“I didn’t create these powers, you know, but my best guess is it’s because
we have similar abilities. I can’t read your mind either," I said.

Just then, David walked into the cafeteria.

"I’ve been meaning to ask you something.”

“What might that be?” she asked.

“What
happened between you and David the other night at the restaurant?”

“I guess you already know about that,” she said.

“Yes. I happened to be in the vicinity with a friend – and also most people
know now.”

She scowled.

“Okay. If you must know, we kissed, and he yelled I was hot,” Lisa hesitantly answered.

I smiled thinking it was a compliment, but her tone changed.

“He said I almost burnt his tongue, and how he’d been observing me, and that I

m a freak. Later that night, he called me to say it was over between us.”

Her pupils dilated and tears trickled down her cheeks. It felt like a double
edged sword pierced through my heart. I never knew a girl could affect me
that much. I never felt that way even when the number one woman in my
life cried: my mother.

“Please, don’t cry. It’s his loss. By the way, can you run fast?” I asked, trying my
best to deviate from the subject.

“Yeah, I’m a good athlete,” she said.

“That’s nice, but I wasn’t talking about that. It’s about our ability to
run faster than the speed of sound.”

“Oh really, wow! That’s amazing, but no, I can’t do that. I guess it's another thing you have over me.”

Suddenly, her mood had turned from dolorous to cheerful and resilient. It was amazing how a girl like her could swing moods that fast.

“I don’t think so; I’m a pretty fast learner. Not to worry, I’ll teach you sometime. So, what can you do with the fire you create?”

“As I said the other day, I can create and manipulate fire,” she
said
.

“Yeah, I know. I mean, do you have any tricks? I can make boats,
buildings, flowers and so on with mine.”

By then, I'd emptied the bottles of water into my system, though I felt it wasn’t needed. Even when I couldn’t eat, my love for drinking water
was still strong.

“Impressive, but I don’t think fire can do that. Remember, it’s not a real
state of matter.”

I nodded.

“Yeah, you’re right.”

We chatted for a few more minutes and then left for our individual classes. Before we parted, I asked for her email address. I wasn’t used to
asking for a girl’s phone number because I was afraid she’d
turn down the request. Fortunately, she swiftly wrote it on my right palm.

“Do take care of yourself, and avoid kissing,” I said.

“I’ll try my best," she replied smiling.

It was late when I finished my lectures. I'd given my car keys to Stacey, and told her to go home when she was finished for the day. To me running home was faster than driving the Audi.

Chapter Seven

Impulse

The feeling of being awake became a usual one. I thought I'd be tremendously weak after no food or sleep for three weeks, but instead I was as strong as a horse and, in fact, an icy one.

Time was on a run since it heard I’d gotten my powers. The week I’d had my first official chat with Lisa went by so fast, differentiating the days was a problem. Although I longed for closure with Lisa, the fear of the unknown prevented me from taking a bold step. I planned on using electronic
mails as a medium of communication between Lisa and I, but I hardly
did. On the days we had joint classes, we would sit together at lunch eating
nothing and talking about people’s thoughts. Other days, I sat with
Sharon and watched her as she ate. She often
asked why I wasn’t eating;
I had to lie to her, saying, “I hardly eat outside.”

As for Stacey and I, well, we stopped sitting together at lunch due to the prior fact
I'd found happiness with two gorgeous girls: one I obviously loved and
craved, and the other who was a delightful communicator. However, the relationship
between Stacey and I was still strong.

Meanwhile, Julie’s envy grew stronger by the day. I tried often to
say hello to her but I guess that wasn’t enough. She kissed her teeth every time she saw me with Lisa or Sharon, but I completely ignored it.

I was so conscious about my
relationship with Lisa; I took things really slow. I wanted to be sure that I
was the right guy for her even though I knew she was the right girl for
me. We talked on various topics; our hobbies, our abilities, but these were all done in school. We hadn’t taken our relationship
outside the school walls.

***

I lay down on the softest pad one could possibly have, but I couldn’t
sleep – I wasn’t trying to. Usually, I would lie down, close my eyes and just
think of Lisa, hoping I would be able to connect with her telepathically

but I couldn’t. Images of Sharon’s smile or Stacey
laughing at my jokes always distracted me. So now, I lay down concentrating
on chatting with Lisa in the aforementioned manner, and finally I got
through. She was singing in her head a song I recognized to be
Wish
You

Here,
by
Kate
Voegele
.

I had to interrupt.

You have an amazing voice.

Thanks, so you can hear me? But I'm only humming,
” she asked.

Yes, I can hear you. We can connect telepathically,
which means
…”

I know what it means. T
hat’s awesome. Is it only with
you though? Can I telepathically talk with others?

Her question was an excellent one. I'd never thought of it before. The
excitement of talking to her didn’t let me.

I’m not so sure, but for now only me. You know, it’s really difficult to connect
with you. I have been trying all week. I guess I had to get you at the right
time.

I see,
” she said.

I laughed at her unintentional metaphoric statement even though
it still meant
I
understand
. As long as it came out from her mouth, I perceived it to be funny. Talking with her was so much fun; she would
always twist her words to hide their true meaning.

So, how have you been?
” I asked

I’m fine. I guess,
” she said.

You guess? Tell me, what’s wrong? Does it have to do with your
powers?
” I asked.

Yes, it does. I haven’t told my parents about it, and my younger brother
is beginning to suspect.
” She sounded worried.

I haven’t told mine either, though I told my cousin.

She refused to linger on the fact that I hadn’t told my parents and moved
to the later part of my reply.

Did you tell Stacey about me?

Yes, I did.
” But before she could speak – telepathically, that is – I
continued, “
She swore to keep it a secret.

I hope she can, because if everyone finds out about my abilities, I'll ether be jailed or killed – or worse: experimented on.

I'll never let that happen to you as long as I breathe,
” I replied exuding confidence.

Aw, thanks. That’s so sweet. But make
sure
she keeps it a secret,
” she
said, with two different tones before and after the conjunction.

I will,”
I replied. “
Will you be in class tomorrow?

Yeah,
” she answered. “
Remember the girl who still thinks you like her
?

I laughed aloud. “
Hmm … who's that?
” I said.

Don't try to deny it. We both read her mind the other day
.”

Oh, is it Mimi?
” I asked

Yeah, she told me she has a crush on you. And also there's Julie. Hmm, you have many admirers.

I try not to think of myself as one who does. You, though, are blazing hot. I mean, anytime we are at the cafe all the guys stop and stare. Remember the other day
when that dude tripped and fell just because he was staring at you.

Okay, I give up. Anyways, got to go. Take care, Stephen.”

You too,
” I replied.

It was the very first time she’d pronounced my
name in full; I was mostly referred as
you
. I liked the way she pronounced my name; however, hearing Julie pronounce my name drove hot coals down my back. Maybe
that was the reason I didn’t want to get close to her; even as a friend, Julie
was very alluring.

Stacey was in bed when I came knocking on her door the next
morning. She had informed me she'd sleep late the night before and that I
had to wake her up, ignoring anything she'd say.

“Knock, knock. Wake up, Stacey,” I bellowed.

“Go away,” a soft voice said.

“Honey, it’s time to wake up and get ready for school.”

She repeated, “Go away.”

I lost my patience and opened the door. There
she was, lying down on her gigantic bed wrapped in a pink colored duvet.
It was obvious why she didn’t want to wake up; her bed looked so comfortable, but
unfortunately, she had a lecture early that morning. I walked up
to her bed and sat beside her.
