Hold the needle with the slip knot in your left hand and an empty needle in your right hand. Hold the working yarn as if you are going to knit.

Insert the right-hand needle tip into the slip knot as if to purl. Wrap the yarn around and pull through a new stitch.

Transfer the new stitch purlwise (as if to purl) to the left-hand needle.

Continue in this manner, purling into the last stitch on the left-hand needle and transferring the new stitch to the left-hand needle until you have the desired number of stitches.

Cable Cast On

The Cable Cast On is another knitted cast on
that uses two needles. The edge is firm and not very elastic, and the appearance is neat. It is a useful cast on for adding stitches mid project because it uses just the working end of yarn. This comes in handy when adding stitches at the end of the row or when doing a one-row buttonhole. See Alternating Cable Cast On (
page 49
) for the ribbed version of this cast on.

CHARACTERISTICS

• Firm edge

GOOD FOR

• One-row buttonholes

• Adding stitches at ends of rows

Working the Cast On

Make a slip knot, leaving a short tail, and place it on the left-hand needle.

Knit into the slip knot, leaving the slip knot on the left-hand needle.

Slip the new stitch back to the left-hand needle knitwise.
