bath room.  Taking turns, Mathew goes first, and then Kat, I’m last.

Finally, it’s my turn to go wash up; I walk into the bathroom and turn on the hot water. I plug the sink and start to feel it up. Using the traveling body soap I found on a self, I start to clean myself up. The water starts to turn brown as I wash my body up.

I look in the little bathroom mirror and look at my face. My hair is in knots and I have spots of dirt and god knows what else all over me.

I brush the knots out of my hair and brush my teeth. I change into a pair of jeans and a tank top. I instantly feel so much better. I pull my long brown hair into a bun to get it out of my face and hopefully it helps me to stay cooler.

I walk out of the bathroom and see Mathew and Kat at the counter looking at the Map. I walk over to them and give Mathew a peck on his warm lips and playfully slap his butt. He hugs me and slightly pinches my butt in return; even in a zombie apocalypse this man still makes my heart skip a beat.

“I take it these are the roads we will take to California?” I ask looking at the markings they made on the map.

“Yes, it seems to be the best route,” Kat tells me.

“What about getting gas?” Kat asks motioning outside towards the zombie hoard that just keeps coming.

“I will fill up the ten gallon tank; we will have to get more gas later on our way.”

Mathew grabs the ten gallon gas tank and goes outside to the nearest gas pump. It makes me so nervous knowing he’s outside by himself. But he insisted he should go alone, so we don’t make too much noise.

Kat and I grab the groceries bags that we filled up and throw them in the back of the car. Mathew walks back to us and starts to feel the car up with gas.

“Everyone in the car,” Mathew says as he screws on the gas tank. We jump in the car and at the same time close the car doors together. So we don’t make too much noise.

We make a u- turn out of the parking lot and take a side road that runs along the street the zombies are at.

“Can the zombies smell us? I could swear back at the hotel one of them smelt the air and looked at us.”

“I don’t know I thought I saw that too, but these zombies didn’t even look at us. Maybe they are changing.”Mathew says, checking the rear view mirror.

“Well, if they are changing that is not a good thing,” Kat says.

   “Why, not?” I question.

“Because that means we don’t know anything about them anymore. At least before we knew they can hear and smell us,” I answer back.

“Sam is right; this might not be a good thing. We will just be extra careful,” Mathew agrees.

The static on the radio breaks through, and the voice comes through the speakers.

Good morning everyone…. I ‘m seeing less and less zombies outside .I’m not sure why, but I’m not going outside to find out.  I wonder where they’re going. Are they getting hungrier and is looking for food somewhere we don’t know about?

The military is either dead or ran for the hills; I haven’t seen or heard any for two days. My guess is they left us to fend for ourselves. I was able to pick up the military frequency again; they said that the disease has gone from Salt Lake City, Utah and spread to South Dakota Pierre.

In just three days and it has almost gone half way across the country. I’m sorry to say this, but I feel it’s the end of the world. There is no coming back from something like this.  Be careful my fellow survivors and watch your back.

The voice that we have come to know as Steve cuts out, and the station turns back to static. I turn down the station but keep it loud enough so we can hear if he comes back on. “Wow, this disease has spread real far, real fast,” I say amazed and scared.

“Good to know the president is safe in his underground bunker,” Kat says sarcastically.

When something bad happens in the world, the president runs away with his tail between his legs. That seems about right.

We should be able to cross over California’s border by tonight. I haven’t heard from my parents or from Jennifer since yesterday. No text message or missed call or a voice message.

I have not got a signal since yesterday too. I guess I can kiss my phone good bye. No more surfing the internet, facebook or pinterest. No more checking the weather on weather bug, and no more text messages or phone calls.

Chapter 15

Hell is empty and all the

devils are here

-William Shakespeare-

This country depended on technology, without technology, I can only imagine there being more animals like those rapists yesterday. I wonder how my parents are going to keep the boys occupied without television. They must be going insane. Just thinking about it makes me laugh.

“What’s so funny?” Mathew asked me.

“I was just thinking how the boys are probably driving my parent’s nuts without television or a play station keeping them occupied,” Mathew burst out laughing and pats my leg.

“I haven’t thought of that. Your father is probably pulling his hair out because Alexander won’t stop talking to him,” We both laugh for a couple minutes and then the car goes back to being silent.

At this rate hopefully we will be home within twenty four hours. That’s if we don’t run into any more trouble. Keeping my fingers crossed and hope for the best. Up ahead in the middle of the road is an abandoned truck.

“Should we go around it or try to push it out of the way?” Kat ask, sticking her head between the front seats.

   “Around, I’ll just drive slowly.”

Mathew turns the car towards the side of the road and goes slowly around the car. The truck looks like it has been torn apart from the inside out. Every single one of the windows have been broken, glass covers the floor.

The tires are completely flat and there is blood smeared all over the driver’s side of the truck. As we get closer to the front of the vehicle, the driver’s side door is completely dented, a body sits in the driver’s seat.

It looks like at one time it uses to be a man. Half of his face is torn apart; a puddle of blood slowly drips outside of the car door. His arm is sticking outside of the car window; his hand has been chewed on, as if a dog was chewing on a milk bone. The smell of death and zombies feels the air around us. I pull my shirt over my nose and try to breath throw my mouth.

“The poor guy didn’t have a chance.”

“No, he didn’t, the smell is really bad here. Let’s hurry please,” Kat says covering her nose with her shirt.

Mathew pulls his shirt over his nose too and start to drives a little faster around the car. We get back on the road and leave that god awful car behind.

But I can still smell death in the air and that can only mean one thing, there are zombies nearby.

“Is there zombies around here?” I say as I fan my face in front of my nose.

“Maybe….I don’t know …let’s just hurry up. I have a bad feeling about this,” Mathew says.

Mathew’s right; I have a bad feeling about this too. I hope it’s nothing, but I can’t shake the feeling of trouble ahead of us.  As on cue, the voice on the radio comes on.

Hello everyone who’s still listening to me. I just learned something new about our fellow biters. I was in my kitchen upstairs, when I noticed zombies walking down my street in a straight line. This is weird because the end of my street is a cul-da-sack, there’s no where for them to go.

So my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to climb the roof of my house to get a better look. There are more zombies than I can count just standing in the cul-da-sack.

The weird part is they’re still coming. I don’t know where they all came from but now I have a ZOMBIE ARMY standing at the end of my street.

Trust me I will not be leaving my house for any supplies for a very long time. It smells bad here; can you imagine a million zombies in one spot? Yeah, the smell is almost unbearable. I don’t know what they are doing or planning. But I suggest everyone stay indoors and keep your eyes open.

I don’t know how this guy does it, but it seems like every time something weird happens for us his voice pops on the radio and tells us. Is he physic or something? Or these zombies are all changing together.

“Do you think that’s what we saw back at the gas station?” I ask.

“Maybe… do you think that is what we smell right now?” Kat chimes in.

“I don’t know but these zombies are changing and probably getting smarter.”

Mathew pushes down on the gas pedal a little bit more, picking up speed as we drive down the empty street. We still don’t see any sign of zombies but the smell of them is still so strong. I don’t like the way ZOMBIE ARMY sounds. It’s so scary to be around one zombie but to run into a handful of zombies, is bad news.

“I need to use the restroom,” I say nervously.

“Me too,” Kat says, her voice shaking.

Mathew slowly pulls the car over to the side of the road, putting the car in park; he says,
