“Why haven’t you shared that fact with us, before now?”

“You don’t share every human discourse with us, either. By treaty, as far as Ever-Life knew, we were completely responsible for rehabilitating Marion Brock. You are to be notified, only if the rehabilitation is successful. If it is not, we would disposition Mr. Brock. After the girl clone died, we didn’t hear from Semitri. We never knew what happened to Brock. We had no contact. Only through working with the new GGM, within the last 24 hours, did we confirmed the breech in the Sidron; and, only within the last hour, have we recorded unexplained signal waves from Carrier 2211”

“How did you receive signals only now?”

“He acquired ability to time travel .Our kind gives off special signals, when we do so.”

“My God, this video shows so much detail of the murders.  I could have used this that day. How do you get the camera angles?”

“Everything within a Carrier is recorded from all angles. It’s standard procedure for us. By treaty, we give all pertinent inputs to GGM for processing.”

“Holy crap, no wonder Gordon knew everything. We could use that for judicial purposes on the surface… Well, first things first then. I have to find a man named Hamil Stevens. His last location was the Oregon Particle Acceleration Sciences lab-O.P.A.S., in Seattle Washington. We think he may have caused the Sidron breach. How fast can you get me there?”

“Twenty-six minutes, twenty-two seconds.”

“Meantime, do you have a history file on him; and, please play everything you have on Brock, too.”

“Displaying now, Sir.”

Burns sat, watching and comprehending all he saw; while, at the same time, he wore an earplug and listened to various Knofer inputs, regarding many Ever-Life security matters.

Chapter 18

The Father’s Trip

ospital
At precisely 8 a. m., the three Fathers met in Kristos’s room within Bello’s office suite; and then, they all walked back into GGM ‘s private lab. As they stepped through the door, they also walked through a film like membrane that had no substance. It was more like the light of a security system. Once through it, they felt invigorated somehow.

“Dr. Bellos,” James called out.

All three scanned the room and began examining different things.

“It looks different in here somehow,” Ahmir said, “more subdued. The colors seem to have a silvery tint or shade? My friends, we are in strange quarters.  That, light or, whatever it is, seems to have changed the look of everything.

“We are inside a balloon of some sort?” Kristos said. “It looks like it’s pushing outward over everything, but not moving anything.”

Then, they all fixed on the sculpture in the far corner. It was a floor to ceiling glowing fishlike statue.

“Ok,” James said, “what is that? It looks wet.”

“It’s glowing.”

The statue seated on what looked like long tentacles, protruding from its bottom. Each shaped into an upright lounge chair.

There was a pop, and Mathew Bellos entered the lab.

“Good morning gentlemen. I brought traveling supplies.”

Bellos reached in his bag and took out an extraction syringe and three Knofers.

“What do you mean?” Ahmir asked.

“First, here; these are hand held computers; sort of. They can answer any questions, if we get separated. Please look into the red spot, on the front…That’s it…Now, you are securely linked to our time period. And, each one has a defense mode, which would kick in, as a failsafe, if there is a threat.”

“What do you mean?” James asked

“Please, think clearly,” said Bellos.

“Sorry; what?” asked Kristos.

“Those little ‘units’ run on pure knowledge; and, each is now programmed to your individual thoughts. In some cases, emotions can over ride thoughts, as you know. Therefore it is important to try to focus; concentrate, if you have a problem. Don’t let your emotions cloud your thinking. That is what ‘S’ was trying to tell you…Anyway, if defense mode does kick in, the little unit there should read your imprint, and the Carrier will return you to itself.”

“I see,” said Kristos, a bit confused.

“Bellos continued, “Also, pay attention. In this syringe is an immunity shot to protect you against viral or bacterial infections of the time. The delivery system is just a shot of air.”

Bellos took each syringe and injected the contents into the right wrist of each man.

“Lastly, here is a canteen, for each of you.”

“Okay,” James took his and remarked, “It looks like a baby bottle. Apparently, we are not going to be gone long.”

Bellos smiled.

“It doesn’t need refilling. It won’t run out. It’s pretty nifty.”

“Nifty?” James giggled.

“Sorry, I’m a lover of ancient clichés. And it’s not filled with water. That is your wine….”

“Wine? The stuff we drank?” Kristos asked.

“It will feed us, and quench our thirst. Unfortunately, we cannot eat solid food, on the journey. Remember; this is very important. No matter what; do not eat anything solid; even if you are so tempted, by look or fragrance. It would be very bad. It’s a rule, which you must not break.”

“So, Doctor. This little phone thingy; you call it a unit?”

“Actually, we call it a Knofer,”

“Okay, Knofer you say; it will protect us, and bring us back, in case of an emergency…And this little bottle of wine will nourish and sustain us throughout the trip…We don’t need any food and we are safe from harm?”

“Yes,” Bellos smiled. “One more thing; please place this on your right underarms.

“It looks like a quarter.”

“It is self adhesive; and, you won’t feel it. It records body functions while you travel.”

Then, the doctor looked at the statue; and the three fathers turned, and saw it begin to change.

“…And may we ask, Doctor. What exactly is that?”

“That, my friends, is our ride.”

“What is it,” asked Ahmir.

“Actually, it’s not an it; she is a ‘time controller’.”

“I’m afraid you have us at a complete loss.” Kristos said.

“There are many new things, which you will experience with me today.  She is one of a species, wholives within our planet, unknown to the surface population.”

“Praise be to Allah,” Ahmir whispered.

“Dr. Bellos.” James raised an eyebrow. “How are we able to travel in time?”

“Come; this way;” Bellos extended his arm, pointing toward the Carrier, “please position yourselves around her, and lean back onto her arms. She could explain it, much better, if she chose to; but, summarily; the Earth’s core has an ocean of molten magma rotating around it. That flowing ocean creates the magnetic field around the planet. The field surrounds us all, and holds us all within it. Think of gravity, if that helps… By harnessing that energy, and focusing it, in a certain way; she creates a time vibration, a frequency. Then, she can ride the frequency wave, like a surfer on a surfboard, to almost any event in time. But, there is a catch. Once ‘you’ have been to that time and stayed, for whatever period, you can never duplicate the trip again. The duplication, in frequency vibrations, would cause your cells to confuse, and divide, to accommodate the two timelines you had visited. Unfortunately, the result is that each of your cells would separate from itself, break apart, disintegrate. You would become cell dust.”

“Well,” Kristos added, “we don’t want to be cell dust, do we?”

“Good, now does anyone have to do anything before we start?”

The three nodded no, with thankful smiles. Bellos turned his complete attention to the Carrier Statue; and then, he bowed, respectfully to it. He began speaking out loud, in the Carrier’s language, “Dear Sister; in the name of ‘Time Trust Treaty 81114, we ask that you take us in safety and peace…Our respect and admiration, always.”

“Do you recognize the speech, Kristos?”

“No James, it’s nothing I’ve ever heard or studied.”

              “Nor I…” said Ahmir.

“It’s not Latin, Greek, Hebrew or Aramaic,” said Kristos. “Could it be some derivation, or of Coptic origin?”

As Bellos finished, they all spoke at once; and Bellos raised his hands.

“It’s a combination of many languages really. You three remember the Tower of Babel story, right? Everyone spoke the same, until God scrambled their languages. Well, think of it there the original native tongue…”

The three Fathers did a double take.

“…And remember; we humans have different vocal capabilities now. We could never duplicate the original tones.”

“Kristos rolled his eyes. The Carrier began to hiss. Slowly, she changed, appearing transparent, pliable and wet. Her cloudy glow became brighter. The men leaned back onto the cushiony tentacles, as the ugly octopus arms wrapped around them.

“Surprisingly comfortable…” James said nervously.

“Don’t be alarmed”

“Excuse me Doctor, if we knew what was happening, we wouldn’t be so anxious.”

“She is beginning her search for the right frequency.”

The membrane inside the room began to shrink, tighten and pull away from the walls and furniture, toward her. It was turning into a bubble outer layer. The four tentacles’ lounges began to rotate, in a counter clockwise rotation. From the apex of the creature, above them, the tongue was flailing; and, it generated short snapping sounds. Ever so slightly, everything in the office spun faster. After a moment it all seemed to move from side to side; and, everything became completely quiet.

“So Doctor,” James said, “what is happening now?”

“She is has started the vibration. See how things seem to move quicker and quicker. As the vibration increases, the bubble around us will change. It will seem like all has stopped. Watch it when the bubble become shiny…There is absolutely no threat to you. It’s just vibrating even faster. She’s searching for the right wave. Soon after that, you all will sense a feeling of euphoria and drift into a very light foggy trance…It’s hard to explain, before you experience it. Take deep breaths and try to relax, as much as you can.”

“But how can we travel anywhere?” asked Ahmir.

Bellos was sensitive to their tension.

“Actually, It’s to any ‘when’. As I said, the Carrier is searching for a certain frequency. All life, time and space exist at a particular frequency of existence. She will find the frequency of existence of that time we chose, within the bubble, you see. When she finds it, we go. The bubble can only exist, if we all stay at a certain level of comfort, though. The less you know, in this case, the more apt you are to stay within the correct comfort range. The coins you wear tell her that you are all okay; so, she can trigger the next phase, providing our monitors approve your vital signs. The process will move much faster, if you try to relax.”

The three Fathers nodded and watched the balloon bubble constrict.

“My goodness, it is quite something,” Kristos said. “But there is no sense of movement.”

“This will be like nothing you have ever experienced before. And yet, it will be just another moment in your day. The trip should cause no pain. We will be able to move, as we do normally. Have no fear, gentlemen. We will be fine.”

The three were mesmerized. The bubble was turning opaque. She sound of her tongue snapping stopped but the flashes of light still sparkled, as it circled in a wisplike manner. Her body began to rotate slowly in clockwise movement, opposite of the rotating travelers. Within seconds, she was spinning so fast, no one could distinguish any markings.
