Pulling out the envelope, Daisy discovered that it was red and in the shape of a greeting card. She winced, and her stomach knotted. She didn't want it to be from Drew. Not now. Not when he was gone. He could have put it in the mailbox on Friday when he arrived for the party.

“A little early for a Valentine, isn't it?” Rick said. “That's not for another week.” Seeing her pained expression, he added lightly, “It's probably for Aunt Emily. You know how many admirers she has. I can look at it if you don't want to.”

“No,” Daisy answered, shaking her head. She appreciated the offer, but she had to do it herself.

With reluctance, she tore open the envelope. It was indeed a card. A large crimson heart. When Daisy saw it, her knees quivered, her brain spun, and she almost pitched to the ground. Rick grabbed her before she fell.

“Whoa, darlin'!”

Struggling to breathe, she leaned against his chest. Rick wrapped a sturdy, protective arm around her.

“Daisy?” he asked, gazing at her with concern.

“Matt,” she whispered. Her throat was so tight that she could barely get out the words. “It's from Matt.”

Rick's eyes turned black, but his arm tightened rather than released her. Daisy handed him the card, and he read it aloud.

Roses are red,

Violets are blue.

Don't worry, baby,

Soon I'll be with you.
