“You know about that?”

“If it happened to one of the brothers and his old lady out at Blue River. You’d know about it.”

Bear was right. There was nothing sacred, that the brothers of the club did not know about.

“Is that why you’re here?”

“A small group of bikers are camping about twenty miles from the clubhouse. They could be nobody or they could be Black County renegades.”

This was news to me and could explain the meeting, which Inferno has set up at such short notice. From Inferno’s call, just as I was closing the garage and Scott’s arrival, at Ellie’s, my evening had gone downhill. And not only that. Sundance had some news on the new supplier, who had approached the garage.

“Do you want me to take a spin out?”

“That’ll not be necessary. Twiggy and Trax are heading out in the morning.”

I had watched Inferno has he entered the club to make his way over to the bar, before he had joined us. As I lifted my eyes up to his, I caught a glimpse of Dec, as he came down the stairs and it was not long before he joined us.

“I’ll talk to them before they go. It’ll be best if I go over the route with them, that they’ll be using.”

“Sure, they’ll also stop over at Blue River, before coming back.”

It did not take long to iron out the kinks of the meeting, and once Bear left our group, I brought up the subject of the new supplier.

“Have you any idea where he’s getting his stock from?”

Linc’s question, managed to silence the table.

“All Sundance can find out, is that they are from high end cars.”

“Schedule a meeting Fudge. We haven’t time for this crap, and at the moment the club could do without any further hassle.”

“I’m going over to Tie me Down.”

“I’ll join you.”

Dec left his chair after a quick word with Inferno, and it was not long before we arrived at the club. Tabby was sitting in the VIP area, and with him was his old lady, Rayven. As he spotted Dec and me approaching, he whispered in Rayven’s ear, who glanced over towards us, before she rose from her place on his knee, passing us as she left.

“Fuck, you two look like sour pusses. Who’s pissed you off?”

Neither Dec nor I answered, as we sat in the seats on either side of Tabby. Instead, we brought him up to date on what was happening at the club. While we were chatting, Silver brought over a couple of bottles of whiskey, and placed them on the table.

“Hi. I thought you guys were in need of these.”

“Thanks. What are you doing after your shift?”

“Not you, Dec. You’re pissed at Ivy, and you can pick another girl to entertain you.”

“Ivy?”

“She’s on a date with Flynn.”

For the first time since leaving Ellie’s, I felt like laughing. Especially when Dec swallowed half of his bottle before lifting the remainder and made his way to the stripper, who had just vacated the stage after doing her act. Thoughtfully, I watched as they left the room.

“What about you, Fudge?”

“I plan to get drunk Tabby, and no more.”

Ellie may have told me not to go back tonight. But I was not going to fuck up what we had totally tonight. If I were to take another woman to bed from this place or the club. I doubt if I would make it to one of the rooms, before Ellie found out. Nope, Rayven was here, and as I had left the clubhouse, Baby Blu and Cassie had turned up. Devil’s Comfort has a new grapevine and it was a dangerous one. One that I intended to keep clear of, if it was possible.

Tabby’s glee at my predicament, is like a knife twisting in my stomach, reminding me that Scott, was probably still at the house with Ellie. That she was probably making him a coffee, as they sat on the couch, watching television, while the kids were in bed. How fucking cozy.

“Where are you planning to crash tonight?”

“At the club. Why?”

“Let’s go. Rayven can close up, and Fraggle, can bring her along to the club afterwards.”

“Fuck Tabby, I don’t need a father.”

“Good. Because I don’t plan on being one.”

When I woke the next morning, my mouth tasted like sandpaper, and in the distance there was a high pitch humming. Gingerly, I opened one eye, only to close it again from the stark morning sunlight. A feminine giggle had my body going still, making me go over the previous night’s events. Fuck, I would have sworn I was not going to touch another woman. And now there was no chance in hell that Ellie was going to forgive me.

“I know you’re awake.”

That voice is ecstasy for a man, who was about to die. Cautiously, so as not to disturb my dream. I turned towards the sound, and opened my eyes a slit. And there she sat.  My redeemer. In all of her glory. Blond hair tumbled around her face, eyes full of mischief as she laughed at me.

“I was an ass.”

Ellie’s head nodded sagely.

“You’ll not get any argument from me over that.”

“Kiss me.”

As much as it ached, I lifted my arms, and twisted my fingers in Ellie’s hair and pulled her down till our lips met. This kiss was different from the last one we shared. This time, as our lips met, Ellie was in charge of the kiss. There was no night breath from Ellie. It was all mint toothpaste and sweet coffee. The closer Ellie’s body moved to mine. The deeper I started to take the kiss. My hand cupping on to the back of her neck, preventing her from breaking free. Eventually Ellie pulled back.

“Nick. Scott’s my brother in law. I never had feelings for him when I was married to Carl and I sure as hell haven’t any for him now. You have to trust me.”

“I’m a bastard.”

“Yeah, I know.”

“Ellie, it’s neither fair nor right to agree with a man when he’s down.”

“You’re not down Nick. You’re hangover.”

“I could do with some sympathy Ellie.”

The sound of Ellie’s merriment, was a balm to my frayed soul. Hope to my torn legacy. As Ellie sat on the bed, I twined our fingers together and raised her hand to my lips, and placed another kiss. Hangover or not, my cock was twitching, and I was going to see how far I could push my luck. As my tongue snaked out and swiped across Ellie’s pale wrist, she pulled her arm free. Still giggling, she stood up and straightened the short skirt she was wearing. Ellie’s legs went on forever, and I let my eyes slide down the full length. This did not help the condition of my cock, which had gone from semi to rock hard.

“Get out of bed Nick, and meet me downstairs.”

“Bitch.”

Ellie’s amusement echoed in the room as she left, closing the door behind her.

Shit for two years I have treated Ellie like one of the club whores. Never seeing her as anything but a body. I do not know when, how or why my feeling towards her changed. All I know is that they had, and that I had two years of courtship to make up.

It was not my trust in Ellie that was in question. No, it was Ellie’s trust in me. Two years of damage was done and I had no idea how to repair it. A knock on the door had me turning towards the wooden object, as it opened, Flynn walked in

“Fancy a round or two?”

Shit. Could a man not suffer in peace anymore?

Chapter 13

When Nick had left, to go to the club the evening before. Between them, Scott and Sundance had fitted the new alarm system. Later, they had played on the PS3, with Toby and Amelia. Once the children were settled for the night, Scott had left, leaving Sundance to watch the television. While I read through the file, which Frankie had handed to me earlier in the day.

Shortly after ten, Rayven had rung to let me know that Nick was at Tie Me Down. At the time I had believed this was it. That he was going to take my words, and fuck one of the whores. In the background, Sundance was chattering away on his own cell. Unable to settle, I had moved to the kitchen, and poured myself a wine.

“Scott’s at the club house.”

“And?”

“Nick has just arrived with Tabby, and they’re having a game of pool.”

With what I hoped, was a casual roll of my shoulders, I poured a second glass of wine for Sundance. The cut glass looked lost in his large hands and I could not keep my smile at bay.

“You have a pretty smile, Ellie. You should do it more often.”

“Are you coming on to me?”

“Fuck no. I like my balls just where they are.”

Sundance is about my age, and just like Nick, he has a happy, carefree approach to life. Yet, if you looked deep into his soul, you can see the pain he keeps at bay. I know little about Sundance, and the same can be said for the other members of Devil’s Comfort. Yet this heterogeneous crew had been drawn together. Like a pack of lone wolves, disowned by their own peers, they had formed their own pack. A pack to be feared.

“Just because he’s at the club, doesn’t mean he’ll not pick up one of the whores there.”

“You two never did date like a normal couple.”

This time, there was no holding back the bubble of laughter as it escaped from the pit of my stomach.

“I hate men, when they’re right.”

“Ah, but you love me.”

With the wine bottle now empty, I collected a couple of beers, which I had bought for Nick and passed one to Sundance. For a long time, I have been deprived of adult company in the evening, and just as with Nick, I am enjoying Sundance’s company.

This morning, when I had woken up, there had been a text from both Baby Blu and Cassie, informing me that Nick had passed out sometime during the night, and had to be put to bed.

Euphoria surged through me, as I clutched the phone to my chest, and I had jumped out of bed, showered, and dropped Toby and Amelia off at school. Now, I was sitting in the kitchen at Devil’s Comforts clubhouse, waiting for Nick.

A light kiss on the back of my neck, told me that Nick has now joined me in the kitchen. Wordlessly, I watch Nick, as he pours himself a coffee, before joining me at the table. His hair was wet, and tousled from his recent shower, and his eyes were still slightly blood shot.

“That was some night you had.”

Nick’s answer, was to light a cheroot, whilst shooting me, a lopsided smile. A smile that caused my heart to flip, and for a moment, I forgot how to breathe. This man was too beautiful, and I was halfway to losing my heart to him. Self-consciously, I twirled the band on my finger. The memory of Carl surfacing. Quietly I reminded myself that Carl was dead, and that I had a right to a new life.

“What would you have done Ellie, if there had been a couple of whores in my bed?”

“You can be crass at times, Nick.”

“That doesn’t answer my question.”

“It’s the only one you’re getting. Now if you don’t want to ruin what’s left of the morning. Shut Up.”

Nick threw his arms up in the air as he pursed his lips at me, which made me glare at him.

“I’ve got to get to the garage. I’ll see you tonight.”

Nick rose from his chair, pulling his keys from his pocket. Just as he was about to leave, he turned and bent towards me, taking my mouth, in a kiss, which left me wanting more.

“Ellie. Thanks.”

As I watched him leave, I asked.

“What for.”

“For being there when I woke up.”

Now that Nick was no longer in the room, or at the club, there were only Flynn and Sundance in the kitchen. As I sat at the table with an inane smile on my face, I began to feel silly. To cover my embarrassment, I turned towards Sundance, and tossed him the book I had brought for him.

“If you’re with me today, this should stop you from getting bored.”

Flynn’s laughter filtered through, as he sipped on his coffee, and Sundance picked the book up, as he rose from the table, following me through to the parking lot.

“He’ll dump you, without a word.”

It was early afternoon, and I was on my way to meet the girls at Little Sammie’s. When a dress in Cassie’s boutique, had caught my eye. As I gazed at the dress, a voice interrupted my dreaming. Turning at the sound, I found myself staring at a young woman in her early to mid-twenties. She was about the same height as myself, and she had tight curly dark hair. Her eyes were full of hatred, as she looked at me. I became cold from the inside, as a shiver, spiraled down my back.

“I’m sorry. Did you say something?”

“He’ll fuck you. Then he’ll leave you for one of the other skanks at the club.”

“Look, I don’t know what your problem is. But I do suggest you take it elsewhere.”
