"Right?" I reply, taking a sip of my beer.
"Nothing sexier."

It took Jo a while to come back to a Hounds party. She was
able to forgive me because she knew me, but the rest of my brothers she felt
wary of. My being on probation was probably good for her; it allowed her time
to ease into club life slowly, getting to know each brother individually rather
than seeing us as some scary pack.

And we were finally able to take that vacation I promised
her. We drove all across the Western states, sleeping under the stars. Now
we're settled in our new place together, with a big backyard. We decided that
we wanted to start over in a new place, not move into the house where I'd been
a bachelor.

"Hey!" Bark yells, getting up on a stump next to
the fire and clinking two empty beer bottles together to get everyone's
attention. People start to gather around, and I feel Jo's arm wrapping around
my waist. I pull her tight against me. "Before this party gets too out of
control, I just want everyone to raise a glass to Holt. It's been one whole
fucking year, and we're glad to have you off of probation now, brother."

A cheer goes up and everyone takes a sip of beer, myself
included. Cara waves her hand at Jo across the circle.

"It's unlucky not to drink, Jo! Here!" She walks
around the fire to hand Jo a beer. "C'mon, open it for her, babe,"
she says to Wilkes.

"Oh, no thanks. I'm OK," Jo demurs.

"But it's unlucky!" Cara protests.

"No,
really
, I'm OK," Jo says, staring at
her oddly. There's silence for a moment, and Cara gasps.

"What?" Wilkes says next to me. We frown at each
other in confusion.

"Nothing," Cara says.

"Yeah, forget it. It's fine!" Elise says, joining
in.

"What the fuck's going on?" I murmur, looking
between them. Cara winces. Jo sighs and turns to me.

"Well, I was going to wait to tell you, since this is
your night and everything," she whispers. "But the reason I'm not
drinking is because…I'm pregnant. Just took a test this morning."

I stare down at her in shock. I mean, she just went off
birth control a couple weeks ago. We thought we would have months.

With a wild whoop, I pick her up in a basket carry.
"Jo's pregnant! She's pregnant!" I yell.

"Oh my god, Holt," she cries, blushing with
embarrassment as all eyes turn to her.

"Well, put her down!" Wilkes says, laughing.

"Right, right, sorry," I murmur, setting her back
on her feet. My brothers surround me, patting me on the back and offering Jo
their congratulations. We're soon pulled from away from each other, drawn into
different conversations about this new baby. A baby. I can barely believe it.

I glance toward her and she looks up as though she knows I'm
watching her. We smile at each other, knowing our lives will never be the same,
but always with each other.
