“You’re here, because I have no one else to talk with about this. You’re the only one that knows what really happened, besides Olivia.”
“NO,” Felisha cut in. “I’m here, because you need a shoulder to cry on. I’m here, because I’m your son’s mother, and if you can’t trust nobody, you know you can trust me. You’re in denial if you think I don’t know you fight these feelings for me. Just as much as I lay in bed at night thinking of you, you’re doing the same thing. Don’t patronize me, nigga.”
Mark simply looked at her, because he could definitely recall moments when he’d lay in bed and think about her. The sad thing was that he didn’t love her like she felt he should’ve, though. What they had was the past. He only wanted to be able to be there for Lil Romeo and make things half way decent for his son. Felisha was sweet, but very devious. She wanted the baby by him. Even when he offered her the money to have an abortion, she refused to do it. In her mind, if she couldn’t have him then she’d have a piece of him through their child.
“Why do you keep denying feelings for me?”
Mark just looked at her. She was pitifully in love with him and he couldn’t stand it. “I’m not denying any feelings for you. I JUST DON’T LOVE YOU!” His voice raised out of frustration. “You and I could never be together. I’m married to your best friend.”
“Ex-best friend,” Felisha interjected.
“You act like this doesn’t bother you. Like you’re not the least bit concerned about your friendship, your business, your kid. She is like a second mother to him. You’re putting everything that’s important to the side for me.” He shook his head as he stood up. “For this dick,” he simply stated. “Dick, that shouldn’t even be as heavy on your mind, being that you rarely ever get it.”
“So, you’re saying that you wouldn’t be interested if it wasn’t for Olivia?”
“I’m saying that I just don’t want you like that. You’ve only been good to me since I’ve known you, but I just don’t see myself being with you. I’m married to a woman that I love. I know I fucked up by sleeping with you. I know that things were fucked up from the start, but we chose to ride with it. You have to understand where I’m coming from. I want my wife and I want to fight for her.”
Felisha rolled her eyes a bit. “How do you think she’ll feel if she knew about Lil Romeo?”
“If she doesn’t know by now, then why would you break her heart like that? She is already damaged.”
“She’s gonna find out someday?” Felisha said like she was going to tell it.
“If Olivia found out about Lil Romeo today or tomorrow, I’ll still never be with you. Too much time has passed, feelings have definitely changed. You have got to let this fantasy of us being together, go. We will never be an item.”
“What if Olivia wasn’t the woman that you thought she was?” she asked, wanting so bad to reveal that Olivia had given up the goods to Zay.
“It doesn’t matter who she is, Felisha. I still could never be with you. I’ll always take care of Lil Romeo, but I will never be with you.”
Felisha’s eyes filled with water. She was hurt. She loved Mark without a doubt, but she was tired of being a fool for him. Maybe it was over. Maybe too much time had passed them by. Not knowing what else to do or say, she grabbed her purse off of the foot of the bed. She looked back once, after reaching the door to leave.
“I won’t come back this time. I’ll let you be and I hope that in due time you’ll get what you’re hoping for out of your marriage. I can’t believe that I’ve been a fool for so long.” And with that, she made her exit.
__________
The next morning, Zay woke up with his arm around Olivia’s waist. He was madly in love with her, but he was no fool. He knew that something was going on with her. She wasn’t out of the country on business and because she was alone, it told him that there was trouble in paradise.
Olivia moved a bit as she woke up out of a deep sleep. Instantly, she connected her fingers inside of Zay’s. She smiled just knowing that he was there with her. She felt the warmth from his lips kiss the back of her neck.
“Good morning,” he whispered.
“Good morning,” she said back then turned to face him.
“Last night was great.”
“It was,” Olivia agreed. “I didn’t realize how much I missed you.”
“Well, I realized it the day you left me.” He said, thinking back to how she chose her husband over him, but now it seemed she’d had a change of heart.
Olivia batted her Asian looking, slanted eyes. “I was foolish and wasn’t thinking straight. Plus, seeing Patrice and hearing her story definitely had me feeling some type of way.”
Zay shook his head, not even wanting to think about that Psycho path. She had certainly become a pain in his ass. “That girl is obsessed.”
“She is just not used to messing around with a man of your statue. Patrice is what they call a hood rat. She dresses very well and looks like she is of a higher class. I can’t lie, she is really cute. However, she lives in the projects and sleeps with mostly dope boys that can break her off right away. She just got her own car and she can’t keep a man. Every man she has had only uses her for what little bit she can offer.”
“And what’s that?” Zay asked, thinking that it couldn’t have been for the dry ass pussy she had.
“For one, they sell drugs out of her apartment and eat up her food with their homeboys like its cool. She has been waiting to hit the jackpot forever, and then you came along. JACKPOT,” Olivia said, letting him know that Patrice was just looking for an easy way out through him.
Zay hated that he’d allowed himself to go that far with Patrice. He had judged that book by the cover, but the inside pages spoke something much different.
“Don’t let the sophisticated look fool you,” Olivia said. “Don’t get me wrong, she is cool people, but she’s not your type.”
“I know,” Zay agreed. “I hate I even talk to her like that.”
Olivia lay there looking into Zay’s eyes. It bothered her that he’d slept with someone else, but it made her feel good to know that he was honest when confronted about it.
“How was it?” She blurted out, then looked ashamed like she hated she’d said it.
“It wasn’t good,” Zay admitted.
Olivia found herself grinning. “What you mean it wasn’t good? Was it bad?”
Zay shook his head, feeling quite tickled that she was that interested as she stared at him with a big smile on her face. “It was the kinda bad that I didn’t nut.”
Hearing those words caused Olivia much satisfaction. “You didn’t nut?” She asked like she couldn’t believe it.
Zay shook his head, no. “It lasted maybe six minutes give or take a minute or two.” He said, wanting to keep it as real as he could with her.
“Stop lying,” she said. “If it was like that, then why is she so delusional about y’all being in a relationship? You must’ve done something to turn her out.”
Zay leaned over and picked up his cell phone. “Let me show you something.” He scrolled through his text messages. He handed Olivia the phone and she started reading the text messages from Patrice.
What is your problem? Ms. Good P
Two minutes later…
Are you still ignoring me? Ms. Good P
An hour later…
I tried calling you. Why you’re not answering? Ms. Good P
The next day…
Xavier, I wish you would at least talk to me. Ms. Good P
Twenty minutes later…
I thought we clicked. What happened? Ms. Good P
Three days later…
Just thinking about you. Ms. Good P
Two days later…
Call me, please. We need to talk. Ms. Good P
A day later…
If I can hear you say that you don’t wanna be with me then I’ll move on. I just got to hear it from you. Ms. Good P
Olivia grew tired of reading all of Patrice’s desperate text messages. She handed the phone back to Zay. “Patrice is crazy isn’t she? And what’s up with the
Ms. Good P
signature. It couldn’t have been that good if you didn’t nut.” She smirked.
“I told you that she’s crazy. I hate I fucked with her. I don’t’ text back, ever and I definitely don’t call back, ever. I would’ve gotten my number changed by now, but I had no way of giving it to you since you’d gotten your number changed.”
“Yeah,” Olivia whispered as her eyes shyly looked away from his face. Speaking of changing her number refreshed her memory as to why she’d skipped the country and was now chilling with him.
He looked at her. He knew it was something wrong with her the minute he heard her voice. Brushing her hair back out of her face, he wondered if he should pry. Then after a few seconds of thought, it was now his turn to interrogate her. “What happened, babe?” Olivia didn’t respond as she continued to stare down at the white silk sheets on the King size bed. “Why’d you change your number? Was it me?”
“No,” Olivia finally spoke.
“Well, what happened? Why are you here alone? Talk to me,” he almost pleaded. “You can talk to me about it.”
“I know,” Olivia responded as she continued to contemplate if she should tell him what happened or not.
“Was it your husband? Did he do something to you?” Zay pondered.
Olivia sucked in her teeth. She didn’t really want to talk about it, but since Zay kept asking… “Yes, it was my husband.” She said, taking in a deep breath then blowing it out. “He cheated.” She confessed as Zay actually sat quietly, now contemplating his next move. Hearing this news could definitely be a HUGE game changer.
Chapter 7
About forty minutes later, Olivia was wiping her tears with the back of her hand. She was saddened all over again just explaining to Zay what had happened the morning she returned home to catch Mark at Felisha’s house. Zay reached out to hug her.
“I’m sorry you had to go through that,” he said. Olivia just rested her head on his loving chest. “Have you spoken to him since you’ve been here?”
Olivia shook her head, no.
“Does he even know that you’re here?”
Again, she shook her head, no.
“So, you just skipped town and didn’t even say a word to him?”
This time she shook her head, yes.
“Do you think that’s wise?” Zay asked, knowing that from the way she said things had gone down that she wasn’t in her right mind. Even him being there probably wasn’t the best idea in the world, but he’d rather be the one to console her than anyone else. He didn’t have a clue that things had escalated that fast in so little time. It actually shocked him. He knew that Mark had fucked up, but not with the best friend. Best friends of a man’s ol’ lady wore imaginary signs around their neck that only the husbands or boyfriends could see that read, Hands Off!
“It’s gonna be okay.” Zay comforted her while softly rubbing on her back.
“I don’t know what to do?” She said, feeling lost for a moment. “He says that it only happened once.”
“Do you believe that?”
Olivia sat up and stared in Zay’s loving face. “I don’t know what to believe.”
“Do you want to stay in your marriage?” Zay asked, trying to figure out where he fit at in all of this.
Olivia just stared at him in silence, because she didn’t know.
“I don’t mind being here to console you, but you honestly needed this time to get yourself together.”
Olivia nodded while agreeing. “I just needed you. Involving you is the last thing that I wanted to do. You gotta know that.” She sincerely said, continuing to wipe her tears. Zay could tell that she was hurt as he listened to her pour her heart out to him.
“Look, I love you. I can’t lie about that. You bring me happiness and there is no doubt that you’d make me happy, but I can’t forget about my obligations. Please don’t take that the wrong way.”
“I’m not,” Zay said, feeling appreciative that she’d broken down her feelings so he’d further know where he stood.
“I was no saint. So how could I put all the blame on him?” She said, feeling bad now that she was thinking back. “A part of me wants to leave him and just be with you.”
“But, a part of you feels like you may owe him a second chance, because you’ve been unfaithful yourself?”
“I don’t know,” she said, feeling confused. “I want you. I do, but it’s so complicated. I don’t question my love for you, though. I’m just caught up in a crazy situation and it hurts either way I look at it. If I choose to stay with you then I turn my back on an eight year marriage that I’ve unhappily stayed in due to my vows. Vows aren’t something that I take lightly. I know I’m not a saint, but now I’m finding out that neither is he. Maybe we both just needed a wakeup call.” Zay wanted to believe her, but he couldn’t put all of his trust in her. She’d already showed him that she’d run back to her husband and the way she was talking suggested that she was going to do it again.
“Maybe y’all did.” He agreed, and at that moment he got out of the bed with nothing but a pair of white, loose linen pants on. He headed into the bathroom to wash up. Olivia had his mind fucked up and he had to snap out of it. He’d traveled over 1300 miles to see her and now she was talking about her cheating ass husband. Zay was certainly feeling some type of way as he turned on the sink water and wet his wash cloth with hot water. All he wanted to do was lay it on his face in hopes of processing Olivia’s troubled woes without losing it. What he really wanted to tell her was to leave that cheating ass bastard and move to Atlanta with him, but that was definitely easier said than done.
He glanced around the bathroom door to see her sitting there, looking sad and confused. He felt bad for her. He’d known about the way they grew up. Even though her parent’s spoiled her, living with them wasn’t easy. To someone looking in, her life seemed perfect, but emotionally she’d definitely gone through some things. This only caused him to feel worse for her, but he also had to think about himself and his feelings. As he stood there in the bathroom mirror looking at his handsome reflection, he decided that it was time to play things his way and on his terms. Olivia was either going to realize that he was the one for her or she was going to miss out on a good thing fucking around with someone that he felt was definitely toxic for her.
