, This is interesting, an oncologist, a brain surgeon, and a neuroscientist writing a book about natural strategies? Clearly this is one special man.
His accomplishments are too many to list; they would go on for pages. To name just a few, though, he is a board-certified neurosurgeon, an author, and a lecturer. He attended the LSU School of Medicine in New Orleans and completed his general surgical internship and neurosurgical residency at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. During his residency, he ran the neurology program for one year and did a fellowship in neurosurgery after his residency. For the past twenty-five years, he has practiced neurosurgery in addition to having a nutritional practice. He recently retired from both practices to devote himself full-time to nutritional studies and research

Dr. Blaylock was one of the first neurosurgeons to utilize high-intensity nutritional supplementation in trauma patients, which met with great success. He has written and illustrated three books:

SS:
Hello, Dr. Blaylock, so good to have this opportunity to speak with you again. You always inspire, not only me, but also my readers, with your knowledgeable information about the dangers of toxins. Yesterday I was reading about a forty-year-old woman who says she is a healthy eater and who exercises, yet has a very bad brain tumor. How can that be? Doesn’t a good diet provide protection?

RB:
There is a very definite link to women (and men) developing brain tumors who are using aspartame in increasing amounts. They think they are healthy, and they do in fact eat a healthy diet, but they are drinking diet sodas and sweetening with aspartame, which is strongly linked to brain cancer in experimental studies and is also very strongly suggested in our observations.

 
I’VE HEARD FROM A NUMBER OF WOMEN FROM ALL OVER THE UNITED STATES WHO HAVE DEVELOPED BRAIN CANCERS, AND THE COMMON DENOMINATOR IS THAT THEY ARE ALL HEAVY USERS OF ASPARTAME.
 
 

Secondly, there is a strong connection with the huge exposure to pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides. Unfortunately, all these products have a tremendous financial bottom line that the manufacturers don’t want the public to know about for fear they will be frightened off from using them. For instance, take formaldehyde, which out-gases into your house from a number of construction products and releases this known carcinogen into the air.

SS:
Where else do we get this chemical, from carpeting?

RB:
Correct. Plus the fillers they use in different cements and building materials. In addition, aspartame in your food breaks down into formaldehyde.

 
WE ARE NOW BEGINNING TO APPRECIATE THAT WE ARE BEING EXPOSED TO A NUMBER OF VARIABLY TOXIC COMPOUNDS THAT, WHEN COMBINED IN OUR BODIES, CAN TRIGGER A NUMBER OF DISEASES, WHICH INCLUDE CANCER AND DEGENERATION OF THE NERVOUS SYSTEM.
 
 

SS:
Yikes. When you say fillers, do you mean you can buy a brand-new house and not realize you are buying into a toxic environment?

RB:
Yes. For example, I had a patient who built a brand-new beautiful home but had severe chemical reactions to the released toxic components in the house. It was so bad that he was unable to move into it.

SS:
Are you talking about drywall?

RB:
That and most all the new manufactured products, many of which have components that some people are extremely sensitive to, like vinyls, composite woods, certain glues, and other man-made products that are used. In addition, carpet adhesives, solvent, and caulking glues all contain a number of compounds known to produce neurological damage; in particular, formaldehyde is pervasive and powerfully connected to brain tumors. So what probably happened to the woman you mentioned was exposure to a number of toxic chemicals over a period of time. She could also be getting exposure from food. Even though she’s eating vegetables, if they are not thoroughly washed, you can get exposed to a fair amount of pesticides and herbicides.

SS:
This information makes eating organic foods even more important.

RB:
Even organic foods can get contamination from herbicides and pesticides in the atmosphere, or, in some cases, the organic growers think they are using natural pesticides but it might be a fluoride compound
and that is toxic as well. If you are eating organic food but the plant itself isn’t healthy (if it has spots and damaged areas on it), then the plant will secrete carcinogenic substances trying to kill the fungi or viruses that are attacking the plant, so even if you eat organic foods, you have to be sure they are healthy organic foods.

SS:
A person reading this could get pretty discouraged; I mean, if even the organic food isn’t completely healthy, what are we supposed to do?

RB:
I’m just trying to make people aware of the need for vigilance. It’s important to wash your fruits and vegetables and choose healthy-looking organic foods. Another thing related to brain cancer is the dental amalgam. Mercury is a potent inducer of brain cancer and brain tumors. So if this unfortunate woman had dental amalgam fillings, which contain almost 50 percent mercury, or if she’s been vaccinated with mercury-containing (thimerosal) vaccines or lives in a part of the country where there is high atmospheric mercury, like west Texas, she could have trouble.
Eating certain fish could also add to your mercury burden, and these things increase your risk of developing a brain tumor
.

Sadly, there are many, many different environmental toxins that can lead to a tumor. We are under such a terrible inundation by chemicals in the atmosphere and in our food that we really need a higher level of protection than just eating a good diet, which of course is crucial and the foundation of good health.

SS:
So what can we do?

RB:
What you can do to help is:

    • Eat at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day to derive any benefit. It takes ten to fifteen servings to get maximum benefits. That is a lot of fruits and vegetables. The reason it takes so many is that only about 30 percent of vegetable nutrients are absorbed with eating. This is because the nutrients in vegetables are locked within the cells of the plant and we do not have enzymes to dissolve the cell walls of vegetables. This means that you either have to chew the vegetables extremely well or grind them up in a blender—which I do. Running vegetables through a blender releases 80 percent of their nutrients for absorption.

    • Because of the high level of toxic chemicals, we need additional antioxidants, such as flavonoids (mostly brightly colored fruits and vegetables, but also in some colorless vegetables) and the
basic vitamins and minerals that maximize your ability to neutralize these toxins. For instance, green tea has been found to be a very potent neutralizer of benzene, which is a major carcinogen.
