Chapter 1 - Lola

The school gym has been transformed into an
autumn wonderland—well, as much as one can transform a gym on a
public school budget. There are cardboard maple trees, orange and
red streamers, Dollar Tree fall tablecloths on the scattering of
tables at the edge of the dance floor and even a disco ball.
There’s a DJ set up under one of the basketball hoops and loud Top
40 hits of the early 2000s are blaring over the speakers. The Fall
Formal is in full effect and I’m sharing my first high school slow
dance to Aerosmith’s “I Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” with Marshall
Kittredge, a super cute boy whom I’ve had a crush on since sixth
grade, but who never paid any attention to me until I emerged from
middle school stacked with a pair of D cups.

A lot of boys have started paying attention
to me lately, which doesn’t sit well with my best friend, James.
He’s three years older than me and we’ve been best buds since his
family moved into the house next door when I was in first grade.
James is popular, particularly with the ladies at school. He’s been
a huge flirt since he was about twelve and, by the time he turned
seventeen, he had bedded more girls than Colin Farrell. It’s no
surprise, he’s very good looking. He’s tall, standing well over six
feet, his body looks like it was chiseled by Michelangelo himself,
he’s got pouty lips, a square jaw, long, dark brown hair that he
usually wears pulled low in a messy bun, hazel-green eyes and a
smile that could bring a girl to her knees—literally. Everyone
makes over James. The girls practically swoon at their lockers when
he comes down the hallway and even the teachers are not immune to
his charm. He once got Mrs. Peterson to give him a passing grade in
Geography after a one-on-one “chat” with her in her office. Every
girl seems to have a lady boner for James, every girl but me, that
is. James and I have known each other too long and I feel like I’m
the only female in town who isn’t flinging her panties at him like
he’s a rock star.

I catch a glimpse of him out of the corner of
my eye and he doesn’t look happy. Marshall’s hands have drifted
from the small of my back to the top of my behind and they’re
inching ever closer to flat-out palming me. James is standing with
Kelsey Vaughn, the blonde, rich, frizzy-haired cheerleader he’s
been banging for the past few weeks. She’s yammering on about
something, most likely which member of N’Sync was the cutest or
some other completely mundane subject, but he’s ignoring her and
staring right at me. He’s not amused by Marshall’s over-amorous
hands and I can tell he’s getting progressively more pissed off
with each lyric.

James has always been so protective of me.
I’m petite and spent the majority of my childhood as a gawky nerd
who liked reading instead of spin the bottle, so kids tended to
pick on me. He was always like my bodyguard, telling off bullies
and occasionally beating up the kids who were mean to me. Once I
blossomed into a woman, as our health class politely terms puberty,
his protective nature kicked into high gear and he’d lecture me
about how I shouldn’t make out with this guy or how I shouldn’t let
that guy feel me up. It seems like I always have to hear some big
speech about not giving it up until I’m in love and not letting a
guy pressure me into doing more than I want to, but I usually just
roll my eyes and point out the hypocrisy of a guy who’s slept with
almost every girl in town telling me to stay chaste like I’m some
kind of Victorian lady.

The slow song ends and the speakers boom with
Juvenile’s “Back That Thang Up”, which the school administrators
have reluctantly agreed to allow at the dance. Marshall grabs my
hips and grinds on me suggestively. I like the attention and I feel
pretty smug that a boy wants to get close to me like this, so I
grind right back on him. He turns me so my back is to him and he
gets up really close and presses me back into his body. I can feel
a growing bulge in his pants and I’m strangely flattered. Marshall
is turned on by me. No boys are ever turned on by me, but this one
is. I feel like Kelsey Vaughn or Becky Callahan or one of the cute,
popular upperclassmen.

My revelry is short lived because there’s a
tap on my shoulder and Marshall immediately takes a step back from
me. At first, I assume it’s one of the dance chaperones coming to
tell us to take it down a notch, but it’s James. He shoots Marshall
a challenging look and then gives me a big hug. His arms wrap
around the waist of my silky, green dress and he lifts me off the
ground as he kisses my cheek. James is always very physically
affectionate with me, which I assume is because he’s used to being
very affectionate with girls in general, but this is a blatant
display of superiority. He’s showing Marshall that he’s the alpha
male in this situation and he’s trying to exude his ownership over
me. I roll my eyes. He’s so possessive of me sometimes.

The song ends and Alicia Keys’ “Fallin’”
comes out over the crowded gym. James holds out his hand and gives
me a sweet smile. A slow song. James is going to dance with me to a
slow song, which means that I’ll be getting the stink eye from
Kelsey and her brainless flock of followers the whole time. He’s
refused to dance with her at all tonight and I’m sure she’s mighty
pissed about that. I’m guessing she was hoping to show him off, to
pretend that she’d reformed this bad boy into another popular,
football-playing, Abercrombie-wearing douche bag like the rest of
the boys she hangs out with. Kelsey seems to think James is her
boyfriend, but she doesn’t understand that he’s nobody’s boyfriend.
He’s a free agent and he plays the field. There’s no telling which
girl he’ll be spending the night with on any given evening. If she
thinks dragging him to this dance will mean some kind of commitment
for their relationship, she’s sorely mistaken.

“Did you enjoy terrifying my date?” I ask
when James scoots in and starts dancing with me. I’m about a foot
shorter than him and, while the height difference is aided by my
heels, I still have to stand on my tip toes to rest my arms over
his shoulders.

“I did actually,” he grins at me. “I don’t
like guys putting their hands on you like that, Lola.”

“I know,” I giggle, shaking my head. “You’ve
got to chill out on that, James. Marshall was flirting with me, he
likes me.”

“Oh, I’m sure he likes you,” James chuckles.
“I’m sure he likes your ass and your tits too, and I’m not down
with that shit, Lo.”

I laugh. Oh, James! So overprotective.

“You don’t need some guy grabbing at you like
that, kid. You deserve more respect than he was giving you.” He
smiles sincerely before joking, “you’re a good girl, not just a
pair of perfect tits and a tight ass.”

I laugh loudly and then rest my head on his
shoulder when he leans down to hold me closer. Even if things
aren’t romantic between us, I do like being in James’ arms like
this. I’ve always found his embrace very calming and comforting. I
remember climbing into his sleeping bag to curl up with him after I
got scared during a camping trip when we were little kids. He’s
been my protector forever, so being around him just makes me feel
safe, I guess.

“So, how’s your cheerleader?” I ask, my
distaste towards Kelsey practically oozing out of every word.

“Bitchy,” he chuckles. “She’s been trying to
boss me around all night, trying to get me to dance with her and
hang out with her annoying friends.”

“That’s gotta be pretty awkward considering
you fucked Becky yesterday,” I smirk.

“Shush!” He chides me through laughter.
“Kelsey will turn this place into a war zone if she hears that
shit.”

“Why are you even bothering with Kelsey
anyway?” I roll my eyes. “She’s a bitch, James. She’s been a bitch
forever and she’ll continue to be a bitch for the rest of her
miserable life.”

“She is a total bitch, you’re right,” he
smiles, “but that girl is up for anything, Lo. She blew me in the
locker room, like, a half hour ago.”

I scrunch up my nose with disgust.

James laughs and gives me a sly smile. He’s
told me all the details of his many sexual escapades and I’ve never
even heard of some of the stuff he’s tried. The other day, he told
me he and Becky found her parents’ handcuffs and played a kinky
little game involving her blindfolded and cuffed to the bed while
he spanked her and took her via a cavity I had always assumed was
exit only. I’ve barely even kissed a boy and James is doing things
I’ve only ever seen on the internet.

“Kelsey’s probably gonna flip shit at me when
I get back there because I danced with you,” he shakes his head and
snickers. “She’s been trying to get me to dance with her this whole
time, but I’m not really feelin’ it.”

I chuckle and peek over his shoulder at
Kelsey. Just as I expected, she’s glaring at me like she wishes she
could telekinetically slam me through the wall.

“Oh yeah,” I nod to him, “she’s definitely
not pleased.”

“Eh,” he shrugs, “who gives a shit?”

He pulls me closer and rests his chin against
the side of my head as the song starts to conclude. I nearly forget
that we’re at a dance and I blush a little when I see several girls
shooting me similarly evil glances as James and I part.

“You gonna be around later tonight?” He
smiles.

“Yeah, why? You planning to come over?” I
reply.

“Yeah,” he nods. “I should be done with
Bitchy McGee over here by around one, maybe one-thirty.”

“Ok,” I smile, “just shine the flashlight in
my window and I’ll come unlock the basement door.”

“Sounds good,” he grins. He slides his hand
around the nape of my neck and pulls me in to touch his forehead to
mine. He’s done this to me before, but not usually in such a public
setting. “See you tonight, kid.”

I’m left feeling giggly and flushed. It’s
just James, but it’s also a boy slow dancing with me and giving me
a sweet, affectionate gesture right here in front of everyone.

Marshall timidly returns to me and I note
that he doesn’t let his hands wander past my hips for the rest of
the night.

Chapter 2 - James

Kelsey’s pissed. I knew she would be. She’s
been acting like a jealous bitch all night and it’s driving me
fuckin’ crazy. If she hadn’t just given me a blowjob, I would have
ditched her altogether. Lola’s more fun anyway and she doesn’t try
to transform me into some cookie-cutter boyfriend. Besides, I like
hanging out with her more anyway. For as much as I get laid, I
never have more fun than when I’m with the only girl I don’t have
sex with.

“Oh, so you can’t dance with me but you have
no problem dancing with some big-titted freshman?” Kelsey snaps
when I’m within earshot of her.

I roll my eyes. “Mellow out, Kels,” I say
calmly. “That ‘big-titted freshman’ is my best friend, so you need
to just calm your shit down.”

I don’t like her referring to Lola like that,
but I chalk that up to just another thing that annoys me about
Kelsey Vaughn. Why did I agree to go out with her anyway? Oh,
right, because she’s the kind of girl who will blow you in the
locker room at a school dance or let you fuck her from behind in
her parents’ hot tub. I wonder what else Kelsey will do. A sneaky
smirk comes across my lips as I decide to find out.

“I want to dance with you,” I say
seductively, running my hand down her backless dress. She shivers
and I can feel her breathing speed up. A good sign.

“Ok, next slow song,” she nods, still trying
to act stern.

“No, I don’t want to dance with you out
there,” I say with a flirty smile, “I want to dance with you
somewhere private.”
