After their precarious little introduction, Sarah and Becca actually managed to become fast friends. Jeremy seemed a little nervous about it at first, but he warmed to the idea, quickly. He even confessed to Sarah that he was more diligent than ever about going to his AA meetings, but she didn't push for any details that he didn't openly share. She wanted to be as supportive as he needed her to be--nothing more and nothing less.

All in all, after their horrific night together, life for both of them got a lot better. For a while, Sarah had been convinced that she wasn't going to survive her first semester at college, but everything ended up working out for the best. She even managed to bring all of her grades up, despite spending so much time with Reagan while she recovered.

It didn't take long for Sarah and Jeremy to fall into a comfortable routine, together. Now that they understood how they felt about each other, and were able to be completely open and honest with each other, everything else just seemed to fall into place. The bond they shared grew stronger every day, until it was so powerful that neither of them could remember what life had been like before they were in each other's lives.

It wasn't until nearly two months after the accident, in the late weeks of November with the cold weather finally settling on the city, that they were put up against their first real hurdle.

"I don't think this is a very good idea," Jeremy said, giving her a concerned look.

She laughed, her face bright and beaming.

"You never think anything is a good idea. Would you just trust me?"

His lips pursed as he gave her a sideways look.

"I've managed things just fine, I don't see why anything needs to change."

"Because I can't always be around anytime you need me. You've got to be able to do this yourself."

He chewed his lip as he stared out the window at the building in front of them. A sign hanging above the entrance read
Department of Motor Vehicles
.

"Look, it'll be easy. You just go in and take the little test they give you, and they'll issue you a new license."

"But what about the accidents and everything? I'm sure they're going to have a record of it. They're going to laugh at me for even trying to get a new license."

She shook her head. "You said it yourself, the DA never pressed charges because they didn't have enough evidence." She nodded toward the building. "They're not even going to know about the accidents."

He chewed on his lip some more, giving her an uncertain look. She put a hand on his forearm, and squeezed it reassuringly.

"Just trust me, would you?" she said. "It's going to be fine...you'll see." Then the grin on her face spread even wider. "Besides, if you can't even brave the DMV to get your license here, how we ever going to make it to those museums all over Europe?"

Finally, his face broke into a smile and he nodded.

"What did I ever do to end up with someone like you?" he asked.

She leaned in close enough to whisper in his ear.

"You made me feel like the most special girl in the world."

A smile spread across his face, and he whispered something right back.

"That's because you are."
