written on it in spidery capitals. I'm beyond embarrassment and take it all in my stride.

Masher sits on his bike, watching us. I give him a wave. He may be a complete twazzock and totally unrequited in his (true) love for me, but he went to see Mr Patterson last week and insisted he gave a talk in assembly about Leah and me doing the Fun Run, which got us hundreds more sponsors. Between the three of us, we should raise over a thousand pounds for the Cardiac Unit.

Suddenly, a ripple of excitement works its way through the crowd. The officials are gearing up to start. We're about to go.

Sam turns to me. ‘Good luck, Becky,' he says with a smile. My heart beats a little faster, and I realise that I have never been happier.

The starting gun bangs and off we go with three thousand other people. I'm running for Callum, running for Alice . . .
