“Yes, baby,” Jeremy said.

This time he came up to meet her a little harder as she pushed down. She swallowed him up full, and then she pulled up again, her pussy already aching for more as he left her wet channel. She pulled up to the tip and then crashed down again, their bodies finding a rhythm. Jeremy grasped her sensitive breasts more tightly, kneading her hard buds between his thumbs and fingers and she arched her back, letting her neck fall back, her long dark locks swaying behind her.

“Give it to me, baby. Give me everything you’ve got.”

“Yes, Jeremy. Yes.”

She dropped down on him and he thrust to meet her halfway. Harder, deeper.

“I want to mark you,” he said.

“Mark me?”

“I want to make you mine.”

“Now?”

“Forever.”

As she continued to grind down on him, she felt the tension welling within her core. Building. Growing tauter and tighter, more desperate.

Mark me? What does he mean by that?

She didn’t care. No, yes she did. There was too much happening, too much going on in her life right now to be marked. At least not right now, not until she knew what it meant…

“Can we wait?”

“Of course,” Jeremy growled.

They thrust to meet each other, and each time her pussy met the base of his cock, Bailey’s insides were wound tighter still. Then, Jeremy released her breasts and moved his hands up to her shoulders. He flexed upward as he pulled her down. The tension inside her grew too much to bear. Bailey knew she had been wound up to her breaking point. When she pulled up again, she was on the brink of release, and when Jeremy pulled her back down, thrusting inside of her, the wave of tension she had been holding back finally broke loose.

The dam didn’t just break, it exploded. Every ounce of tension that had welled within her let go in a single orgasmic burst. She came around his cock, and she knew he was coming, too. She could feel his hard shaft pulse inside of her. The waves of pleasure burst forth in a never-ending swell, radiating out from her in a liquefying force like an explosion of passion. Like pure unadulterated joy. Bailey continued to bob atop him, but now her every movement felt like she was surfing—surfing the wave that was Jeremy. Surfing the pleasure within her like it would never subside. As though it would radiate from deep within her forever.

“Tell me you feel it.”

“I feel it.”

“That’s the feeling of you and me.”

“Yes, Jeremy.”

“You’re my mate and I’ll never let you go. Do you hear me? Never.”

“Do you promise?” Bailey whimpered.

“I do.”

He pulled her down, and this time, instead of thrusting, he bent her all the way down to his chest, reaching up to kiss her lips, his cock still pulsing deep within her. Everything was liquid in her now. Everything was right. Everything was exactly as it was meant to be.

************************

Jeremy felt like a new man. He felt ready to take on the world, ready to conquer it. He treasured this brave woman and knew deep within his soul that there could be no other. Jeremy’s bear had spoken. Bailey was his mate. She felt so soft atop him, so full of life, so ready and capable. All he wanted to do was to protect her, to make everything in her world right. He never wanted to be apart from her again.

“Jeremy,” Bailey said softy, her head on his chest.

“Yes, babe.”

“I have to go now.”

“Don’t worry, the shop’s closed. Nobody’s coming.”

“You don’t understand. I have to go. I have to leave town. I can’t come back.”

“What are you taking about, Bailey?”

“The Petronis.”

“Let me handle the Petronis.”

She looked him in the eye. “You may be a bear, but they’re monsters.”

“And you’re not leaving town. Not for them. Not for anyone. Like I said, I’ll handle the Petronis.”

Jeremy gently raised Bailey’s hips above him and slid out from underneath her. Then he gathered her clothes and offered them to her. Jeremy didn’t want her to feel dirty or alone, lying there in the corner of the garage. That was the last thing he wanted for her. Especially under the terrible stress she must be feeling. He excused himself to go to the washroom, where he removed the condom and threw his coveralls back on. When he came back with a warm wet cloth to wipe Bailey down, she was already dressed like she was ready to leave. He took her hand.

“Tell me about the Petronis, Bailey. Tell me what they did to you.”

She looked so soft, so vulnerable. “There isn’t time for that anymore, and like I said, I have to go.”

Jeremy took her other hand and brought her near. He knew that he had to be careful. Because his bear had decided that Bailey was the one, the stakes were higher than ever. He had to convince her that she was his. But it wouldn’t be easy. Not with the Petronis hunting her down. And not with the Petronis looking for him as well. He needed to end the threat once and for all.

“Bailey, baby. Please listen to me. I’m going to deal with the Petronis. I’m going to deal with them so that you never, ever, have to fear them again. But I need to know what they did to you. I need to know everything so that I know what I’m facing.”

Bailey looked around the garage. “Bring me someplace safe. Then we’ll talk.”

Chapter Six

Jeremy drove Bailey’s car inside the garage. Then he finished repairing the Porsche and lowered it from the hoist. It wasn’t exactly a common car, but the Petronis wouldn’t be able to identify them in it. He didn’t pester Bailey with questions but gave her time to get comfortable. Eventually, as they drove the winding road up to the Lodge, she opened up.

“I had a boyfriend at the time, this was four years ago, and I knew he was involved in some bad things. Some things he shouldn’t have been involved in.”

“What kind of things?”

“When the Petronis were involved he never told me everything, but that’s the way it is on the South Side, right? All the boys are involved in something.”

Jeremy nodded. He wanted her to feel comfortable enough to tell him everything. No judgment. After all, he knew exactly what she was talking about. He had grown up on the South Side.

“One day Max, that was his name, said he needed my help. He asked me to deliver a briefcase for him.”

Jeremy sighed inwardly. He didn’t know who this Max guy was, but he could already tell he was a jerk. To get Bailey involved in any kind of intrigue with the likes of the Petronis was more than criminal, it was cowardly. And Jeremy despised cowards. If Bailey was his woman, he would put her on a pedestal. He would do everything his mate desired. And he would never, ever involve her in untoward business. He would rather be flayed alive than do that. It wasn’t how you treated a lady.

“So I went out to this liquor store thinking I was just giving him something he’d forgotten.”

Bailey paused. Jeremy could tell this was difficult for her. He downshifted on the tight corner and placed a reassuring hand on her knee.

Even her kneecaps are beautiful,
he thought. She took his hand warmly in his. As they interlaced their fingers, Jeremy felt his heart swell. He would do everything in the world to protect this woman. He would do it even if it killed him.

“But when I drove into the parking lot at the liquor store, I could just feel that things weren’t right. Max’s car was there, but there was no Max. Then, I heard shots and he came running out. He yelled at me to start the car and I did.”

Bailey stopped. Jeremy didn’t want to ask what happened next. But he knew he needed to know everything. Bailey opened her mouth again, but this time her voice had dropped to a whisper.

“They gunned him down in front of me.”

“I’m so sorry, Bailey,” Jeremy said. And he meant it.

“Max lied to me. He said he’d just forgotten something. But that wasn’t it. The thing he asked me to bring, it was a delivery. Something he was too afraid to bring himself. I looked the Petronis right in the eyes when they did it. And after that, I knew one thing. I knew it with every fiber of my being.”

“What?”

Bailey looked him in the eyes. “I can’t stand lies, Jeremy. I can’t stand lies and the filthy liars who tell them. Promise me you’ll never lie to me,” she said.

“I promise,” Jeremy said, and he felt terrible saying it. But at least part of it was true. Once this business with the Petronis was concluded, he would never lie to her again. He just needed to get the Petronis out of their lives.

“After they shot Max, I drove. I drove faster than I’ve ever driven in my life. I left town. I left everything. But I know they’re still looking for me.”

“Why?” Jeremy asked.

“Because of this.”

Bailey reached into the back seat of the Porsche and produced a brown leather briefcase.

************************

Bailey felt enormous relief at finally sharing her story. She had kept it to herself for so long that she had no idea of the burden she had been carrying. Telling Jeremy was like having that weight suddenly lifted. He made her feel comfortable and free of care, like he would put everything right.

Jeremy brought her to one of the three log guesthouses on his father’s estate. She knew that Jada and Brandon were living in one of the guesthouses, but she didn’t feel much like visiting right then. She felt like ensconcing herself in a cocoon. She felt like coming out again when the harsh winter of her past was behind her and she was able to spread her wings into the new spring. But for that to happen she needed to trust Jeremy. That was why, when he had asked her for the briefcase, she had given it to him.

She didn’t know why she had held onto the thing for so long, anyhow. She had never opened it. She wanted nothing to do with it. But something told her not to destroy it, either. No, instead it had stood in her closet like an omen for these past four years. She hoped that after giving it to Jeremy she would never have to lay eyes on it again. She hoped that he could solve her problem.

He asked her to wait for him in the cabin. She wasn’t to call anyone or let anyone in or otherwise let anybody know where she was. He asked her not to do anything except try to relax. Bailey agreed. There was food in the fridge and a fire in the hearth. He kissed her on the forehead and told her he would be back soon.

But left to herself in the cabin, Bailey found her mind wandering. What did soon mean? Jeremy hadn’t given her a phone number to call him at. He hadn’t given her anything but a promise. And who was he exactly? Sure, he was Brandon’s half-brother, he was the man she had made mad love with, not once, but twice that day, but who was he, really? He was a bear shifter for one thing. That was definitely outside the realm of normal, but it was something that she might be able to get used to. It was the other part of his life that concerned her. He seemed awfully confident about dealing with the Petronis for someone who knew them only by reputation.

Calm down, Bailey. Breathe.

She stopped pacing around the living area of the cabin and sat on the couch. What was she thinking? She had only known him for a day. But she had strong feelings for him. Very strong feelings. Not to mention the fact that he was sexy as all hell. He had taken a great risk for her. He was going to meet the Petronis on her behalf.

But he also took the briefcase.

Bailey stood up and started pacing again. What had she done? Could she trust him? Her mind kept going back to the coincidence of it all. The Petronis showed up practically as soon as she met him. How could she know he hadn’t been sent to steal the case from her? No, that couldn’t be true. Not Jeremy. He didn’t have it in him. But the timing, it was too perfect. Jeremy shows up, followed by the Petronis. Then she gives him the case. Was she nuts?

Bailey, get hold of yourself.

The phone rang. Her phone. But she didn’t recognize the number.

Don’t talk to anybody.

She let it go to voicemail. Then she heard a knock on the door.

Wow. When it rained it poured. Could be Jada,
she thought.

Don’t let anyone in.

Bailey grabbed the heavy iron fire poker just to be safe. Then she went to the window, peering out to see if she could see who was at the door. Whoever was there was standing too close to the building to be seen.

“Who is it?” Bailey asked.

She suddenly felt a cool breeze at her back.

“It’s me.”

Bailey turned. And a black-gloved hand came down over her mouth.

************************

Bailey swung the poker, but the man behind her was too strong. He tore it from her hand while a second man entered through the front door. She recognized the second man as Vito Petroni, the leader of the crime family. She had seen his photo before but never his hard, scarred face. She felt something at her back. A gun.

“Sit down and don’t move,” the man behind her said.

“I’m Vito,” the leader said. “You might recognize me. You look a little flushed. Gianni, get the lady a glass of water.”

“Boss?”

“Get her the water.”

The driver of the green sedan, the one called Gianni, walked over to the kitchen sink. He kept his gun at his side, his finger on the trigger.

“Nice to finally meet you, little lady,” Vito said.

“Be careful who you call little lady.”

Vito laughed. “You want me to call you the fat chick? Supersize? Hey, Gianni, get Supersize a supersize cup of water.”

Gianni laughed.

“What do you want?” Bailey asked.

“Well, as you might have guessed, this is important, or I’d have had Gianni handle it on his own,” Vito said.

“Like I said, what do you want?”

“Oh, I think you know what we want, Supersize.”

“What I think is you got it already. Jeremy gave it to you. Now leave me alone before something happens you’re going to regret.”

Vito laughed again. “Like what?”

“Like Jeremy. That’s what.”

“Oh, boy. This is just sad.”

Bailey felt her heart drop. What did he mean, “Sad?”

“You don’t get it, do you?”

Bailey didn’t say anything.

“You think your boyfriend is going to come riding in to your rescue?”
