“Undercover” in Chile, my first foreign post, 1971

View from the Hotel Carrera of the Chilean presidential palace being stormed on September 11, 1973, in a coup that toppled President Salvador Allende. Though the CIA has long been blamed for its hand in this action, it did not plot with the military to overthrow Allende.

In charge of the largest covert operation of the Cold War—aka “Charlie Wilson’s War.” To support the Afghan mujahideen in their efforts to repel the Russians, I traveled to China (
above
) to buy the mules to haul matériel across the Pakistan border, and to Egypt (
below
) for the AK-47s.
