The Lindberghs’ home in Maui, built in 1967 on five acres of land purchased from their friend Sam Pryor, whom Charles met in his early days of flying for Pan Am. While Charles loved the beauty of the land, water, and sky, Anne was often left alone, feeling isolated from her friends and family and hating the constant ocean’s roar. In 1971, Alden Whitman and Charles Lindbergh toured the Philippines. Whitman, a seasoned journalist and the editor of the obituary page of
The New York Times
