“Yeah. Why not? I was good with that kid.”

She giggled. “I can’t decide if you’re serious.”

“I don’t know—why not? What else do I have to do? I might as well be of some use in this world.”

She gaped, hardly able to assimilate it all. “So...does this mean you’re my boyfriend?”

He grinned. “I am most definitely your boyfriend, along with your vampire, lover and master.” He moved closer and wrapped his arms around her, sliding his hands down to cup her ass. “Do I get to meet your friends now?”

She bit her lip. “I suppose I’ll never be able to tell them, will I?”

His expression sobered. “It’s better if you don’t.”

She looked up, seriously contemplating how life would be, mated to a vampire—the difficulties of his nocturnal restrictions, or of her mortality. ”Is it done much? A vampire with a mortal?”

“There’s another vampire in town who is married to a mortal about your age. They even have a baby—no one knows how. Probably artificial insemination. We could hang out with them see how they do it.” He smiled down at her warmly.

The idea encouraged her. “I guess we’ll...figure it all out?” she said uncertainly.

He kissed her forehead. “Yes, love. I don’t know how, exactly, but we’ve established the main points.”

“Which are?”

“You’re mine. And I’m not going to walk out on you.”

Tears filled her eyes in a rush.

“What?” he asked softly, his face showing concern.

She shook her head, trying to duck her gaze.

He put a finger under her chin and lifted it until she looked at him again. “I have something for you,” he said softly. “I bought it for you when you were Anka. I kept it all these years, but I never knew why.” He smiled. “Now I do.”

He pulled a silver chain out of his pocket, from which dangled dozens of red gemstones.

“Garnet?”

“Rubies, love. They’re supposedly good for blood and circulation.”

She giggled. “Ah. This is really a gift for you. Kinda like the corset and stockings.”

He made a twirling motion with his index finger.

She turned and lifted her hair from her nape, waiting as he fastened the incredible necklace. “This must be worth a fortune.”

“I’ll buy you any and every stone or crystal you want. They each have special powers, or so Anka believed.” He kissed her neck in the place he’d bitten it earlier.

The necklace buzzed on her neck, and she sensed the truth of his statement. Excitement about continuing to develop her powers in partnership with Charlie made her pulse quicken. “You’re really sticking around?”

“There’s no getting rid of me. You’d have to drive a stake through my heart.”

She giggled, sniffing. “I’ve tried that. I already know how that ends.”

He gripped her ass and squeezed. “Want to try again?” he asked in a low seductive voice.

She laughed, her eyes still moist. “I love you, vampire.”

His face grew serious and he stroked her cheek with his thumb. “I love you, little fairy.”
