“Alexis! You are too much!” I shook my head. “The only bad part is, I wish the others were here,” I said.

She knew who I meant. Katie and Mia from our Cupcake Club were doing different things than
us this month. Alexis frowned thoughtfully. “Yeah. But we'll see them plenty. And maybe it's good for us to branch out a little. It will generate some new business strategies and connections!”

I swatted her. “Is that all you think about?”

She pushed open the door to the locker room and grinned. “Pretty much!”

“I just hope they don't replace us with new friends.”

Alexis shrugged. “Maybe they're thinking the same thing.”

I thought back to last fall, when Katie had been dumped by Callie, her old best friend, so that Callie could hang out with Sydney Whitman and the Popular Girls Club. New friends and old: a tough thing to balance. I sighed just thinking about it.

One of the things I liked about this camp (that I noticed when I came to the open house they had in March) was that they have private changing rooms in the locker room, so you don't have to strip naked in front of strangers. I could never change in front of other people. Forget about naked into a bathing suit, I can't even change into pj's at a slumber party or try on clothes at the mall if someone else is in the room. It's just a personal thing. Except for Mom. I am very private about my body. Maybe it comes
from being the only girl in a family of boys, and from having my own room, but I just like privacy.

Alexis and I got dressed in changing rooms next to each other and were chatting through the openings at the top of the dividers.

“Wait till you see my new suit!” she said. “It's so cute!”

“Me too! My mom brought it home as a surprise!”

We came out and took one look at each other and started laughing our heads off. We had on the exact same bathing suit! They were tankinis, navy blue with white piping and a cool yellow lightning bolt down either side. Alexis is kind of muscular from soccer, and I'm kind of thin (I play the flute, and that doesn't exactly build muscles!) so the suit fit us way differently. We couldn't stop giggling though. We looked like total dork twins! I knew right then this summer was going to be silly, superfun, and totally awesome.

Coco Simon
always dreamed of opening a cupcake bakery but was afraid she would eat all of the profits. When she's not daydreaming about cupcakes, Coco edits children's books and has written close to one hundred books for children, tweens, and young adults, which is a lot less than the number of cupcakes she's eaten. Cupcake Diaries is the first time Coco has mixed her love of cupcakes with writing.
