Epilogue

Pain seized Heather’s belly like a boa constrictor. She gripped Sean’s hand and tried to breathe through the contraction.

“It’s okay baby. I’m here.”

“Shut.
Up!”

Heather couldn’t get enough air and the boa constrictor moved higher up her belly. She wasn’t going to survive this. What had she been thinking? Sean had been sweet in those first moments as they’d rekindled their relationsh
ip, and the sex had been bountiful and unbelievably hot. Now she wished they’d have spent a whole lot more time on the sex and less time on the getting pregnant. Oh, she was going to die!

A nurse came in and palpated Heather’s belly.
She grimaced under the pressure. There was so much touching. She hadn’t anticipated this much touching. And talking. Someone needed to shut it with the talking. She wanted silence and—“Oh nooooo.”

Heather’s head fell back against the hospital bed as her body contorted with the pain and severity of the contraction.

The nurse took her pulse and wiped her brow with a damp towel. “Just breathe, honey.”

Heather had tried that and it didn’t work for crap. She wanted off the ride. This stopped being fun six hours ago. She didn’t want to go through any more contractions. It finally slowed and she relaxed onto the bed. Sean handed her a cup full of ice chips. “I’m sorry, babe.” He clamped his lips together like he’d just remembered that she told him to shut up.
That made her feel bad. She wanted him here, needed him here. Always.

She tried to smile up at him. “I didn’t mean to yell.”

“It’s okay.” He smiled. “I can take it. You’re the one doing all the work here.”

“Yeah.
What’s up with that? Next time I vote you get to do this part.”

He stroked her belly, rubbing the entire mound. “I would if I could.”

Another contraction gripped her stomach as the doctor came in. “It’s time.”

Several hours later, Heather woke to an empty hospital room. She rubbed her eyes and
smiled as the door eased open.

“Is it okay to come in?”

Heather waved the nurse forward and she wheeled in the small cart. Heather leaned forward and tried to catch a glimpse of the little bodies swaddled inside. As the nurse eased closer to the bed, Heather smiled at the pink and blue knit caps.

The nurse left the room after a few pleasantries.

Finding out they’d been pregnant had been such a wonderful moment. She’d gone to so much trouble that night making dinner and planning the perfect way to tell Sean. Baby carrots, baby portabella mushrooms over baby filets. It had been such a magical night and he’d barely believed her when she told him they’d gotten pregnant. And then when she’d dropped the news about the
second
baby she thought he was going to pass out.

This pregnancy had been bliss and they hadn’t had a single complication. Their doctor had warned them that there might come a time when she’d need to be on bed rest, but Sean had doted on her and allowed her to just focus on being a healthy haven for the babies. Even though she’d been humongous by the time
she delivered, she’d felt wonderful and the babies were healthy.

She couldn’t wait for Sean’s parents to get there, to share in their joy. They were a great help. They’d taken the news of their union and subsequent reunion well, too well, in fact. It was as if the Johnsons had been expecting news like this all along. Heather had always had an easy relationship with Sean’s mother, and since his mother had learned of Heather’s pregnancy, she had taken her under her wing. For Heather, having such a supportive extended family was a lot more than she had ever dreamed of, when she’d dreamed of becoming a mother, a mommy.

And her girls, Selene and Tasha had their own baby stories. She couldn’t wait to be discharged from the hospital so she could hang out with them and swap stories about their bundles of joy. For Heather, life couldn’t be any sweeter.

The pain of miscarrying was still there, but Heather had been doubly blessed with twins, Aidan and
Amaya.

And, most of all, there was Sean.

Her life could not possibly get any better. Heather fixed her gaze on Aidan, the first to pop out
and heavier than his sister by nine ounces, and then she shifted her gaze to Amaya, who was sucking heartily at her closed fist.

“Hungry, aren’t you?”

Amaya was already turning out to be just like her dad, whose thoughts were never too far from food, when they weren’t on Heather. Heather chuckled at the image of father and daughter wolfing down their dinner.

“Anyone home?”
Sean knocked gently on the door and entered the room.

“Oh, great.
You’re here, just in time.”

Sean strolled over and kissed Heather softly on her lips, and grazed his forehead against hers. Then he walked across to the cart which held the twins.

Heather lifted her shirt and mentally braced herself for the sharp pain she expected, since her breasts were so sensitive to touch. And right now was feeding time. She set the nursing pillow on her lap and gestured for Sean to hand her one of the twins. As Sean picked up Amaya, he told a crying Aidan, “Sorry, Aidan. It’s ladies before gents, this time.”

He positioned
Amaya in a cradle hold, and helped her to latch on to Heather’s breast. Heather looked up, and smiled when she saw the expression that crossed Sean’s face as he stared at his daughter.

It was love.

Sean caught Heather looking at him and grinned. He ambled across the room and picked up Aidan, who immediately stopped crying. “Come on, big guy. It’s your turn.” Sean took long strides across the room and positioned his son at Heather’s right breast. He tucked the babies’ legs together so that they crossed in Heather’s lap.

Love for Sean welled up inside Heather. She tilted her head up for his kiss. Sean planted one on her, then the twins, but not before his hungry gaze landed on her breasts. Heather didn’t have to be a genius to know what he was thinking. She was having those same thoughts, too. She chuckled softly at the thought, and the anticipation. Gosh, what was she thinking? She’d given birth just a few hours ago, and already she was thinking about all the decadent things she and Sean would do a few weeks from now. Yeah, lots of things. Heather watched as Sean dragged a chair over and settled down to watch her and the twins.

This was going to be the most favorite part of her day.
