I nod.
“Can I go back to my game now?”
I don’t answer. Instead, I focus on my mark. Who is this wrench that can turn, no,
convert
a “father” into a “reverend?” Does she possess ineffable beauty? Is she perhaps exotic and alluring? Has she perhaps read my book that Rival has stolen and tragically published?
“Show me Clover Callan. I demand to see what she looks like.”
“Sure thing, Scarlett. I’ll be right back.” My minion runs off. A few minutes later, she races up to me. “Come with me. Quick.”
When I see Clover, I shake my head. He’s married to her? Seriously? Makeup-free Clover Colin is dull, thin, around five foot six, with shoulder-length hair, hazel eyes, and in dire need of a tan.
“Can I go now?”
I turn to look at Nicola. “Yeah, you can fuck off!”
After Nicola leaves, my mind goes into overdrive, and I start to pace. In less than thirty minutes, my astute brain comes up with a plan.
Colin is my ticket out of here. See, I could easily pass for Clover. All I need is to tone down my hair, for a while dress like her, mimic her mannerisms and voila! I’m Clover Colin.
First, I would need to seduce Colin. Then I would need to persuade him to leave Sydney with Clover. I will meet them en route, where I will kill Clover, hide her body, and assume her identity. Reverend Colin is far too handsome to be a mere pastor. He needs to be an energetic evangelist, a charismatic preacher who uses his charm to draw people from far and near and persuades them to part with their money. I could easily engineer all of it – Colin’s motivational talks, religious seminars, and most importantly, the faith healing. We could even do what I currently do – talk to the dead. But on a grander scale. For a fee, of course. All for a fee. Imagine how much money we can make. My excitement grows.
We will target rural, outback towns in need of hope. Reverend Colin and I could become a power couple, a force to be reckoned with, and with all the money we make, we could be set for life. All I need to do is seduce Colin, draw him into my thrall and persuade him to help me escape. Simple, isn’t it? The question is: how do I set up this pivotal encounter with Colin?
They call him when patients get suicidal.
I smile as Nicola’s words reverberate in my head.
The next morning, I am in the prison infirmary with bloodied wrists. Of course I don’t want to die, so I’ve had Nicola slit them just a little. Just enough to cause a commotion and instill fear among the prison wardens.
As expected, the mere sight of the blood has them rushing me to the prison hospital and placing me under suicide watch. The question is: will the handsome and rugged reverend Colin come calling?
It takes six hours before my plan comes to fruition. But when I see him, I allow myself an inward smile. A smug one.
“Reverend, pray for me, bless my soul, please, for I do not wish to live anymore.”
He takes my hand in his. “Why is that, Scarlett?” His hand is large and warm, comforting. It’s the kind of hand I’d want if I really am facing demise.
“Reverend, I’m am being framed by someone extremely vicious, and I know not how to handle life anymore.” Tears stream down my face. “Nobody believes me, my reputation has been destroyed, and God, Reverend, he has forsaken me. Nobody cares. What is the point of living? Death would be so much easier.”
He sits next to me and holds my hand. “Scarlett, I care. I am here. I’m going to help you and soon, I assure you, you will find strength to continue, and you will change the way you perceive life.”
“Is that possible, Reverend?”
“Yes it is, Scarlett.”
He talks for a while and I listen, mesmerized by his baritone voice.
“Tell me what you miss most, Scarlett. Do you miss your family?”
I take a deep breath, and in a forlorn voice say, “Touch. That’s what I miss most. I haven’t had a hug in months, and I feel so…so
untouched
. Can you do a dying woman a favor and give me a hug, Reverend?”
After a nanosecond of hesitation, he says, “Absolutely, Scarlett.”
As I wrap my arms around one of the most beautiful men I have ever seen in my life and inhale his scent, I think to myself,
I’m going to take you on a magic carpet ride, so buckle up, Colin.
Oh, and it’s Callan, not Colin. Please don’t get that wrong.
