I watched as the dense buildings give way to green mountains and breathed a sigh of relief. It wasn’t that I hadn’t loved my life in the city, working at a major fashion magazine and living a cosmopolitan lifestyle. It was just that I knew my future lay ahead of me in the sparsely populate mountain town that was about to become my new home.
I had applied for the job at the small newspaper only weeks after both my parents were killed in a horrible car crash. It was like suddenly my life seemed hollow and I knew I needed to get away and start fresh somewhere new. I wanted to try living a slower life, find love, start a family, and make those things a priority. My priority in the city had always been getting ahead in my job and it never really gave me true happiness. Now I had a chance to try and see if I could find it.
The drive seemed to take forever, even though it was only a few hours to move from my old apartment to my new home out in the small mountain town. I pulled into the gravel driveway and finally got out to stretch. My body was what my mother had lovingly called “womanly” or “like a true black lady” and many hateful peers had called “fat.” I had grown into my body and finally embraced my dark mocha curves as I grew up, but being trapped in a cramped car for hours reminded me that my bountiful curves needed more space than most women.
As I stretched out my sore limbs, I glanced around at my new home. The house was small, but beautiful. It had an old colonial look and was painted a beautiful sage green with pale dusty rose accents. It immediately felt like home. The house was set back from the road and the backyard bordered the thick, mountainous woods that encircled the town. To my left was mostly empty meadow, and to my right was another house several yards down.
I shielded my eyes from the strong sun and looked over at my new neighbors. The house and yard were neat and orderly, but much more masculine in appearance than my own little cottage. At first I didn’t see my new neighbors, until a flicker of movement to the side of the house caught my eye. There were two of them, white, muscular, tall, and dark haired. They seemed to be watching me as they carried some lumber across their yard to a small woodshed. As the second man turned, I realized that the men were twins. They both had the same strong, sharp jawline and chiseled features. I had to admit, I’d always had a thing for white men and these two were fine specimens.
They must have noticed me staring, but they didn’t seem to mind. In fact, they turned and both waved at me with big grins on their face after they placed their lumber in the shed.
“Hey there,” I called out to them. “I’m your new neighbor. My name’s Ashia.”
“Welcome to town, Ashia,” the first man called out. “I’m Blake and this is here is my brother, Bard. We would love to have you over for dinner tonight after you get moved in.”
“And let us know if you need any help!” Bard chimed in. The two men exchanged a mischievous look and then got back to work carrying their wood.
I decided it would be terribly rude to continue staring at their bulging muscles, so I moved my few suitcases into my new house and started unpacking. After a few hours, I decided to head into the town and pick up some supplies to get me through my first few days until I had time to do a real shopping excursion.
I followed the narrow winding road down to the small main street that served as the center of town. There were only a few small shops and restaurants, so I wandered along, glancing in the windows. I found a small market commissary that looked perfect for my needs. I grabbed a basket and walked through the store, picking up a few necessities and nonperishable foods to last me until I could get properly set up.
I brought my basket to the front counter, where a skinny grey-haired woman sat reading a thriller. She looked up as I approached and smiled.
“Hello, dear. Are you passing through for the festival over in Armenstown?” she asked as I placed my items on the counter.
“Actually, I just moved here. I’ve got a job over at the paper and just moved in today from the city.”
“Oh, you’ll love it here,” she assured me. “Where did you move?”
“The green and pink cottage over the hill there by the woods, next door to these twins, I think? Their names are Blake and Bard.”
“That’s a beautiful house, dear,” the woman said cautiously as she bagged my groceries. “But I would avoid those boys. They are nothing but trouble for good people. Their family has lived here for ages and there are all sorts of rumors. Best to stay away from that type.”
“What kind of rumors?” I asked, my inner reporter coming out.
“Oh, you know, just stories…who knows the truth, really. But you’ll find good people here avoid them,” she deflected before smiling and bidding me good evening.
I headed back to my new home, musing over what the old white woman had said to me. My neighbors seemed like the decent sort, from our short interaction. I had to admit their incredible good looks might have influenced my opinion of them, but they had been kind to offer to help me move in and to invite me over for dinner. Nevertheless, the woman had seemed fairly certain that most of the townsfolk here avoided them for good reason. I decided that I would make my own judgment of them after dinner. I didn’t like to make snap judgments on people, especially based on vague rumors. The same had often happened to my family based on our race.
As I finished unloading my provisions in my new kitchen, I heard a knock on my front door. I opened it to find one of the twins waiting with an easy smile on his handsome face. Up close, he was even more attractive than I had realized. His skin glimmered with a golden tan that set off the gorgeous light blue color in his eyes and the dark hair that fell across his forehead.
“Hey there,” he said in a deep honeyed voice. “You ready for dinner, or is there anything you would like help with first?”
“Dinner sounds fantastic,” I replied. “I haven’t gotten the chance to eat since breakfast. You’re Blake, right?”
“Impressive!” he grinned. “Most people are always mixing us up.”
“Well, you do look incredibly similar,” I agreed. “But more like mirror images than exact copies. I noticed earlier that your smile leans more to the left and your bother’s leans to the right.”
“You are very perceptive,” Blake said seriously as I headed out the door with him. “Only close family can tell us apart. We…I…think you’re special.”
“I’m pretty ordinary,” I countered. “I guess maybe it is just my training as a reporter.”
“A reporter?” he asked, suddenly guarded.
“Yeah, but nothing all that exciting,” I explained. “I used to work at a fashion magazine and now I’m going to work at the newspaper out here.”
His easy smile returned and we had just reached the door to his house. I wondered if his fear of reporters was just a normal small town thing or was related to some illicit activity like the old woman at the market had implied.
“There you are! Been hogging the lovely lady and keeping her all to yourself?” Bard called as we entered the house.
“Nah, don’t you worry. She hasn’t declared favorites,” Blake winked at me. “Ashia’s just been telling me how she’s going to be working at the newspaper in town.”
“Is that right?” Bard asked, his smile tilting in mirror image to his brother’s. I couldn’t help but be drawn in by their friendly banter and instantly felt at home in the house. Plus, the delicious smell of food wafted through the air and my tummy grumbled.
“Let’s feed the lady! It would be terrible to starve our lovely guest to death on her first night here,” Blake said as we walked into the homey kitchen. The small wooden table was already decked out with dishes filled with roasted meat, crusty bread, and a fresh looking salad.
“You guys sure can cook!” I exclaimed after taking my first bite. The food tasted delicious and fresh. “Thank you so much for having me over for dinner.”
“It’s been our pleasure,” Blake replied kindly.
“Plus, we have our own ulterior motives,” Bard added with a wicked grin.
I felt my pulse quicken and put down my fork, remembering the old woman’s warning words.
“What do you mean?” I asked cautiously.
“Don’t mind my brother. His big mouth gets in his way all the damn time,” Blake said with a harsh look over at his twin.
“I think she should know. It’s her destiny too,” Bard retorted.
“Know what?” I asked, feeling even more nervous. “Tell me what is going on.”
“It would have been better to get to know each other first,” Blake said gently. “But since my brother can’t keep his mouth shut, we’ll need to tell you now. Please just keep an open mind. I know that what we are about to tell you will sound insane, but I promise it is true and we can prove it.”
“Alright,” I agreed. Normally, I would have left immediately, but something drew me into these brothers. They were the most attractive white men I had ever met, but something else drew me to them. They made me fell safe and happy in a way that I never had before. I thought they deserved to be heard out.
“I guess we’ll start at the beginning,” Blake said gently, reaching out to touch my hand. “Our family has lived on this mountain for many generations. We aren’t like most people here, or most people at all. Ashia, we are bear shifters. That means that we can turn from men into bears at will.”
“Seriously?” I interrupted. “You don’t need to fuck with me. What are you guys really involved with?”
“Okay, maybe before we go any further Bard can give you a little demonstration,” Blake said with a meaningful look at his brother. “Just don’t be afraid. He will still be the same person on the inside and I’ll be right here next to you.”
Bard nodded to his brother and got up from the table, walking out the side door from the kitchen to the yard.
“Where are you going?” I asked, but he just grinned back at me.
As soon as he was outside, Bard stopped and tensed his muscles. At first it was only a small change, his arms looked hairier, his face looked longer. Then suddenly, his body seemed to snap, gliding into his new shape. Where the handsome man had just been standing there was suddenly a large brown bear.
“Oh my God!” I whispered, staring at the bear, then back at Blake. “You were telling the truth.”
“I know it must be a big shock. But I promise we aren’t as scary as we seem. People tend not to understand us and they stay clear. But our clan is full of very kind people, who just happen to be shifters. We have all sorts of rules about never harming humans and never using our powers for ill.”
“Plus, we can show you all sorts of awesome secret stuff. And bears mate for life,” Bard added with a wink. He had somehow managed to transform back to his human form and sneak back in while I was looking at his brother.
“Maybe we should wait until another time to tell her the rest,” Blake warned. “She’s already had a lot to swallow today.”
“No, please tell me everything,” I interjected. “I need to know.”
The brothers looked at each other and an understanding passed between them. Blake nodded and Bard grinned.
“Ashia, bear shifters know their mates as soon as they meet them. Their inner bear senses it immediately,” Bard said, his voice sounding eager yet gentle. “Since Blake and I are twins, our inner bears are linked. We always knew we would share a mate. When we saw you earlier, something clicked, and we knew it was you. It wasn’t just your beautiful face, lovely dark skin and perfect, womanly body. We feel a deep connection to you. We will always protect you, care for you, love you, and pleasure you.”
“If you want us,” Blake added.
“I…I don’t know what to say,” I replied, my head suddenly spinning. It was too much for me to handle. I had just learned that my sexy, white twin neighbors were bears, and now they wanted to share me…sexually…for all eternity? It couldn’t possibly be real.
“Do you want some time away from us to think it all over?” Blake asked.
