“No, Luke. I used Kate’s spell book to do this. I wasn’t going for this exactly—”

“What do you mean?” He was rambling but couldn’t help himself. Seeing his parents with Megan was too surreal, too close to his darkness. Once she knew, she would leave him.

“Son, relax. We’re here. I can sense you doubt what you see and hear.” The image of his father smiled broadly. “Am I right?”

“The spell I invoked was actually a truth spell.” Megan stood up and walked to him. “I wanted to know the truth about why you had trouble with me going to Kate’s shower.
Voilà.
Instead of some disembodied voice telling me what I desired, your parents showed up to fill me in.” She sat down beside him on the bed and took his hands.

He looked back at his parents, still floating by the table. “Is it really you?”

His mother’s eyes sparkled brightly, just like he remembered them. “Yes, honey.”

“I’m sorry, Luke. I didn’t mean to open up this can of worms.”

He closed his eyes and shook his head. “I thought I’d never see them again. I’m the reason they’re dead, Megan. I caused it. I did it.”

“Shh, Luke.” She put her arm around him. “That isn’t what happened at all. Ask them.”

He glanced up at his parents. Their arms were around each other.

“Son, we’ve been watching you since we left. You’ve been carrying that crushing guilt for too long.”

“But I killed you,” he choked out.

“You didn’t. It was an accident. That’s all.”

His mother’s spirit floated next to him. He could actually feel her hand as she cupped his chin. “Your father and I passed on together, Luke. And though I wish we could’ve been with you to help you, we have been together ever since.”

His dad’s spirit came up behind his mother’s. “We will never be apart, son. Ever. Now you have a chance to embrace a beautiful woman. Honor our memory by living, Luke.”

The images of his parents began to fade.

“I will.”

“I love you, son.” His dad smiled.

His mother kissed his cheek, and he felt a tingle where her spirit lips touched him. “I love you, Luke. We’ll always be close. Take good care of him, Megan.”

“I will,” she said, tears rolling down her cheeks.

As the images of his parents faded out completely, Luke pulled Megan close. She had healed his pain and brought light into his world. She was his mate, his true love, and the woman he would spend the rest of his life with.

“I love you, Megan.”

Chapter Eleven

Megan opened her eyes and saw the warm glow of sunbeams coming in from the cabin’s windows. Exhausted by the conjuring of Luke’s parents, she’d quickly fallen asleep in his arms. The next time her grandmother visited the cabin, Megan would ask her if the magic tea they’d sipped might’ve been the cause that turned the truth spell she’d tried to cast into a more powerful spell that brought forth the departed. It wasn’t something that she wanted to try again.

Luke wasn’t in the bed with her. In fact, he wasn’t in the cabin. On his pillow was a note for her and the keys to his truck.

Sweetheart,

Have fun at your sister’s shower.

Love,

Luke

Megan’s heart flip-flopped. She was the luckiest woman in the world to have Luke, a man who loved her beyond anything she’d ever known possible. And she loved him. Kissing the note from Luke, she grabbed the keys.

In time, she imagined he might actually go with her to Kate’s or her Gran’s. Baby steps.

As Megan got ready to go, she felt deliciously lighthearted. Less than a month ago, she hadn’t known witches, spirits, or wolf shifters even existed. Now, her whole world was alive with magic, and at its center was Luke—her wolf.

* * * *

Sitting on the sofa between Kate and Gran, Megan looked at the crowd, both men and women, who had come to the shower. The mixing of genders that Kate’s two fiancés had requested for the event worked perfectly. But it wasn’t just a mix of genders in attendance. Only a few were not of some kind of magical ilk. That thought made her grin.

Suddenly Heather, her and Kate’s youngest sister, appeared from the hallway that led to the bedrooms, yawning. “You started without me?”

According to Kate and Gran, Heather had arrived late last night in a whirlwind of suitcases and stories about her travels abroad.

“Of course we did, sweetie.” Gran motioned Heather to sit beside her.

Standing by Rance and Troy at the counter with all the food, Hawk followed Heather’s every move with his unwavering eyes.

Knowing Heather’s ethereal ways and seeing how Hawk acted on the night he and Kate’s men had come to take her from Luke, Megan didn’t believe such a coupling would have any chance of working. Once Heather knew that they were all witches, including her, only the fates knew what she would do. Thankfully, Gran had recommended they hold off telling her until after the shower.

“Did I get here in time for Make up the Bride?” Heather asked.

Megan felt Kate squeeze her hand, sending a clear message that the game wasn’t something she wanted to do.

“Let’s hold off on that, Heather. There’s still more gifts for Kate to open.”

“Sure. Looks like quite the haul.”

Kate smiled. “I’m very lucky to have such great family and friends.”

She was going to be an amazing wife and mother.

Megan looked over at Rance and Troy.

They gazed at Kate as if she were a work of art in a museum. Megan was certain they would be amazing husbands and dads, too.

Megan couldn’t wait to have children with Luke. He would be a terrific father. She patted her own belly, wondering what it would feel like to be pregnant.

Gran patted her hand. “You already know?” she whispered.

“Know what?”

“Nothing,” she answered, the lie obvious on her lips.

“Tell me.”

“Honey, you are pregnant.”

Megan let that sink in. How could Gran know such a thing? She’d only just been with Luke a few days. But Gran was a witch and an experienced one at that. She knew.

“I am. Really?”

“Yes, really,” she whispered.

“Don’t tell anyone until I have a chance to tell Luke.”

“Sure, sweetie.” Gran pointed to the front door, which someone had just opened for the next guest to arrive. “Now’s your chance. He just arrived.”

Her jaw dropped. Standing in the doorway was her lone wolf, dressed in a suit that didn’t quite fit with a tie that was a decade or so out of date. He looked so perfect. Her Big Bad Wolf had transformed into Prince Charming, making her feel like a fairy-tale princess.

Luke scanned the room and smiled at her when their eyes locked.

All eyes turned to him and several people actually gasped.

Hoping to rescue him from good-intentioned people with a million questions, she leapt from the sofa and ran into his arms. “You came.”

“Hardest thing I’ve done in a long time, Megan. I’m not really fond of people. And crowds…well, you get the point.”

The sacrifice Luke had made for her to come to Kate’s party filled her with joy.

“I’ve got some news.”

His eyebrows shot up. “I’m listening.”

She shook her head. “Not here. I’ll tell you back at
our
place.”

He touched her cheek. “Whenever you’re ready to go, just say so.”

“Let’s go home, Luke.” She touched his tie. “Thank you for coming. It means a lot to me.”

“For you, sweetheart, I’ll do anything.”

She looked into his yellow-brown eyes and saw her future. “I love you so much.”

He kissed her, and her toes curled. “I love you, too, little trespasser.”
