The white dragon spread out its wing from the side of its body and moved it closer to where Nick was standing. Nick took the signal and crawled on top of the dragon’s wing. The dragon lifted its wing as Nick climbed on top, which allowed Nick to grab a hold of a spike to hoist himself up. He maneuvered his way up the dragon’s back to find the sweet spot where he could sit at the bottom of the dragon’s neck. There were no spikes there and the spot was actually twice as big as the dragon Cezalon’s.

Nick sat for a moment and thought of the commands to give the dragon according to Dricos.

He leaned forward a bit and used the command to take flight. “Silner!”

The white dragon jolted up off of the ground and spread its massive wings. Nick held onto the white spikes in front of him tightly. It flapped its wings and began to ascend into the sky above them. Within seconds Nick was high in the sky.

It was a magical sight to behold. Nick was flying into the horde of thousands of dragons flying in the sky. It was a chaotic masterpiece. Dragons flying in every which direction. As the white dragon flew towards the other dragons they flew in a different direction. The other dragons feared the white dragon or had some sort of respect for it; Nick could not tell which one it was. He could only be under the presumption that the white dragon was the king of the sky.

The white dragon stopped ascending into the sky and flapped its wings to stay stationary. Nick was at the heart of all of the dragons flying around him. No other dragons came near the white dragon and Nick. They all flew around them in a giant sphere in the sky. It was unlike anything Nick had seen in his entire life. It was unlike anything he had ever heard of in his life. It was a mystical moment that was unparalleled.

After a few minutes of being in that state Nick gave the next command, telling the dragon to land. “Taltu!”

The white dragon immediately turned its body to face the ground and began to descend from the heavens. It got a few hundred feet towards the ground before stopping its flight. It flapped its wings and stood stationary because a red dragon equal in size was in its way right below it. The red dragon let out a roar followed by a breath of fire directed at the white dragon. The white dragon swooped downwards to avoid the fire. The two dragons roared at each other and got at the same eye level.

I hope this dragon is good at fighting.

CHAPTER TWO

The white dragon Nick was riding on was staring down the red dragon in front of it. Nick knew what was going to happen. All he could do from where he sat was to hold on to the dragon with every ounce of strength that he had. A fight was inevitable. Nick had never seen dragons fight before; he did not know what to expect.

The red dragon made its first move, lunging towards the white dragon with its sharp claws. The red dragon grabbed hold of the white dragon by its side and flung it through the air. Nick could not see anything; he only felt the force of gravity working against his body as the white dragon twisted in turned in the sky. The white dragon regained its composure and stopped turning. It let out a breath of ice that landed on the red dragon’s right wing. The wing was frozen instantly. The red dragon began to fall from the sky as it could not stay in the air with only one operating wing.

The white dragon took no time to follow the red dragon as it fell and let out a breath of fire that landed on the red dragon, burning it. Unfortunately, the fire also released the red dragon’s wing from being frozen. It flew straight up at the white dragon with its mouth wide open. Luckily, the jaws of the beast missed the white dragon’s neck. The dragon’s neck hit with an incredible force, so much so that it launched Nick from the back of the white dragon’s neck and Nick began to free fall from the sky.

The white dragon opened its mouth and clenched its teeth upon the red dragon’s neck. While the white dragon had the red dragon’s neck in its grasp, it also let out a breath of fire. The red dragon’s neck nearly split in half. The dismembered body of the red dragon fell from the sky.

Nick continued to fall from the sky. He yelled and yelled in fear. The air rushed upon his face and his ears were facing the loudness of the fall. He looked down and saw the ground below him. It was coming closer and closer with each passing second. The details on the ground became clearer as he descended from the sky.

Suddenly the white dragon made its way to be directly at Nick’s side. In one perfect swoop, the dragon went underneath Nick’s fall and gently tucked him on the bottom of his neck. The white dragon had safely stopped Nick from falling to his death.

“Thank you...thank you,” said Nick.

His hands were trembling as he tried to adjust himself until he was once again sitting along the dragon’s neck. He placed his shaking hands upon the dragon’s spikes and tried to catch his breath. He could feel his heart racing out of his chest. The adrenaline was unlike any kind he had experienced before.

“Right. Let’s try this again. Taltu,” said Nick.

The white dragon made its way to the ground near the wall of the dragons’ lair. Nick jumped off. It was no easy jump. He felt like he was still incredibly high in the air even when the dragon was leaning its head on the ground.

The white dragon lay on the ground while Nick walked around a quarter of the dragons’ lair before he made his way back into Dricos’ cabin. He opened the door to be graciously welcomed by the old Reza lady. “Oh, so glad to see that you’re still alive. How was your first flight? How is the dragon?”

“Well, I suppose the first flight could have gone worse,” said Nick. “I am still alive. The dragon is completely unreal. I have never seen such of a massive dragon. It is white and must stretch seventy feet in length.”

“A white dragon?” asked Dricos.

“Yes, a white dragon,” said Nick.

“I have never seen anyone find themselves a white dragon,” said Dricos. “That is surprising. White dragons are the most rare. They hold superiority over most dragons. You must be something truly special, Nick Bint.”

“All I know is I want to lie down,” said Nick. “This dragon flying business is completely overwhelming. My mind and body need to rest. Look at me; I’m still shaking.”

Nick held out his hands to show Dricos that they were shaking uncontrollably. She pointed Nick to her bed and told him to shut his eyes. She knew and understood all too well how difficult it was to go through what Nick had just done.

Blood dripped from the tips of Nick’s fingertips. Fire ravaged the north bend and everyone he loved was lying dead on the ground. The six had flown their dragons into the north bend. They laughed as the joke of a battle ended so quickly. Nick looked down to find a golden arrow pierced through his heart. Blood, so much blood. The ground was covered in a thick layer of red blood. The flames reflected and danced in the red blood. A black dragon came down and landed in front of Nick.

Vicon sat upon the red-eyed beast with his black hood. He pulled up his hood to reveal Christopher Bint’s face.

“You fool, you should have joined me when you had the chance,” said Vicon.

“No, you spawned from the essence of evil,” said Nick.

“We would have ruled the world together,” said Vicon.

“Die, now!” said Vicon.

The jaws of the black dragon opened wide. Its sharp yellow teeth wrapped all the way around Nick. Everywhere he looked there was the dragon’s teeth. However, they did not pierce his skin. They just stood still and studied him, as if they had eyes of their own. A light grew from the end of the dragon’s throat. The sun could be seen at the end of its throat. Nick placed his hand up towards the sun. He was instantly transported to a beautiful land.

Sunshine as waves crashed on the beach below while he stood on a grass filled hilltop. It was immaculately beautiful. Everything was perfect, happiness flowed through the air. There was an exuberant sense of calm that Nick had not felt since he was a young man training to become a Refect.

Nick turned around to find thousands upon thousands looking upon Nick on the hill. He could now see himself. He was wearing clothing made from gold. A long golden shirt stretched to his toes and he wore golden jewelry. In his hand he held a sword made from solid gold. It weighed heavy as he lifted it towards the sky. The thousands of people that stretched as far as the eye could see raised their hands with him.

Nick’s eyes opened to Dricos standing next to him by the bed. He was slightly startled, which made him wake up in no time. Dricos was eager to hear of Nick’s experiences within the dragons’ lair and the events of flying with the dragon. So he talked her through every last detail. Her eyes widened and a smile glistened on her face as he told her the story. She commented that it was quite normal for one or a few dragons for that matter to try to attack the dragon born’s newly found dragon. She guessed that it stemmed from some sort of jealousy or inferiority complex.

Nick knew that he had completed his mission at the dragons’ lair. He could not deny that fate was having a huge impact on him and he simply had to let it play its course as the days went on. He knew where he really had to be. He had to go back to camp and then go to Terrel to talk to Lord Senvot. Having a dragon would possibly be a strong point in terms of convincing their great leader to allow the camp access within his city’s walls. He had one question that still occupied his mind that he had to ask before he left Dricos.

“I know several supreme Reza’s, or dragon born, as you call them,” said Nick. “If I can get them here to the dragons’ lair, will they find their dragon?”

“Of course they will,” she said. “They will find their dragon, so long as their dragon has not died. But don’t put that thought into their minds. It is highly unlikely. Bring them here and I’ll gladly welcome them. I sense that you and your party have great purpose in the war that is coming.”

“How do you know of the war?” asked Nick.

“The dragons know of the war, so I do as well,” she said. “Bring them here, Nick Bint. The dragons will play their part as you and your party play their part.”

“How will I find my way back?” asked Nick.

“When you are in the sky you will understand the landmarks,” she said. “You will understand the way the land works. The curves, the humps, the rivers, and the sea. From the heavens you can see it all. From the heavens is where you will always find your way. Follow your heart and don’t second-guess yourself. You will always find what it is that you are looking for from up above.”

“I will,” said Nick. “How should I find my dragon? Will it always be where I leave it?”

“Dragons have minds of their own,” she said. “If they wish to fly off they will. Through my own experiences they will stay put for a good while. When you desperately need them they will feel it in their hearts and seek you out.”

“I understand,” said Nick. “They must hunt, eat, and sleep as we do. Is there any other means of communicating with the dragon?”

“Communication varies from case to case,” said Dricos. “You will learn how to communicate in time. However, there are a few more commands that are universally understood by all dragons. The tongue in which these commands have worked have been through the tests of time. The founders of the land used them and dragon born have not looked past since.”

“What else can I command?” asked Nick.

“Always remember the dragon is an extension of yourself,” she said. “Fitoro means breath fire. Lithicos means breath ice. Dentorth means kill. And now into terms for flying. Quen means slow down. Alazo means fly faster. Tolt means hover in the same place. Jaj means fly up. Pon means fly down. Vez means turn left. Finally, kez means turn right. Those, along with the four I already taught you, are all of the commands that dragons naturally understand.”

“Thank you for all of your help,” said Nick. “You are a blessing in a time of curses.”

“One final advice I give to you,” said Dricos. “Name your dragon. He will learn it and respond to it.”

Nick nodded his head in agreement and took his leave. He walked out into the daylight. He could see that the sun had just begun to set as the clouds up above changed into an orange hue of colors. He walked along the shadow of the dragons’ lair to where his dragon was staying. Sure enough, the white dragon was still in the same area, resting on its side. The dragons that dominated the sky above the dragons’ lair were all but gone. There was now an essence of peace and calm where there was once chaos and terror. The white dragon noticed Nick walking towards it and got up and stretched its body. Nick was still amazed at how beautiful, yet massive, the dragon was. He felt like an ant next to a mountain. Intimidating was an understatement.

The white dragon lowered its body to the ground so that Nick could climb on top of its back once again. Nick got onto its right wing and the dragon lifted it so that Nick could hoist himself up.

He got himself situated to his seated position and said, “Silner.”

They flew into the sky and Nick commanded the dragon to fly towards the mountains in the distance. He knew that he was in the north, somewhere in Terrel. In the distance he could see a mountain range that stretched from coast to coast. That’s where his camp was, that is where his family was. He directed the dragon to fly in the direction he considered home.

Jeffrey stood before the thousands in front of him. Losing a comrade was never easy. Losing a brother was almost impossible to bear. Not only did the king’s men lose one of their own, the camp had lost innocent lives as well. Three Reza had lost their lives while trying to defeat the onslaught of the three detath.

The king’s men had buried their dead. The camp gathered around to say their respects, to say good-bye to those that gave their lives so that they could still be alive.

Jeffrey looked around at the crowd. Some bowed their heads while others were sobbing uncontrollably. Others looked at Jeffrey and waited for him to make his remarks. He held back tears as he began his speech.

“Yesterday we faced the harsh realities of war,” said Jeffrey. “Whether or not we were fighting the real enemy yesterday, it does not matter. The real enemy played their cards and we played right into them. As a result we face nature and the beasts that are birthed from it. That was part of our enemy’s plan, there is no doubt.”
