Michael explained with a bittersweet smile
upon his handsome face. “You see, dark energy and light energy are
complete opposites. Their strengths are the same whereas the
rainbows of colors in between, or frequencies, are weaker.” Michael
paused for a moment, getting a sense of whether David understood.
After a moment, he continued. “So, even though the dark energies
can't destroy you, they can alter you. Light energy is a high
vibration, while dark energy is a low vibration.”

'Is that why you can't touch me or
communicate telepathically with me?' David wondered.

“Exactly, my frequency is much higher than
your own. Even though it is a positive energy, if I were to touch
you, I could harm you by forcing your molecules to begin vibrating
too fast, too soon. Likewise, if the dark energies touch you, your
frequency could slow too quickly and...Well, it's not a pretty
topic.”

'I see.' David said, feeling a little
uncertain about his future.

“But no worries Dave, once we figure out your
weapon, all will make sense.”

“So, this 'weapon' will protect me from the
dark energies?” David enquired.

“Yes, depending on the strength of your
weapon, you may be able to send the creatures running for cover or
it may just stun them and give you enough time to get away.”

“What is the weapon exactly?” David
wondered.

“It depends, everyone's is different. It's
like a gift each soul is given and until you open it, you don't
know what it is.” Michael explained.

“What's yours?” David's blue eyes brightened
as he asked Michael with building interest.

Laughing heartily at David's new-found
excitement, Michael stood to give him a demonstration.

“Stand back.” Michael instructed David with a
mischievous grin.

Michael closed his eyes and concentrated for
a moment. David watched intently as Michael's entire body
illuminated a silver glow from within. As the internal aura grew,
Michael's body radiated with white energy. Even his tattoos burned
sylvan, like magnesium strips lit a fire. As the energy surged
around him, his wings spread out forcefully. The pulse roared
around Michael, faster and faster, until it released an enormous
explosion of silver fire. Michael, now engulfed in flames, shone
with a metallic hue. His once black hair, now pure silver, blew
straight up from the force of the fiery hurricane.

The inferno roared around Michael in a
perfect circle, while tendrils of fire speared like a snake's
tongue at items in the room, disintegrating them on contact.

As the heavenly fire roared down to an ember,
David grinned with sheer admiration.

“That was amazing!!” David said as the angel
returned to normal.

“Thanks.” Michael answered sheepishly,
combing his fingers through his tangled hair. “You try.” the angel
added, grinning.

“Protect...protect...” David considered the
act as he closed his eyes. He had drawn strength for healing from
the love he felt for his daughter. At a loss, he tried to think of
a time when he wanted to protect someone.

As he scanned through his memories like
flipping through the pages of a book, he paused on the memory of
his mother's face, just before she died. He remembered that while
she was sick, all he'd ever wanted was to take away the pain, to
protect her from the suffering.

David focused all the energy from the core of
his soul onto the image of his mother's pained expression. Rippling
waves of energy began coursing through David's ethereal body. It
was a much different experience than the healing energy; it had
been smooth and soft, whereas this was powerful.

As he harnessed the energy pulsating within
him, he felt it reaching a peak. When the force reached a climax,
David opened his eyes and released the full force of the
crescendo.

Raising his hands, an enormous silver wave
formed around David's torso. Releasing the energy, the sylvan wave
suddenly plunged forward, crashing into Michael's desk across the
room.

“Cool!” Michael exclaimed, clapping excitedly
while the tides of energy flooded back towards David.

“Wow!” David grinned happily as he examined
his hands, mystified that he'd actually created that.

“Good job! I would say you're ready for the
field trip now.” Michael said with an edge of mystery in his
voice.

Linger

Slowly the world came into focus. Shades of
grays separated themselves once again, allowing Lily to see
clearly.

Weak, she slowly picked herself up off the
floor. After a moment, she recalled the attack. Looking quickly at
her leg, she was happy to see it had almost healed. Instead of pure
black, it was now a mottled collage of black and gray.

Surveying her surroundings, she recognized
her parents' living room. Everything was the same as she
remembered. Her father's ratty old smoking chair with its armrests
nearly worn to the wood and the faded, flowery area rug that her
mother made her father drag all the way from Ireland. An oil
painting Sheridan made for their parents twentieth wedding
anniversary hung upon the wall.

Wandering through the quiet house, Lily
wondered where everyone was. There should've been all kinds of
hustle and bustle going on. Like Quinn searching for her hairbrush,
her long hair sticking out all over or Sheridan, playing the piano
in the den. Or her father, snoring loudly in front of the
television while her mother cooked supper in the kitchen.

Where is everyone? Lily thought sadly. Wait!
Maybe it's nighttime, they're all in bed!

Lily was so excited to get upstairs. Finally,
she could see her family again. Even though they couldn't see her,
at least she could be near them. Moving as fast as she could, she
ascended the stairwell.

Entering into the first room, she could see
her mother and father sleeping peacefully in their bed. Carefully,
she tip-toed across the floor, knowing there were many creaks and
squeaks in the old floorboards. It took her a few steps before she
remembered that she didn't have to worry about making noise
anymore.

Duh Lily, She thought, you're a ghost!

Lily walked to her mother's side of the bed
and gently sat beside her. Inspecting every line and contour on her
mother's face, Lily felt her heart warm. It had been so long since
she'd seen her face. As Lily studied her face, her mother suddenly
stirred as though dreaming.

Visiting her father's side of the bed, she
giggled as she watched him snore with his mouth wide open. Kissing
him lightly on the forehead, she then moved on to visit
Sheridan.

Moving down the hall, Lily stopped in front
of Sheridan's bedroom door. It was closed. So far, Lily hadn't had
to worry about trying to open any doors. When she was stuck in the
tree house, she'd just followed Gabe out of the trap door.

When she first entered the house, Gabe had
left the front door open. This closed door presented a challenge
for Lily, but being stubborn, she wasn't about to give up.

She chose to see if she could just walk
through the door. It appeared to be the most logical approach,
considering she was a ghost. Raising her translucent hand to the
door, she pressed lightly, testing the solidity. Expecting the laws
of physics to apply, Lily was surprised there was no resistance
whatsoever. It was as though the door didn't even exist.

Passing through the door, she looked over at
Sheridan's bed, eager to see her little sister. Sheridan was fast
asleep, snoring lightly. Lily sat on the edge of the bed and
admired her sister's beautiful features. Her hair cut short,
Sheridan looked fashionable and mature. Lily felt sad she'd missed
the last few years of her sister's life. Touching her cheek with
the back of her transparent hand, Lily whispered to her little
sister, “I love you.”

Stirring lightly in her slumber, Sheridan
mumbled in return, “I love you too, Lily.”

Shocked, Lily stood up and backed away.
Disbelief coursed through her as she let the magnitude of the
moment settle in.

“She can hear me!” Lily thought with awe. “I
wonder if everyone can hear me when they are sleeping.”

Excited, Lily left Sheridan's room and walked
down the hall to Quinn's room. The door was wide open, not that
closed doors presented a problem for Lily anymore. Entering into
her little sister's room, she was saddened to see Quinn was not in
her bed.

I wonder where on earth that girl could be at
this hour! She thought, puzzled. Not that Lily had any idea what
time it was, but it had to be late.

Disappointed, she left Quinn's room. As she
walked out, she came face to face with her old room. The door was
closed but Lily noticed a dim light shining from the crack
underneath. Curious, she passed through her door.

Looking around the room, she was pleased to
see it had been left virtually untouched since the last time she'd
seen it. The only difference she could see was a soft nightlight
was glowing within the room.

Looking at her bed, she was shocked to see
there was someone sleeping there! She was suddenly reminded of the
story of Goldilocks and the three bears. “Someone is sleeping in my
bed.” She thought to herself with a giggle.

Nearing the edge of the bed, she peeked at
the mystery guest. All huddled up in the blankets and facing away
from her, it was difficult to see. Leaning way over, Lily gasped as
she recognized the face.

“Gabe!”

Lily jumped onto the bed and since she
couldn't really touch him, she just pretended to cuddle with him.
Snuggling into his back, she whispered out loud, “I miss you.”

Gabe moved restlessly, and then replied in
his unconscious state. “I miss you so much Lily.”

Ecstatic that she'd learned a way to
communicate with her loved ones, she sat up and smiled. Relief
swept through her as she realized she no longer had to be alone
anymore. Even though it was a diminished existence compared to what
she'd had while alive, she was thrilled at this point to have
contact with anyone!

Gabe moaned lightly in his sleep as he
shifted positions. Moving from his left side to his back, he moved
his right arm up over his head. As he did, someone else moved on
the far side of the bed.

Long curly hair cascaded over the pillow.
Tendrils of light-colored tresses streamed elegantly from her
head.

In shock, tears began to run down Lily's
face, “That's just like my hair...and the only other person that I
know with hair like mine is...Quinn.”

Field Trip

“This way David.” Michael called.

Acres of lush green grass surrounded them as
they walked to the center of a meadow. The air embraced David,
hugging him close to Heaven's atmosphere. A rosy haze of
condensation hung in the air making the sky appear as though it
were blushing.

“Where are we going?” David asked as they
strolled through the field. It would've been too dangerous for
Michael to transport David at his usual angelic pace, so they chose
to take the slow, scenic route.

“Here.” Michael grinned as he stopped and
looked back at David, who'd been trailing behind the tall
angel.

“Oh.” David responded with a smile, his blue
eyes shining as he looked around, wondering what could be so
special about this exact spot.

Michael gave David a funny look, like he
should know where they were. David returned a confused look.

“Field trip...you know...field.” Michael
laughed heartily, his deep voice booming through the sky like
thunder.

David, finally getting the joke, shook his
head and laughed with the chuckling angel.

“Okay,” Michael said as he wiped away an
imaginary tear, “ready to go?”

“Where?” David asked as he glanced around at
the empty field, perplexed.

“Earth.”

The enormous angel then cupped his hands
together as if receiving an imaginary stream of water. As David
continued to watch, transfixed on the angel's hands, he saw a small
sparkle of light emerging. The little light danced and swirled in
Michael's large palms, doubling in size with every pulse. Faster
and faster, the twinkle grew until it soon became the size of a
basketball. The illuminated nexus suddenly spun itself out of the
confines of the angel's fingers and into the air.

It grew exponentially larger with every
pulsation. Spinning faster, the resonating white nexus suddenly
exploded open, giving birth to a churning vortex. A rainbow of
colors spun together in a whirlpool of light.

The newly formed doorway extended itself
backwards, forming a long tunnel behind it. Twisting and writhing,
the tunnel shot far in the distance, into a long silver rope. The
silvery chord, who's end could not been seen, swayed in the
breeze.

A large threshold now stood before them,
taller than even the Archangel himself. Though it was similar to
the light tunnel which greeted David at the moment of his death,
this one was much bigger.

“Ready?” The dark-haired angel asked as he
offered the entrance to David.

“Um...you first.” David responded with a
nervous glance.

Laughing, Michael obliged and entered the
hurricane. Looking back at David, his body illuminated, he nodded
for him to follow.

Taking a brave breath, David stepped over the
threshold and disappeared into the tunnel after Michael.

Akin to an ocean breeze, a cool wind blew
upon David's face. A tingling and exhilaration embraced him as the
wind ran its invisible fingers through his hair. Coral, emerald and
lavender shades waltzed past his vision as he floated down the
tunnel of light.

Physically and spiritually, David felt all of
these things and more as he and Michael descended through the
wormhole. The further they moved through the tunnel, the stranger
David's ethereal body felt. At first, he felt light and feathery,
as he'd felt the entire time in the fifth dimension, but as they
moved downward, he began to feel heavy and dense.
