Epilogue

The crowd is going insane and I’m so worried that she’s going to freak out. I’ve seen enough of her nightmares and flashbacks to know what she can handle, and this is pushing it.

“You’re gonna be fine, Rose. Just get in there and remember everything I taught you.” I smack her ass and she walks into the ring, wide-eyed, but ready.

I’ve been training her for a few months now and she’s finally in her first big MMA fight. It took some time in the beginning to get her to open up to me, but now that she has, I’m ready to show her off to the world. This girl has some serious talent. Sure, she’s also got some serious issues, but who doesn’t anymore?

The lights in the crowd dim and the announcer announces the two fighters. My heartbeat is going insane and I see Eddie in the crowd, smiling back at me. This is my first big fight as a trainer, and as much as I’ve prepared her for it, I can’t help but be nervous for the poor girl. She was so confused and broken when she showed up on our doorstep, I can’t help but feel like there’s something out there she’s hiding from. Something or someone.

Either way, the bell dings and she’s on her opponent immediately. The other girl doesn’t even see it coming!

“Fuck yes! Go, Rose!” I hear Eddie scream from the front row.

He’s so into it, so attached to the sport, that he is slowly getting into fighting himself. Who knows if he will ever do anything about it, I’m just happy that he’s finally fully supportive of my career.

I watch Rose wail on this girl with the precision I’ve taught her. Different punch and kick combinations, different tactics to throw the other fighter off their game. When they fall to the floor I wince, but Rose doesn’t miss a beat. She wraps her legs around the other fighter’s waist, trapping one of her arms under her legs. Locking her ankles together, as long as Rose can hold the girl, she’s got this. She starts wailing on her while the other fighter struggles to get free and attack at the same time.

It’s no use.

My girl’s got her. The ref calls it and Rose wins in the first round of her first ever match. Son of a bitch, she’s harder than I thought she was.
