She didn’t dash through her quarters searching for him or call out to him. He’d taken what he wanted from her and departed. She wasn’t sure why that hurt or why something in her screamed that she should chase him, but it did.

Rebecca went through the rest of her morning preparations: making the bed, downing one of her reprations, and straightening the living room. She left the chair beside her bed, her soul telling her to leave it as it was. It screamed something else, it commanded she curl against the soft surface and bury her nose in the cushions. She breathed deeply and drew the musky scent into her lungs, and it soothed some of the panic attacking her.

Then it was her comm’s turn to beep, but the caller didn’t wait to be answered and Poxu’s grating voice filled the air. “Intake Officer Varda report to my office immediately.”

The clock showed she still had a quarter of a zentic before her shift started, but Poxu obviously didn’t care about schedules.

Rebecca was quick to stuff the repration in her mouth and hotfooted it toward the stationmaster’s office. With each step, her unease grew and fear slowly blossomed inside her. Someone had seen them enter or seen him leave or knew…

She burst into the stationmaster’s reception area and the timid Bushrak waved her through with a rapid twitch of her whiskers. Without a word, Rebecca headed straight for the open office door. She stepped through the doorway and paused, coming to attention and waiting to be noticed by the powerful male. Powerful in position, but not in physical reality. That didn’t mean he didn’t try to throw his authority around.

She just hoped he wasn’t throwing it at her this wentic.

Poxu raised his gaze from the desk and focused on her. His eyes took on a familiar light, the glow flaring as he traced her body with his vision. Karru had done that to her and it stoked the fires of her need. Poxu… disgusted her. She felt unclean when he gazed at her in such a way.

“Intake Officer Rebecca Varda,” he purred. “Come forward. I was informed of your actions regarding the Knara. I wish to praise you for your dedication and strict adherence to federation code. Through your actions, Rilli remains in compliance.”

Rebecca swallowed hard, knowing the smile he sported was fake and merely a thin veneer covering his true purpose. “Thank you, Stationmaster Poxu.”

Movement to the left drew her attention, and she watched as a ship retreated from one of the station berths, making its slow retreat.

“That is the Knara vessel. The Secavi. They were granted permission to remain overnight but were denied movement through the station. Their guest roster included an unsanctioned species.”

So that’s why Karru left…

Poxu drew her attention back to him and she noted him twirling a data pad in his hands. It flipped end over end, spinning in his fingers, and a true sense of fear settled in her bones. “It is good we have officers like you on duty. Just think what could have happened…”

She didn’t think any response was necessary, so she remained silent as she waited for what else he had to say. Something that
had
to do with the device he now held. He didn’t keep her in suspense very long.

“Come, Officer Varda. Come forward.” She couldn’t deny him and did as asked. She moved forward until she stood two feet from the edge of his desk. He continued to flip the data pad and the tics slipped past until she thought she’d scream with the waiting. Finally-
finally
-he laid the device flat on his desk and carefully slid it toward her.

Rebecca’s heart stopped and her mouth went dry as she stared at the image revealed to her. The stairs… The walls… The dim lights… The male…

“Explain.”
