Hunter
: What is she doing back?
Writer
: I don't know. Crazy Girl said she came back for me.
Hunter
: That's good, right? Now you can have your girl back.
Writer
: No brother, it's not good! Did you not see what happened back there?
Hunter
: Yeah, I saw.
Writer
: Come on, let's get this done.

As soon as we walk into Runaway Tattoo, I see Audrey at the front desk. Just like always, when she sees Hunter, her face lights up and she gives us a wave. I have become good friends with Daphne and Audrey since I started coming here but neither of them are the fuck 'em and leave 'em type of girls and I'm nowhere available for more than that.

They’re more like Ever is, they need guys to love them like I love her. I can't be the one to do that, so I’ve always kept them strictly in the friend zone. I don't really know too much about them though, they know more about me than anything. I think Hunter may have a thing for Audrey anyway, so I may need to help my brother out on this one.

I’ve been coming here for the last year, for the pain of the tattoo to forget about Ever, even just for a few hours. Hunter has come with me every single time so he’s almost as tattooed as me now, but he really comes to see the pretty girl behind the desk with her colored hair, piercings, and tattoos.

I walk up to her desk and write on my paper, asking if Daphne is in. She gives me a nod and walks into the back. I look over to Hunter, who has his eyes glued to the girl, so I hit him on the back and he jumps a little from the surprise of it. My shoulders shake with my silent laughter as I grab my pen and paper.

Writer
: Why don't you just ask her on a date?
Hunter
: I don't date. Besides, she doesn't want me.
Writer
: Are you fucking kidding? Her face lights up when she sees you. I'm sure Hanger and Bear were saying the same.
Hunter
: Take your own advice.
Writer
: I did try with Ever. Has everyone forgot she left me?
Hunter
: Not talking about the past. Your girl is back brother, don't waste it.

Daphne and Audrey walk back into the front as Daphne jerks her head for us to follow her. I’ll deal with the situation with those two later. I shut her office door behind us and when I turn back around, taking my seat, she already has her paper, writing on it.

Daphne
: What can I do for you guys? I figure this isn't the normal I-want-a-tattoo meeting because I didn't get a text.
Writer
: Hunter can fill you in. I’m going to the bathroom.

I lock the bathroom door behind me before pulling out my baggie of pills. I sit eight hydros down on the counter, bringing my gaze to the mirror in front of me. Looking at myself, I can see the dark circles surrounding my eyes. My cheeks may be a little sunk in but nothing drastic, other than that, I think I look fine.

Over the last year, too many people have said shit to me about having a drug problem. As long as it isn't destroying my life, I don't see a problem with what I choose to do. I look down at the pills as I start to go back in time to being twelve years old and the start of me going deaf. I shake it off before I am too far gone in the memory.

I pick up all the pills, popping them in my mouth, and swallow them down with some water out of the faucet. I walk back into the office, sitting down, letting the pills take effect. My anxiety disappears, a calming feeling replaces it, and I just feel relaxed. I keep my head down because I know that both Hunter and Daphne are both watching me. I could give a fuck about them right now. She slides the paper in front of me, so I lift my eyes enough to read it.

Daphne
: Hunter informed me of what's going on, but I'm gonna meet with your president. What is going on with you, Writer? I'm worried about you!
Writer
: Nothing.
Daphne
: Don't bullshit me. We all know you got a goddamn problem. I wouldn't think you would miss out on a meeting to get high though.
Writer
: Fine! She’s back and I'm not dealing with it very well.
Daphne
: Who's back? Ever?
Writer
: Yes, Ever!
Daphne
: Isn't that a good thing?
Writer
: I don't know.
Daphne
: Don't mask your feelings with drugs. It won't end well.

I get up out of my seat and head outside. I don't wanna hear anymore she has to say. She doesn't know me. Hunter comes outside not too long after and we head back to the clubhouse.

When we walk in the door of the clubhouse, we go find Hanger and I sign to him.
Daphne knows what we want, but she needs to meet with you first.

Okay, set it up.

I nod, letting him know it’ll be taken care of, then I walk away. I'm too fucked up to go on the roof, so I go to my room. I lay on my bed, thinking about the long, blonde haired beauty with the sky blue eyes that holds every piece of me in her hands. My eyes grow heavy and when I can't stay awake any longer, I fall asleep. Sleep doesn't let up on the past though, it always comes back to haunt you.

WRITER

PAST

★★★

I have one of my ear infections again, but this time it’s really bad. It's in both my ears. They keep draining glue-like fluids, along with blood, and it hurts so bad I'm crying. I walk from our bathroom out into the living room of our shack. Both of my parents are passed out on our ratty old couch from the drugs they’ve done.

I scream, “Mom, help me please! My ears they hurt so bad! I need a doctor!” My ears pulse from the pain of yelling and I have to cover them with my hands to try and relieve some of the pounding. She doesn't even move a muscle as the pain radiates into my head from screaming. Tears fall freely down my face from the aching and the fact I have parents that don't care enough about me to take me to the doctor.

Since screaming at her did nothing, I decide to grab her frail shoulder, shaking with everything I have. In my weakened state, there isn’t much that happens, she just falls over onto my dad's lap. As a last resort, I try him next, knowing it won't be good for me if I do wake him. “Dad!” I shout loudly as I hit him on his shoulder. I grip his arm, shaking it wildly, and finally he starts to stir while I keep yelling for him to wake up. “Dad, Dad please! I need to go to the doctor! My ears, they hurt so badly! Help me, please!”

“Go in your fucking room, Jaxon. Suck that shit up, boy! Be a fucking man! It don't hurt that goddamn bad. All you are is a little fucking cry baby.” He uses his baritone voice, showing his authority. He leans up, slapping his hands against both my ears. They throb in pain as I scream out once again in agony, and all the while, he can only yell, “Go now! Leave us be!”

I run back into the bathroom, feeling the liquid seeping out of my ears. I look into the mirror at my swollen face and deep red ears. Placing some toilet paper gently against them, I pull it away and there is thick, milky fluid, along with blood, covering parts of the tissue. My infections have never been this bad before, and all the medicine I had left was used for the last one.

After that day, my hearing started decreasing at a rapid pace. I acted normal in school until they just thought I was rebelling and not wanting to participate. I stuck to myself and the teachers left me alone. When, really, if I would’ve said anything, I would have gotten a beat down at home. By the time my mom sobered up enough to see something was really wrong, it was too late and my hearing was gone.

EVER

Break Even by The Script

I’ve never seen anything so perfect.

I laugh-What are you talking about Writer?

Look at your untouched skin next to my tattooed arm.

It is pretty perfect, isn’t it?

I wake and stare up at the ceiling, remembering the day that my dream took place. We were making love for the first time in his room at the clubhouse. Once we were both spent and sated, we laid there naked, wrapped up in one another when he signed about how perfect we looked. I remember feeling euphoric, like I was on top of the world and nothing could bring me down. I remember feeling like that was the only place I wanted to be and nothing would ever change that. Little did I know, everything would change and I’d lose him just a few short years later.

It’s time for me to get up and put the awful plan in motion, so I start my day with showering, having breakfast, and sending a text to my friend Robert. We met in fashion school and became fast friends because he has a family member that is also hearing impaired, causing him to already know sign language. It was nice having someone there that I could communicate with besides Jackie. Even though we never hung out after class, I still considered him a good friend, which I never had many of.

Me:
How busy are you?
Robert:
Hey stranger! Not very, why?
Me:
Can you help me with my sister's wedding dress?
Robert:
Are you back? I thought you were in New York.
Me:
Yes, I'm back. Long story about New York. So can you help me?
Robert:
Sure I'll help! Where do you wanna meet?
Me:
We can meet at my parents then we’ll head over to the clubhouse.
Robert:
Am I finally going to meet the infamous Writer?
Me:
Lol maybe.
Robert:
Why are we going to the clubhouse instead of her being there?
Me:
She wants us to come there.
Robert:
This isn't making sense to me. What's really going on?
Me:
Ugh!! We gotta go there so Writer can see you with me to make him jealous.
Robert:
You know I'm up for seeing a bunch of yummy bikers, but I don't want my pretty face getting messed up. I'm not sure about this.
Me:
It won't, I promise. I went there yesterday and he was with another girl.
Robert:
Ouch! Okay, so what do you want me to do?
Me:
You just have to walk in with me, maybe put your arm around me.
Robert:
Okay I'll do it. But if any of them sexy bikers come after me, I'm running.
