“Dad told me he popped in to see you and all you wanted by way of reward was for his pilot to pop over to Majorca to pick up the lavender for tonight’s party.”
“Yes, but your dad saved my bacon. If I’d let down Mr. T, he’d have bad-mouthed me to all his friends and my business would have been severely up a creek.”
“I know. God, you must have been bloody petrified. I’m sorry you had to go through all that on top of everything else.”
“It’s OK. It all worked out in the end.”
“Anyway, talking of business, I have news.”
“Good or bad?”
“I have secured nationwide distribution for
Bouquet.”
“Omigod. That is sensational.” She threw her arms round him. “Dan, I am so proud of you.”
“You know how we’ve been rushing like mad to get a rough cut together—well, we finally finished and I was able to send it to this distribution company. That’s why I was away. I was meeting with their chairman at his place in the Cotswolds. Anyway, he loved it.”
“That means it has to be a hit, right?”
“It’s not guaranteed by any means, but I think we could be well on the way. Having Cinders helped. I couldn’t have done it without her.”
“God, I really do have to make it up to her.”
“Don’t worry. She’s pretty thick-skinned, and, anyway, I think she’s got other things on her mind just now.”
“I guess.”
“So, getting back to me being rich, I take it you’d have
no problem flying to Rome next weekend in my dad’s private jet?”
“Blimey. You get to use that?”
“Actually, I get to fly it.”
“What? You’re a pilot?”
“I am. That is my final ever secret. Promise.”
“Cross your heart and hope to die?” She grinned.
“Absolutely.”
“You know,” she said, “I find pilots rather sexy.”
“I was hoping you might.” He pulled her toward him.
Surrounded by twinkling Japanese lanterns and candles, breathing in the heady aroma of lavender, they kissed again. Beyond them, the city sparkled like a box of jewels.
Inside, Ichiro was on the phone, pacing frantically, his words spilling over one another:
“Marty, whaddaya you mean, you don’t know what’s going on? I’m telling you, things are crazy here—Abby and Dan are on the terrace making out like it’s their final chance before their plane goes down—I can’t believe she is doing this after the way that asshole has treated her—the poor thing is so in denial—she needs help—I’m thinking we need to stage a full-on intervention here—you know what, maybe I should put in a call to my shrink back in Santa Monica….”
