“Is terrible what I must tell,” she said softly.
“Molly's already told us some,” said Wes. “Sit down and tell us as much as you can.”
Granny eased herself down in a rocking chair and began to talk.
“Just me,” Granny said. “Molly not here. Four men come with guns. They take Renita and Tamara away.”

Mejicano?
” Wes asked.

Americano
,” said Granny. “Week ago they come. They leave this.”
From the pocket of her apron she produced a gold coin. On one side was the image of a dragon.
“Damn it,” Wes said, gritting his teeth.
“Let me see that coin,” said Silver.
Wordlessly, Wes handed it to him, and Silver turned it over. On the back was the numeral one.
“Numero uno
,” El Lobo said. “No more dos.”
“No,” said Silver. “They're telling us something. They've taken Renita and Tamara, and they expect to be followed. That's why they left the coin. The number one tells me they're daring us to come after them. They're using the girls to bait a trap.”
“That means they're still alive,” Wes said, “and I aim to walk into their trap, a Colt in each hand.”
“Sí
,” said El Lobo grimly. “We kill.”
“I got the two of you into this,” Silver said, “and it's only fair that I see you through it. We'll load up on supplies and ammunition, and take their trail, wherever it leads.”
“Is late in day,” said Granny. “Rest tonight, go tomorrow.”
“Go now,” El Lobo said angrily.
“No,” said Wes. “We've just ridden near a thousand miles. Another few hours won't change anything. We'll replenish our supplies and ammunition and ride out at dawn. I aim to finish these dragon-faced bastards if I have to set afire every thicket and level every building from the Mississippi to the Pacific.”

Bueno,
” El Lobo agreed.
“Then we'll ride at dawn,” said Silver.
“A writer in the tradition of Louis L‘Amour and Zane Grey!”
