"Tis because you are a hopeless flirt and she dare not toss your affections to the populace at large," Fiona said, entering the fray.

"Tis because she adores me," Roderic countered.

A round of differing opinions yipped up in boisterous dissension amongst a family that had forged a bond that death itself would not break.

Dear God, she was an angel. An ebon-haired celestial being dressed in gold. The gown caressed her body like a lover's hands. She looked as regal as a princess, as untouchable as a saint.

He couldn't breathe, couldn't think, couldn't speak as she drew near. Her otherworldly gaze lifted to his, her sinner's mouth quirked in the slight suggestion of a tremulous smile.

She stopped only inches from him, but still he couldn't move.

"Well hell, lad, say something," Roderic urged, nudging his arm.

Liam swallowed, his heart pounding like a wild steed in his chest.

"Liam...speechless!" Shona said in awe. "Do you think you can save him, Lady Fiona?"

Liam heard the voices, but in that instant Rachel's hand brushed his.

"Rachel." He breathed her name like a parched prayer. "I have nothing to give you. No family, no name. Not even Liam the Bastard any longer."

She smiled that smile that spoke of kindness and chaos. "Nay," she whispered. "No longer a bastard. From hence forth I will call you Liam my love," she said, and slipping her hand behind his neck, she kissed him to the wild applause of their family.
