october 25, 2001 A meeting is held involving Patty, Harlowe, Schwaemle, District Attorney Brian Blanchard, and victim/witness advocate Mark Kerman.

december 5, 2001 Another meeting is held, this one with Schwaemle, Kerman, Harlowe, and Patty. Patty is told that the state will prosecute if she desires. She does.

may 19, 2002 After additional delays, the district attorney’s office drafts a criminal complaint. The suspect makes his initial appearance in Dane County court, where he is charged with five felony offenses.

july 22, 2002 Patty testifies at a preliminary hearing; the judge decides there is enough evidence to make the suspect stand trial.

august 2002 The suspect is arraigned and enters a plea of not guilty.

december 2003

A pretrial hearing is held in Dane County court.

february 2003 A status conference is held; Judge Gerald Nichol denies a defense motion to dismiss the charges.

july 2003 The trial is delayed due to newly discovered additional DNA evidence.

september 2003

A motion hearing is held; Judge Nichol subsequently orders all of Patty’s psychological records turned over to the defense.

november 2003 The trial is postponed again, this time because the defendant is ill.

february 27, 2004 A motion hearing is held regarding Patty’s “prior untruthful allegations of sexual assault.”

march 8, 2004 A jury is selected and the trial begins.

march 12, 2004 The trial concludes and a jury verdict is rendered.
