In Hot Water

THE THREE OF THEM STOOD outside of the Spencers’ room back at the resort.

“She’s not going to want to see me,” Earl said.

“Give her a chance. You never know.” Sara spoke the words but she didn’t hold out much optimism in this case. The man had cheated on his wife, set up his disappearance, was going to fake his death. Some things were unforgivable, even to Sara.

“You promised you’d come in with me,” Earl said.

Sara nodded and passed a glance to Sean.

They had spent hours explaining everything to the militia. They’d filled them in on Amelia’s murder and how they were detectives from the United States. They made the call to Voigt who confirmed their cover.

They definitely owed the man a large bottle of fine cognac.

The three of them were free to go, but Daren Wolfe would never see the light of day again. It turned out that when he fell he broke a piece off of the monument. Now there was a territorial war between the US government, the militia, and the Mexican police. Either way, Daren would live the rest of his life behind bars.

Sara took a deep breath and turned the handle. Sean followed behind her and Earl trailed in last.

Catherine Spencer was sitting on the couch, her expression devoid of emotion until she saw her husband’s face. Tears fell down her cheeks.

He ran to her and got to his knees. “I’m so, so sorry.”

The Spencers hugged and both were crying.

Catherine pulled back first. Teary-eyed she looked from Sara to Sean. “Thank you so much for bringing him back to me.”

“You’re welcome,” Sean said as he put his arm around Sara.

In the hallway, Sean smiled at Sara, thankful that both of them were still in one piece. He kissed the top of her head. “I guess all’s well that ends well. At least, that’s what they say.”

She lifted the bag of money. “It seems to me, someone promised me a shopping trip when this was all over. I’m thinking this should about cover it. At least I’ll be able to get a few new things.” She laughed, and as always, the sound was as music to his ears.

“Whatever you want, darling.” His eyes softened in response to hers. “I guess we’re going to have to go on another honeymoon to make up for this one.” He said the words, feeling her out.

“Really? I thought it’s been wonderful.” Sara paused. “I’ve also been thinking.”

“That’s dangerous.”

“Hey. I don’t think I’m ready to retire any time soon.”

“But we’ve already given our notice.”

“I’m not talking in reference to Albany PD.”

“Now I’m listening.”

“Why don’t we solve mysteries on our own? Let’s face it,
we have the talent.” She winked at him.

“You mean become private investigators?”

“Yeah, something like that.” She tucked her chin into her shoulder. “Or maybe something more off the books? How does that sound to you?”

“Sounds like fun, but first, there’s another adventure I’m ready for.”

“And what’s that, darling?”

“Since you love a good mystery, I’ll leave it up to you to interpret the first clue.”

Sean pulled her in tight and kissed her.
