First Dance With You

I looked around my new dorm room and took in all the tiny details. There was another bed opposite to mine and above it a gigantic poster of a hunky man. Thongs and bras lay scattered on the floor and the few books that were on a desk in the corner were covered in dust. Under the window stood an ashtray, the cigarette on it still burning.

Kevin came inside, hauling my suitcase and dropped it onto the bed, huffing. “Is this it?”
he asked.

I turne
d around to look at his sweaty face, his dark, curly hair all over the place.

“Yeah, thanks Kev, I really appreciate all your help,” I sa
id and pecked him on the cheek.

He blushed and smiled. “Don’t mention it.” He looked around the room and his eyes locked onto the cigarettes.

“So she smokes.”

“Guess so, yeah. I
’m thinking of asking her to do it somewhere else, but I’m the new one here, so maybe I should just suck it up. I mean, I don’t want to spoil it with her before these four years are over. I have to sleep next to her the next couple of years, so it might be better if we’d become friends.”

“As long as you don’t forget about me,” Kevin said.

I chuckled. “Of course not, Kev.” I placed my hand on his shoulder. “You’re my best friend. Always will be.”

His lip twitched. “Yeah, I’ll always be here for you when you need me, especially to tow your luggage or get some dudes out of your face.” He grinned.

I poked him and laughed. “You’re more than just a great help, Kev. Come on, you know that.” I winked.

“Yeah, yeah, I know.”

“Besides, we’ve always been together, you and me, being neighbors back in town and now in this dorm too. It’s just too good. Always gonna be me and you and me against the world, Kev.” I gave him a friendly punch in the shoulder and he drew back, letting me pretend that I was strong. “Remember that time when I was being followed by that creepy kid from across the road and you stood there to protect me? God, I’ll never forget that.”

“Oh please,” Kevin rolled his eyes. “Don’t remind me of that. Not again.

You were so brave,” I said and muffled a laugh.

“Wasn’t so brave after I was lying on the ground with a bloody nose.” Kevin turned around.

“Hey, but that kid didn’t harass me anymore and that was all because of you.” I swung my arms around his neck. “You’re always there for me and that’s why I like you.”

He turned his face toward me and smiled.

Then a girl with curly, long red hair came inside, gazing at her cell phone and stood, just before she bumped into us.

“Oh, hi!” she said and waved.

I smiled an awkward smile and Kevin signaled to the door. I dropped my arm and Kevin walked past the girl.

“So you’re my new roommate then?” she asked. “Awesome.
I’m Becky.” She gave me a firm handshake.

“Emily,” I said.

“And who’s that?” she pointed at Kevin without turning around. “Your boyfriend?”

“No, no not r
eally. He’s just a friend.”

Kevin cleared his throat. “Hey, I’m gonna go. You know where to find me, right? Come see me if you need me.” Then he left.

The girl sat down on her bed and got out a packet of cigarettes from her bag. “So, if he’s not your boyfriend, then who is or don’t you have one?” She threw a lighter on the table after using it to light her cigarette.

I frowned. Her questions were bizarre, as if it was necessary to have a boyfriend in college and if you didn’t have one, you’d be the strange one.
Weird girl.

“Uh, no, I don’t.”

She took a drag. “Just curious. Want to know what my competition is.”

Competition? This girl is nuts!

I held my hands up. “Trust me, I’m no competition. I don’t really have any interest in guys.”

“Oh, why’s that?”

“I’m too busy with school.”

“School? You’ve got plenty of time to worry about that. There are so many hot guys around here and you’re young and pretty, I guess, so why not seize the moment?”

I sighed and flushed. “I’m not that type of girl alright.” I felt the heat rise to my cheeks.
Dear god, please, not now.
I knew I was getting red marks all over my face, just like always, when I was feeling uncomfortable.

She took anoth
er drag. “You’re blushing,” she said, blowing out the smoke. “What? You don’t like a hot topic?”

I started unpacking my bag, trying to avoid her perpetual gaze. “
I’m not really used to it. That’s all.”

“Hmm, well I just can’t get enough. Rock hard abs, tight chest, bulging
taut muscles, a v-line and then what’s underneath …” she made a noise that sounded like a combination of growling and moaning at the same time.

By that time I didn’t have anything left to unpack and was forced to face her again, red spots covering my entire neck. My eyes widened and I kept my mouth shut, not knowing how to respond.

Her mouth dropped open. “Oh my god, don’t tell me you’ve never seen a guy naked before.”

I rolled my eyes. “I haven’t alright, what’s the big deal?”
“So you’ve never actually … had ‘sex’ either?” She made quotation marks with her fingers.

I sighed. “Does it matter?”

She stood up and sat down next to me, her awful, burned tobacco smell spreading to my side of the room and onto my sheets. “Emily, you’re serious, aren’t you? Have you even kissed a guy?”

Staring at the floor, I twiddled with my fingers.

She nudged me with her shoulder. “Come on. We’re roomies now. You can tell me. I promise I won’t spill your secrets.”

I shrugged. “Once, maybe twice. I don’t remember. I’m just too shy, I guess.”
Actually, that was a lie. I wasn’t shy. My parents just didn’t allow it. Not anything.

She put her arm around my shoulder and heaved a sigh. “It’s been a long time, but I’m ready to take on a new one. Girl, you’ve just been promoted to my new watch-and-learn list. I’m going to help you become a woman.” She took my hand and pulled me up
from the bed. “Oh, I just love a new project!” She shrieked in excitement.

“Whoa, Becky, I’m not sure if I want to be—”

“Of course you do! You’re a college girl now, gotta live the life you know. First, let’s check your wardrobe.”

She twirled me around and eyed me from top to bottom. When she was finished, I could barely stand up straight, my head dizzy. Then I noticed someone else had entered our room.

“Ryan!” she yelped and ran over to him, throwing herself into his arms, almost smothering him with a hug.

“Emily, meet Ryan. He’s from across the hall. I think
he’s bunking with your friend.”

“Oh, so Kevin’s your guy, huh?” Ryan said and he shook my hand. He winked, his blue, hooded eyes gazing into mine, while he ran a few fingers through his beach-blond hair.

“No, no, we’re not dating,” I said, my voice changing in pitch. “He’s a friend.”

“Ah …
so Emily, settling in already?”

I flushed. “Yeah, doing great. Becky here was just telling me
the ins and outs of the dorm.”

“Oh,” Ryan smiled slyly at me. “Has she told you yet we throw parties every other

Becky clenched her hands smiled broadly. “Oh my god, that’s right! We’ve got a party tonight!” She pulled my arm and shook her head repeatedly. “You should come. Definitely.”

“I don’t know, Becky,” I said, backing off.

“Yeah, great idea, Becks,” Ryan said. “It’s a venetian themed party. Very stylish and this one isn’t organized often, so you’re out of luck if you’re not there.”

“I can’t really—”

“Oh come on, Emily, it’ll be fun. Live a

I think you should come too. Hey, you know what, if you do, I promise I’ll dance with you,” Ryan said.

“Oh, Ryan. You’re such a tease,” Becky said and then came closer to me. “I’d take him up on his offer if I were you
,” she whispered into my ear. “He’s a definite hottie and there are many girls waiting in line for him.”

“Come on,” Ryan said, cocking his head. “Please
just say yes. We need to celebrate tonight. You’re new, so get to know everyone in the building a little.”

“Oh, alright. I’ll come,” I said.

Both of them smiled and Becky burst out in cheers. “Yes!” she said and threw her arms around me. “I’ll make sure she looks nice.”

“Cool, see you tonight then,” Ryan said and winked, before taking off again.

“Need to prepare for the party, Em,” Becky said. “The venetian theme requires a mask, so I’m gonna go to the mall now and get us one. You can look through my outfits if you want, pick something you like. See ya!” she yelped before leaving.

I heaved a sigh and sat down on the bed again.
Finally it was quiet. I already felt way out of place here.

Someone knocked on my door and I turned my head. It was Kevin.

“You okay?” he asked.

I straightened my back and looked at him with what dignity I had left after that awkward conversation with Becky.
“Yeah. Fine, I guess.”

“So, what was t
hat all about? Venetian masks?”

“Oh, you heard that?”

“It’s hard not to hear her screams. Anyway, you’re going to that party then? That’s not really like you, Emily.”

“Well, it was hard to say no. Besides, they’re right. My parents can’t control my life anymore. Not here. I’m finally free. I should take advant
age of that, if only a little.”

Kevin’s eyes widened.

“I don’t mean that I’m going overboard. It’s just a party. Can’t be that bad, right? And if I don’t like it, I can leave,” I said and cleared my throat.

“Yeah, of course. I just don’t want you to
do anything you don’t want to.”

I smiled. “Thanks, Kev.”

He nodded and smiled back. “Well, gotta go. Have to … pickup something,” he said and then left again. Why he was in such a hurry, I didn’t know, but it was the last thing on my mind. I was too busy figuring out what this party would be like and how I should be dressed and god knows what Becky would return with. I wondered if I’d be able to survive it all.

The music was so loud, I could feel the floor tremble under my feet. Becky had dressed me in one of her fancy white dresses, accompanied by a silvery pink mask. It looked a little too skimpy for my taste, but this was probably part of the theme, so I just went with it.

Becky guided me to the dorm lounge where the boxes boomed and people shouted, booze was spilled and girls were dry humping guys.
I stood at the door, gawking everyone, while Becky came back with two tiny glasses. She pushed one into my hand.

“Drink!” she said and I looked at the glazy liquid inside, wondering what the hell it was. She gulped it down and waited for me to do the same. I winced when the hot liquid streamed down my throat, almost making me gag. It burned and it tasted bitter.

For a second I felt a little lightheaded.

“Whoa, hold on,” Becky said and she supported me. “Guess you haven’t had much to drink either if you’re already stumbling around after one shot.”

“Never had one in my life. What’s a shot?” I asked, taking in a large breath.

She laughed and shouted in my ear, because the music was making us deaf. “Strong alcohol, sometimes mixed.”

My pupils dilated.
“What? But we can’t drink yet!”

She frowned. “Who cares? Almost eighty percent of college life is drinking or being drunk, so
you’d better get used to it.”

I looked around the room to see if I recognized anyone, but of course it was useless. Half of them were wearing
extremely decorated masks that covered their entire face, others were only partially covered, but still I didn’t know them.

“I’m going to see if I can find Ryan,” Becky shouted and then walked
off out of sight.

The music shifted into something a little more smooth and soft, almost as if they were encouraging couples to do a slow dance. Many people found partners, maybe not all of them actually engaged, but still they shuffled around the room.

Oh, how I wished I had someone to do that with

If this was it, it was going to be a long night.
Might as well enjoy finally having some time to myself.

I took another shot and gulped it down. This time it was easier, but the warm rush still burned my throat. However, I felt proud that I’d finally done something on my own that my parents would disapprove of. It was like a mini victory, even though no one would see it.

“Hello, Emily.”

I turned around and saw a guy, his head completely covered by what looked like a shawl, his eyes hidden behind a golden mask. The only part I could see clearly were his lips and his hand that moved up to ask for mine.
