Nathan’s hand slid down between my legs. He played with my clit, rubbing it small circles. My hips started to sway as if I was possessed. Then I felt his middle and index fingers slide inside me. I was so wet he had no trouble entering me.

His cock was thicker, but I felt strangely comforted. I was so wet that I was sure I could handle his cock.

Nathan slid his fingers out of me.

A spasm of pleasure rocked my body. He pulled at my underwear and positioned me against the wall. I felt the tip of his cock brush my pussy. Just as he was about to penetrate me, he groaned: “Fuck…”

He carried me to the opposite side of the grotto. There was a small flat surface that served as a bar. It was just enough space to lie down. Nathan lifted me onto the edge then climbed on top of me. I laid down before him, topless. My underwear still clung to my body wetly.

Nathan kissed the insides of my thighs then hooked my underwear around his fingers. His eyes never left mine as he slid them free from my body.

He moved over me. Water dripped from his chest and long hair onto my body.

I spread my legs. Nathan grabbed my hips and positioned me beneath him. Then he was inside me. His cock pierced me slowly. I tensed, inhaling sharply as my pussy stretched to accommodate him.

At first there was pressure and a hint of pain, but beneath it a roaring current of pleasure flowed. As the pain receded animalistic desire took over. My skin felt alive as if energy radiated through every cell of my body.

Nathan groaned with deep satisfaction. I could see how much control it took for him to be gentle with me. He looked almost pained with hunger, but he stayed in control. He moved slowly in and out of me. My pussy pulsed around the length of his shaft. I arched my back and dug my nails into his shoulders.

His cock throbbed as he drove into me. He started to move faster. His thrusts came in quick, rhythmic pulses.

A dirty thought crossed my mind: What if Mia walked in on us right now? What if my mother and stepfather caught us?

The idea of being caught made me cry out. I lifted my legs so Nathan could fuck me easier. He pounded against my g-spot. A surge of raw energy raced up and down my spine as an orgasm took control over me.

Nathan’s back went straight. He drove his cock deep.

The orgasm racing up and down my spine crashed. I was too distracted by the liquid heat inside me to realize I’d just cum for the first time in my life.

Nathan collapsed. His heavy body rested on top of mine. I could feel his heart pound quickly, then slow. He slid his cock out of me, sending a fresh wave of tremors through my body.

Nathan dropped down into the water, pulling me with him. He gathered me up in his arms and kissed me. We moved through the water as if floating on air. Before I knew it, we were out of the pool.

Nathan helped me dress. My legs weren’t steady. I almost fell over twice. Nathan smiled mischievously at my clumsy state. I felt drunk. My body hummed with the memory of his touch.

Nathan shook his hair like a wet dog before putting on his shirt. After he’d dressed, he helped me back into the house.

“I should get you to bed,” he said.

With a final kiss, he deposited me in my bed and pulled the covers up around my shoulders.

“Goodnight,” he said.

“I love you,” I blurted out without thinking.

Nathan hesitated. “I love you too,” he responded uncertainly.

I watched him leave the room. He seemed to linger as if something was holding him to the spot. Finally, he closed the door. I fell fast asleep.

In the morning, I woke feeling high. Heat radiated between my legs, pulsing pleasantly. I stretched and rose. I felt different. I always thought the notion of losing your virginity changing you into a different person was cliché, but I truly felt changed.

I moved easier, more confidently. I took my time getting ready that morning. I was more than a little nervous about being in the same room with my mother, stepfather, and stepbrother. Would they be able to tell we’d had sex? I wasn’t sure I could hide my attraction to Nathan. This had disaster written all over it.

I walked into the kitchen slowly. I peeked in first. Nathan was nowhere in sight. My mother was at the sink, scrubbing the dishes furiously.

“Hi, mom,” I said as I entered.

She turned on me with an angry glare. My stomach flipped. I felt nauseous. She knew. I could see it on her face. I sank down into a chair.

“Gone! Can you believe it?” she said.

“I… what?”

“Nate’s left us again. He barely even said goodbye.”

I breathed a sigh of relief. She didn’t know. She was upset about Nathan leaving.

“He’s gone?” I asked sadly.

“He left early this morning. Some man in a uniform picked him up and they drove off. Can you believe it? I thought he was done with the Marines.”

“Did he say where he was going?”

“No. Just that he’d be in touch ‘eventually.’ What does that even mean, ‘eventually?’ Your stepfather is beside himself with worry.”

I nodded along as she continued to rant, but I wasn’t listening. Gone. I may never see my stepbrother again. He hadn’t even bothered to say goodbye before leaving. Was last night meant to be a final goodbye? It was too depressing to think about.

“Excuse me,” I said and left the table.

The surge of confidence I felt in the wake of sex with Nathan receded into a deep depression. How could he just leave me?

I spent weeks in my bedroom. I’d drift between the kitchen and living room in a trance. Occasionally, I was hit with a surge of nausea and found myself getting sick. My mother would shake her head and take my temperature. I wasn’t running a fever. Certain foods and scents would send me running to the bathroom to vomit.

My mother wanted me to go to the doctor, but I was convinced it was simply anxiety over losing Nathan. Then one day I was sitting in the living room with my mother as she watched a morning talk show. The panel of women was discussing a celebrity scandal involving a teen star’s pregnancy.

“Where were the parents?” one woman demanded shrilly. “How does this just happen?”

A picture flashed on the screen of the young starlet. It was an unflattering paparazzi shot of her vomiting in the street. In the beginning, rumors had circulated that she had a drinking problem. It was later revealed she was pregnant and suffering from extreme morning sickness.

Morning sickness.

I sat straight up. Nathan and I hadn’t used protection. I tried to count back the days since my last period. I couldn’t remember. Had a month passed already? My stomach twisted with anxiety.

“What’s wrong?” my mother asked.

“Nothing,” I said sheepishly. “I think I’ll go out for a walk today.”

“Excellent. You could use some fresh air.”

I grabbed my purse and headed out the door to the convenience store down the block. I bought two separate pregnancy tests. Keeping my head lowered, I slinked out of the store like a criminal.

I felt dirty. Did people know I was carrying two pregnancy tests in my purse? That I’d had unprotected sex with my stepbrother? Were people staring? Of course not. I was being paranoid. No one knew.

When I got home, I ran straight to the bathroom. Luckily, my mother was in the kitchen and didn’t notice me. With shaking hands I opened the pregnancy tests. After following the directions, I waited with shaking hands for the results. They came quickly. Positive.

Pregnant with my stepbrother’s baby. If I was depressed before, now I was practically catatonic.  I floated through life not really processing anything. My mother spoke to me. I nodded distantly, not really hearing her.

How could I tell her? She would be shocked. Would she force me to give the baby up for adoption? Did I want to keep it? What would Nathan want? I had no idea.

The spell I was under finally broke when we received a visit from Mia. She waddled into the room; her baby bump having grown significantly in the month since the welcome home party.

“Mia!” my mother said without enthusiasm. “Good to see you.”

I didn’t even bother addressing her. I simply glanced in her direction. The sight of her baby bump made me feel sick. I quickly looked away.

“Can I borrow Olivia? I need some help moving a few boxes.”

“Well, you’d have to ask her,” my mother said. “Liv?”

I rolled my eyes. “I’m busy,” I replied. I lifted the remote control and changed the channel.

“Well, it will only take a minute,” Mia said.

“Liv, help your sister-in-law out. I’m sure she could use a hand.”

“Fine.”

I threw the remote down and jumped up. My mother gave me a strange look. I wasn’t normally this openly hostile towards Mia, but I was feeling irritable today.

I followed her out of the house. As soon as we reached her car she grabbed my elbow and pushed me against the hood.

“Hey!” I protested. Her nails dug into my skin.

“What exactly are you playing at?” she asked.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“I know you were together the night before he left.”

She didn’t have to say anymore. I knew she was referring to my stepbrother.

“You’re sick,” I said.

“Am I? Jackson told me all about your little late night swim with my husband. He even fished your wet panties out of the pool.”

I squirmed and tried to shake my arm free from her grip, but her nails were like talons digging into my skin.

“Jackson? You mean the father of your baby?”

Mia’s eyes narrowed. “My baby is Nathan’s.”

“Then why didn’t you tell him about it? Why haven’t you told
anyone
about it?”

“That’s private, but for your information, Nathan knows.”

I scoffed and rolled my eyes. “Sure, he does.”

“I hope you’re happy. Not only did you sleep with my husband, but now Jackson’s gone because of you.”

“What are you talking about?”

“He had to leave with Nathan.”

“They both redeployed?”

Mia laughed. “You really don’t know anything, do you? They’re not in the Marines anymore.”

Nathan had vaguely mentioned a job, but I had no idea he worked with Jackson for a private company.

“Where are they?” I asked.

Mia released my arm and stepped back. A grin spread across her face. I knew immediately she wouldn’t tell me. She was smug in the knowledge that she knew something I didn’t.

Before she could respond, I quickly asked: “Why was Jackson spying on us?”

The change of subject wiped the smile from her face.

“He went to confront Nathan. For some reason, he’s convinced the baby is his. I’ve told him repeatedly its Nathan’s, but he won’t accept it. That’s when he saw the two of you together in the pool. After you’d gone, he found your underwear floating in the water. He brought it back to me as proof. It wasn’t until last night that he showed them to me. And now he’s gone.”

“What are you really upset about? The fact that you can’t have your cake and eat it too? You think you’re entitled to a husband and a boyfriend? Everyone knows Jackson is the father; everyone in town is talking about it.”

I knew it would drive Mia crazy to know people were gossiping about her. She was always so desperate to control her image as the sweet, bubbly blonde housewife. If she knew what people really thought of her, she would lose her mind.

“Lies,” she hissed. “You’ve been spreading stories about me. When Nathan finds out, he’ll cut you out of his life for good.”

“No he won’t. Not when he finds out what I have to say.”

I bit my tongue. I was so angry I almost told her I was pregnant with Nathan’s baby.

Mia narrowed her eyes and stepped closer. I took a step back.

“What are you hiding?”

“That’s between me and Nathan,” I said.

“There is no ‘you and Nathan.’ There’s only
my
marriage.”

Mia’s raw anger was starting to frighten me. I’d really struck a nerve.

“You may think you can keep a secret, but I’ll find out eventually and when I do, you’re going to regret the day Nathan came home.”

I opened my mouth to respond, but no words came out. I’ve known for years that Mia had a dark side, but I’d never been in her crosshairs until now. Without thinking, I put my hands over my stomach protectively. I had to find Nathan.

PART TWO

“Olivia! Come quick!”

My mother shouted from the other side of the house, but I heard her clearly in my room. The hair on the back of my neck stood on end. Her tone was frantic. My thoughts immediately went to Nathan. Had something happened to him?

I’d been puzzling over my dilemma for weeks. I was pregnant and the father, my stepbrother, had disappeared without a word as to where he was going. I desperately needed him, but I had no idea how to get in touch. The only person who knew his whereabouts was my sister-in-law Mia and she wasn’t talking.

I jumped out of bed and ran out of my room to find my mother standing in the living room. Her face was ashen; her cell phone was clutched in her hand.

“What?” I asked. “Is it Nathan? Is he okay?”

“What?” She looked confused as if she didn’t really hear me. “Nate, he’s…”

“What? Just tell me.”

I thought I would lose my mind if she didn’t tell me.

“He’s in jail.”

“What?” This was not what I’d expected to hear- to say the least. “For what?”

“Mia… she’s in the hospital. She’s in critical condition. She was attacked and she says Nathan’s responsible.”

“Bullshit.”

“Olivia, watch your language.”

For a second my old mom was back and then she remembered the situation we were in. The far off look returned.

“We have to bail him out or talk to a lawyer.” She started to ramble. “They say he attacked her- his pregnant wife.”

She said it as if it was a puzzling question, not a statement of fact. At least my mother hadn’t turned her back on Nate.

“I don’t believe it,” I said.

“No. Of course not. There must be some misunderstanding.”

I ran to my room to grab my things.

“Where are you going?”

“To talk to Nate.”

“No, they won’t let you. Not until he’s been released on bail.”

“Fine,” I said, grabbing the car keys off the dining room table.

“Where are you going?”

“To talk to Mia.”
