"Rise and shine," he said.

Hunter wasn't wearing a stitch of clothes. My eyes scanned down, and he was still half hard. I blushed and covered my face again before picking up his underwear and throwing it at him.

"Put something on!" I yelled.

Hunter laughed. "Are you sure? I thought you liked me this way?"

I peeked out from behind the cover and looked at him. His scars and tattoos clung to his muscles like a second skin. They rippled as he moved. Okay, yeah. He wasn't bad to look at.

I felt the space between my legs grow wet. Okay, shit! He was better than, "not bad."

"Just put them on. Okay?" I said.

"All right, all right," he said.

Hunter quickly stepped into his underwear. Then he came next to me on the bed and placed what looked like a breakfast burrito in front of me.

"You're probably starvin'," he said. "And you're lucky that I always carry a decent amount of cash with me. I expected us to be here a couple hours, not the whole day."

My heart leapt into my throat. The whole day?

"
What
?"

"Yeah," Hunter said, "we kept going until you couldn't take anymore. You fell asleep, I went out for some food, and by the time I came back you were raring to go again. It's morning now."

Shit! No wonder my body felt like it had been beaten up.

"Wait," I said, "where's my phone?"

Hunter rummaged around in the pile of clothes until he found it. He handed it to me. I looked at the glowing screen.

26 MISSED CALLS. 10 NEW MESSAGES.

Shit. Shit.
Shit
!

I checked them. Nearly every single one was from my mom or my dad. The last was from Jona.

whr d feck R U girl? I'm guessing you're out, bt U hav som explaining 2 do!!!!

I could only imagine that they were
this
close to sending the whole club out looking for me. Or worse. They already had.

I speed dialed my mom. She picked up before the phone even had time to ring.

"Where are you?" she yelled. I could feel her anger through the phone.

"Hi Mom," I said.

"Don't 'Hi Mom' me! Where have you been! We've been calling you all night!"

"I'm over at Jona's, didn't she tell you?"

There was a pause.

"She said you were, but made up some cock and bull story about you not being able to answer the phone," Mom said.

"Yeah, I was exhausted! My phone was off and I didn't turn it on until now. Sorry for worrying you guys!"

Before she even spoke, I could feel Mom's anger receding.
Thank goodness.

"Well, come home soon!" she said with her last bit of forcefulness.

"I will," I said. "Love you, bye!"

I hung up as quickly as I could. Otherwise she'd just get nosy. Okay. One emergency averted. Now to text Jona.

thx so much 4 covering 4 me. cn U do it jst a ltl whIl longer? You're d best!

I waited. She sent me back a frowny face emoticon.

Fine. bt Dtails l8r.

I let out a sigh.

OK. thx bestie!

As soon as I put down the phone, Hunter held out the plastic burrito container in front of me.

"Eat," he said.

I poked at the artificial concoction gingerly. It was burning hot, and the cheese was gluey, but I was starving. Hunter had his own, and grabbed the steaming burrito in his hand, shoving the tortilla and cheese into his mouth. There was a plastic spoon sticking out of the container. I used that instead.

We sat there, sitting next to each other in silence and just eating. It felt like we were any normal couple on a weekend morning. Maybe we had just slept in late. Hunter served me breakfast in bed. Afterwards we'd cuddle and watch the morning cartoons. That's normal, right?

Sure, I was the daughter of the Midnight Stalkers' president. And he was the Sergeant-at-Arms for a rival motorcycle club. Okay, so he was covered in scars like a veteran of war. But we were
mostly
normal. Weren't we?

I stopped eating.

"This isn't right, is it?" I asked.

Hunter continued to shove food in his mouth. "Why not?"

"Well, we're enemies," I said.

Hunter stopped eating and looked into my eyes.

"Are we?"

I looked at him like he was crazy. Was he joking with me? It was obvious.

"Of course we are! My dad would kill you!"

Hunter looked at me and the intensity in his eyes made me shiver.

"He'd
try
," he said.

He picked up his jeans and wiped his hands on them.

"Look, you're
mine
. That's all there is to say about it."

I hadn't expected it, a shiver went down my spine when he said those words.
"You're mine."
Was I?

"And what if they find out?"

"Who?"

"The Sons of Rebellion, the Midnight Stalkers," I said.

"If they have a problem, " Hunter said, "they can take it up with me."

The tone in his voice made me believe him. Hunter wasn't joking. He was serious. He'd protect me no matter
who
he had to fight.

But what exactly
were
we? What did I mean to him? Heck, what did he mean to
me
?

I felt stupid. We'd only known each other a couple of days, but I knew the answer in my heart.

"You probably think I'm a slut, don't you?" I asked.

"No," Hunter said. "Sluts don't make me work so hard to get in their panties."

He came close and dropped his hands between my legs, rubbing against me.

"No, I mean-"

Hunter pushed me down against the bed. He spread my legs wide and kissed my neck.

"This probably sounds stupid, but-"

He pressed two fingers all the way inside me and thrusted until I gasped. I could barely concentrate on what I wanted to say.

"Look, what I'm trying to tell you is that I lo-"

I wasn't interrupted by Hunter this time. It was the ring of a phone. Not mine. His.

Hunter climbed off of me and found his phone in the mess. He looked at it and his expression darkened. Then he turned to me.

"Gotta go," he said.

Hunter threw on his clothes. Where was he going? What was happening?

"Wait!" I said.

I grabbed his arm, tugging on him. Gently, he pulled away from me.

"Sorry, but I can't stay. It's important," he said.

I could tell there was no arguing with him. He was just that kind of man.

"When can I see you again?" I asked.

Hunter grabbed the doorknob. He looked over his shoulder before he left.

"Tonight."

EIGHTEEN

I DIDN'T WANT TO go, but I had to. My brothers were calling.

Even the elevator was too slow for me. I ran down the stairs, nearly jumping over entire flights.

Like second nature I jumped on my bike, revved her up, and got on the road.

GO TIME.

A text like that was all it took. That meant they found him. And now it was time for me to live up to my nickname.

Nadia called me Hunter. That was the name I was born with.
Hunter
. Hunting for what?

But the name I
chose
? That was
Slayer.
The thing I was born to do.

Her sweet taste was still on my lips. I remembered her look when I left. The sadness.

I wish I could tell her the truth. That I was here to rip her life apart. Person by person. Starting with the first name on my list.
