CHAPTER THIRTY

“Has
the jury reached a decision?”

“We have, Your Honor.”

Each count that the judge read aloud was
followed by a guilty verdict. Two hundred thousand counts of attempted murder,
200,000 counts of conspiracy to commit murder, 200,000 counts of aggravated
assault, 23 counts of capital murder, and 1,200 counts of murder in the first
degree as well as a slew of additional charges. One verdict of guilty for each
of the 50 charges brought against both Adam, Jr. and Thompson.

Cheers could be heard all around the
world. Those that were spared death were finally free to live out their lives
and those that lost their lives would never be forgotten.

Because of the severity of the charges
brought against both men, it was a guarantee that they would never see the
light of day again. Whether they were sentenced to death or thousands of years,
they would never walk the streets as free men.

There was a big celebration held in
honor of all involved with the investigation, capture and conviction. Medals
were given to Drew and Max and Sr. was given a special award and citation for
his cooperation and expert help in the case. It was hard for Sr. to celebrate,
but knowing that he was accepted and not shunned for being the father of Adam
helped him to move on with his life.

While dinner was being served, Sr.
informed Max and Drew that his ex-wife’s tumor had begun to shrink and they
suspect that the chip had something to do with it. Once she has stabilized, the
chip will be deactivated and she should live for many years to come. That was a
huge relief to them all.

When the banquet was winding down, Drew
and Max decided to make an exit. They had plans that they needed to prepare
for. In the time during the trial, Max resigned from teaching, sold her house
and moved in with Drew. First thing in the morning they will be on a flight for
a much needed vacation.

The photographer was gathering people
together for a family picture. As Max and Drew stood off to the side watching
both sides of the family come together, they laughed. How they convinced 47
people to fly halfway around the world to Ireland was a mystery to them, but it
happened. The photographer motioned for the bride and groom to take their place
in the center of the group and smiled.

“What an amazing family you make!” The
snap of the camera would hold this moment in time for all to remember.

***

After a week in Ireland with their
families, Max and Drew were off for a more tropical honeymoon. As they stepped
off the tiny airplane floating next to the dock, they felt like they were on an
episode of Fantasy Island. Their bags would be brought to their private
“Honeymoon Hut” that stood on stilts over the clear blue water of the ocean
cove. As they walked up the long and lazy bridge to their hut, they breathed in
the fragrance of the tropical flowers that were everywhere.

Inside, they were greeted by a bottle of
champagne and a note that read, “Enjoy Paradise. The two of you deserve it! The
Office.” There was a post script that read, “Drew, talk that woman into making
it official here. We could use another good-guy on our side!”

“I don’t want to think about that right
now. I just want to enjoy you and this perfect place. There will be time enough
to think about work when we get back to the states.” Max said with a chuckle in
her voice.

Like the other island visitors, they
headed to the Tiki Bar on the beach.

“What’ll you have, lovebirds?”

“Anything fruity with an umbrella for
me!” Max was so excited and beaming ear to ear.

“Make that two anything fruity with
umbrellas, please.” Drew was just as happy and excited to be in this tropical
paradise with his new bride.

As they carried their drinks toward a
pair of chairs in the sand they heard the lady behind the bar speak, “Oh, I
almost forgot, we’re having a raffle for a free private dinner on…” Instantly
she was interrupted.

“No!” Both Drew and Max shouted at the
same time and then laughed. They agreed at that point never to enter another
raffle for as long as they lived.
