21. Hiding the Keyboard in the Messages Application

While reading a text message, you can hide the keyboard to view more of the conversation at once. Touch the last visible message in the conversation and slide your finger down to the keyboard. The keyboard is hidden.

22. Controlling Web Surfing Using Gestures

Instead of touching the
and
buttons to go back and forward, respectively, you can touch the screen and slide your finger the left or right, respectively.

23. Navigating the Menus Using Gestures

Instead of touching the text in the upper left-hand corner of the screen to return to the previous menu, just touch the left-hand side of the screen and slide your finger to the right. This works in most applications as well, such as the Music application.

24. Pausing or Cancelling an Application Download

If you are downloading more than one application at a time, you may wish to pause one of the downloads so that one of the other applications downloads first. To pause an application download, touch the application icon of the application that you wish to pause. Touch the icon again to resume the download. You may also cancel the download by deleting the application. Refer to

25. Making a Quick Note for a Contact

You may take a quick note for a contact without having to edit the entire contents of the contact. To make a quick note for a contact, touch
Notes
on the contact's information screen. Touch
All Contacts
at the top of the screen to save the note.

26. Using a Search Engine that Does Not Track Your Searches

Safari now allows you to use a new search engine, called DuckDuckGo. This search engine comes from a start-up company, and allows you to search the Web without tracking your searches like Google. Refer to

27. Preventing Applications from Refreshing in the Background

Certain applications, such as Podcasts and Weather will refresh their content even when the application is closed. This can drain your battery more quickly. To prevent applications from refreshing in the background:

1. Touch the
 icon. The Settings screen appears.
2. Touch
General
. The General Settings screen appears.
3. Touch
Background App Refresh
. The Background App Refresh screen appears.
4. Touch the
switch next to 'Background App Refresh'. The
switch appears and the feature is turned off.

8. Leaving Your Home Screen Free of Icons

If you are a wallpaper connoisseur, you may wish to leave your main Home screen empty. In iOS 7 and earlier, if you tried to move all of your icons to other screens, the second Home screen took the place of the first. Starting in iOS 8, you may now move all of your icons to other screens, and leave your main Home screen empty. This way, you can look at your wallpaper all day long without the intrusion of those pesky icons.

29. Call Waiting in FaceTime

FaceTime now allows you to accept another call while you are already on a call. To accept a call and end the current one, touch
End & Accept
. To reject an incoming call, touch
Decline
.

30. Adding an Event Mentioned in a Text Message to the Calendar

You may add a planned event from a text message directly to your calendar. Touch the blue underlined text, such as "dinner tonight", and then touch Create Event or Show in Calendar, if the event already exists and you need to change some of the details.

1. Phone does not turn on

If the phone does not power on, try one or more of the following tips:

- Recharge the phone
- Use the included wall charger to charge the battery. If the battery power is extremely low, the screen will not turn on for several minutes. Do NOT use the USB port on your computer to charge the phone.
-
Replace the battery
- If you purchased the phone a long time ago, you may need to replace the battery. Contact Apple to learn how.
-
Reset the phone
- This method will not erase any data. Hold down the
Home
button and
Sleep/Wake
button at the same time for 10 seconds. Keep holding the two buttons until the
 logo appears and the phone restarts.

2. Phone is not responding

If the phone is frozen or is not responding, try one or more of the following. These steps solve most problems on the phone.

- Exit the application
- If the phone freezes while running an application, hold the
Home
Button for six seconds. The application quits and the phone returns to the Home screen.
-
Turn the phone off and then back on
- If the phone is still frozen, try pressing the
Sleep/Wake
button to turn the phone off. Keep holding the
Sleep/Wake
Button until "Slide to Power Off" appears. Slide your finger from left to right over the text. The phone turns off. After the screen is completely black, press the
Sleep/Wake
button again to turn the phone back on.
-
Restart the phone
- Hold the
Home
button and
Sleep/Wake
button at the same time for 10 seconds or until the
 logo appears.
-
Remove Media
- Some downloaded applications or music may freeze up the phone. Try deleting some of the media that may be problematic after restarting the phone. Refer to
Deleting an Application
to learn how to delete an application. You may also erase all data at once by doing the following:

Warning: Once erased, data cannot be recovered. Make sure you back up any files you wish to keep.

1. Touch the
 icon. The Settings screen appears.
2. Touch
General
. The General Settings screen appears.
3. Touch
Reset
. The Reset screen appears.
4. Touch
Erase All Content and Settings
. A confirmation dialog appears.
