Enraged, I sat up and brushed back the hair hanging in my face. “Technically, yes.”

“What does that mean?” He asked, exasperated.

“You only get one question. You know the rules.”

“Technically, is not a full answer. Technically can mean many things.”

“God, Ethan, what do you want to know for?” And why we’re at it, what could you possibly see in her?”

“Technically, I’m going to let that question be answered even though it’s number three for today,” he said, as he moved onto the pull out couch with me. “Okay, here it goes.” He exhaled. “I don’t see anything in her. She’s just a friend. Well, probably not anymore, but I don’t like her, Sophie.”

“Is she a friend with benefits?  And, why do you think she wouldn’t be your friend anymore?”

“Look who’s breaking all the rules.” Ethan sucked in a quick breath then blew it out. “Your turn. What does technically mean?

I patted the pillow next to me. I wanted him near me. I wanted to know what he meant. “Come closer.”

I rolled onto my side and he did the same. Our noses mere inches away from one another. I felt myself suck in my own breath while I studied his lips and then his eyes. “Technically we are together, but I don’t want to be anymore.”

He mouth curved up into a wide grin. “Well, technically, I’m really happy to hear that.”

I started feeling confident right then as his eyes stared into mine. “Your turn. What happened?” I asked, desperate to know the answer.

“We were friends with minimal benefits, but not anymore. She wouldn’t leave me alone. What is it with American girls? She was relentless. I told her tonight that I wasn’t interested anymore. It’s over.” The only problem with his statement is that I didn’t know what minimal meant in his book. Which led me to start thinking again.

“I’m American.”

“No. You’re British, but live in America.”

I felt hope for the first time. “So, you really ended it?”

He nodded and smiled.

“I have another question.”

“You’re pushing your luck, Gerrard. Shoot.” I couldn’t see his face, since he’d been on his back, but I thought I heard something in his voice.

I sat up and looked down at him. “Have you ever had sex with anyone?”

His smile that I’d been sure was there had disappeared. His face looked surprised.  He turned onto his back and looked over his shoulder and straight into my eyes. His mouth hung open and then he said, “Once, but I regret it.”

I snorted. “Guys don’t regret having sex.”

He shifted his body and pushed himself up. “It’s not that I regretted having sex it’s just...”

“Who is why you regretted it?” I asked, nervously.

His face looked pained for a second, but he managed to smile halfheartedly. “No, more like a why. She was a good friend of mine back home. I was so lonely and upset when my Dad passed. She was there. She was a warm body. Someone to make me stop feeling pain for a few minutes. I took advantage of her,” he said, before he turned away and then added, “That’s why I regret it.”

I blinked away a tear that was about to escape.“I’m sorry for asking. I didn’t mean to get you upset.”

“Rubbish. You’ve never upset me. Besides.” His hand brushed up against my cheek. “I’m done pretending,” he said, as he smiled. His fingers glided slowly down my arm. The only thing I could do was continue to stare into his eyes. I don’t think I’d ever forget that moment. “I might kiss you right now, Sophie.”  His hands moved up to my face. He’d been so close that I could feel his warm breath on my mouth. Looking into his green eyes my heart hammered in my chest. I swallowed hard, realizing that this was it. It was finally going to happen. We were really going to kiss.

I’d let out nervous laughter. “That was my next question.”

Ethan pulled back and he raised his eyebrows. “What was your question going to be?”

I paused for a brief moment. “What have you been waiting f...?”

Before I could finish it had happened. His fingers lifted my chin and his lips instantly met mine. And, oh God they were amazing lips. First it was fast and furious like we couldn’t get enough of each other. The next soft, tender, slow and perfect. My entire body started to tell me that this was right. He was right. His arms had gone around me, the scruff on his chin rubbed against mine. And, I didn’t care that it sort of hurt. I wanted this and I let go of any inhibitions and started to lose myself in his kiss.

When I stopped, I continued to look into his eyes and asked, “Hey, are we really gonna do this?”

“Do what?” Ethan asked, with hesitation in his voice.

“Get all blissed out when you’re leaving in a few months.”

“You don’t want to?”

“No...yes. I mean I just know,” I said, as I drew my knees up to my chest. “I’ll probably be the one left with the broken heart.”

His face had concern written all over it, but his eyes were gentle.“Don’t be so sure about that. I’m the one that came after you. My heart has been broken for a long time, Sophie. I don’t intend to let it happen again,” he said. As he shifted closer, he grabbed my legs and tugged them down. “Ever.” Then he sealed his promise with another kiss.

As the kiss continued, I couldn’t help but think of my check list and it all  had been there: heart raced, clammy hands, knees shook, the earth felt like it was indeed shattering. This was it. I pulled him closer to me and tugged at his sweater until he was lying on top of me. I pushed my braced leg out to the side and grabbed a hold of his shoulders and kissed him harder and deeper. My tongue met his as he moaned loudly.

Lying beside him in the dark, his heart beat against mine when he whispered softly, “We drifted apart for a long time, Sophie, but now that we’re here together, I’m hoping you see what you mean to me.” He held me in his arms and I didn’t want to let go of him. Was it possible to feel this way for people our age? This urgency we both felt? How could I have been so blind?  I didn’t even care anymore. I just knew I wanted Ethan forever.

                      ***

The next morning at the breakfast table we couldn’t help but grin at each other as my mother passed the toast. We sat across from one other so we didn’t give anything away. Our eyes met over the jelly, the pancakes, or the juice before we headed off to our first day back to school after winter break.

Once inside the car we hardly could make it down the block.

“Should I pull over?” he asked.

“We’re gonna be late.”

He shrugged. “So what?”

“You’re not even supposed to be driving.”

He pointed to my leg that was stretched out and wrapped in a brace. “Did you have a better idea?”

He looked into the rear view mirror before he pulled over onto an empty street. He barely had the car in park before he twisted my way.  His hands reached up as he tried to shift his body closer to mine, then his mouth lingered softly touching mine. “Let’s ditch,” he murmured.

I laughed. “No can do.”

He exhaled. “I honestly don’t think I’ll make it all day.”

I quickly pecked him on the lips. “I think you’ll live. Besides, I have an exam and I need to talk to Jason today. Or did you forget?”

He leaned back into his seat and pulled the lever down into drive. “Right, Jason. I would be more than happy to take care of that one for you. I’ve been dying to do something....anything to piss him off.”

I shook my head. “No. I’ll take care of Jason.”

We were late. I knew we would be even though we only stopped for a few brief minutes. As we got out of the car the final bell filtered into the parking lot.  He handed me the crutches from the back seat and stuffed my car keys into my bag as we made our way into the school together.

The halls were empty as he walked me to my first period class. “I’m fine. Go to class,” I said with a smile. I had a feeling I would be doing a great deal of that from now on.

His fingers ran down the side of my jaw. “You sure?” He asked, as we stood there and lingered in the doorway of my class. He bent over and placed his mouth on mine for a brief, but wonderful kiss. “You are going to sit with me at lunch today, right?”

“How about you sit with me and my friends. I don’t want to just ditch them.”

He gently pushed back my hair, and tucked a loose strand behind my ear. “See you in a few,” he whispered. I propped myself up against the wall and watched as he strode down the hallway until I he turned a corner and I lost sight of him. He had this cute little walk that I swore I’d be able to pick out even if he were ahead of me by forty feet and surrounded by fifty guys.

Once in the cafeteria we’d all sat like usual, although Ethan had now joined us and had sat down next to me. His hands were under the table, one resting on my good thigh. My bad leg was hung over the side of the bench. I still hadn’t dumped Jason and I knew that I had to get it over with today, so I pushed Ethan’s hand aside. He gave me a quick look that said, ‘seriously?’

I saw Jason come in and look toward my table. He gave a nod and I forced a smile back and that was it. So, when he started to approach the table, I quickly turned my body to face his. I wasn’t sure if anyone noticed Ethan’s hand through the first few minutes of lunch and it made me really nervous.

“Hey,” I said, trying my hardest to sound nonchalant.

He leaned down and pecked me on the cheek and glared at Ethan. “Sorry, I haven’t come over or called. I’ve just been really busy. How about it? You and me after school...my house. My folks are gone until seven. We’d be all alone.”

“Umm, I don’t think I can. I kind of need to talk to you. Can we talk later at my house?” I didn’t have the heart to dump him right here in front of everyone and I thought later might be easier.

He looked back at Ethan. “Is he gonna be there?” He asked, loud enough for the whole table to hear.

I didn’t have to turn around to feel Ethan getting up. “Do you have a problem with that mate?”

They stood toe to toe. “One, stop calling me your mate...I’m not. Two, yeah I do have a problem with that. Don’t think I don’t know what you’re up to man.”

He grinned. “Well, I’m afraid it’s about to get worse before it gets better.”

I quickly scanned the cafeteria. All eyes within a twenty foot radius had now been focused on them. This could not be good.

“Do something,” Val said, as she poked my hand.

I grabbed a hold of my crutches and braced my leg down into a standing position. “Ethan, stop.”

Jason shoved Ethan, but Ethan barely moved an inch. He just held his ground.

“C’mon, pussy do something.” Jason yelled out.

Ethan grinned. “Don’t need to. I already did something. I got Sophie.”

Oh, shit. I couldn’t believe the words came out of his mouth. I wanted to tell Jason. That was not the way I ever imagined breaking up with a guy. Just as it looked like Jason was getting ready to take a swing, Mr. Powell pulled them away from one another. “What seems to be the problem, boys?” He asked, grabbing Jason by his collar.

Thank God! I was almost positive Ethan would have no problem taking on Jason, but I didn’t want to find out.
