We rested and relaxed for two weeks, living off the stored food items at the house. Randell organized foraging missions and along with finding food, discovered a few real live human people who had hunkered down island just like us to survive the storm and the zombies. One was an older guy turned out to a doctor and he, along with his wife, became the newest additions to our survivor’s clan at the Castle. The other discovery was a couple of newlyweds who had their extended honeymoon on the island turn into a nightmare when the world went down the drain when the zombies showed up. They stuck to themselves at a large house on the ocean side of the island, but we saw them frequently. It was sort of nice to know there were other people on the island with us.

I taught everyone how to fish and we augmented our dwindling store of food with fresh catches. It turned out that Jane knew a few things about boating and when we felt we needed more than our island could provide, we’d take well organized and well armed excursions to the neighboring islands to explore and forage for supplies. It would take a few months to work up the courage to make a trip to the mainland, though. There were pockets of zombies on the islands, but it seemed like the mainland was swarming with them.

Robbie monitored the radio, listening for any hopeful news, but there wasn’t much. The country and the world seemed to be going dark gradually as the infection and the undead spread unchecked. It was only after a few months that one piece of hopeful news filtered our way. There was hint of a rumor that there was the possibility of vaccine against the zombie virus being discovered in, of all places, Ohio. None of us took much stock in it and went about our daily lives. If the rumor turned out to be true, we’d find out about it when it did.

Jay and Jane moved out after a couple months and took up residence in the house next door. They visited nearly daily, so nothing really changed there.

Rosalita gained her strength back day-by-day. Over time, she began to mother hen all of us.

Robbie kept us informed on world events, but the news was almost never good. On a foraging mission, he found a Ham radio set and tinkered with that almost every night, communicating with other survivors. Their stories were similar to ours, as they had found safe havens all across the country and hunkered down in an undead world.

Gradually, over time, Joni’s grief subsided and her walls fell down. As she had said, it only took time. I was patient and on one magic night we got together for good.

I spent a lot of time with Martin, showing him how to shoot and fish. Jessica was stand offish for awhile, holding onto the memory of her father, but she finally let him go and we became a family.

None of this made watching world end any easier, but it made it bearable.
