,” James whispered in my ear. My eyes fluttered open and I saw a beam of light filtering through our bedroom window. The early morning sun would have been much more beautiful if I hadn’t been up most of the night with the baby. I turned and looked at my future husband who was beaming like a proud father. And looking oh-so-sexy holding our son, Grant.
“Good morning, baby,” I said, reaching out for the little one. He made his usual baby squeaking sounds and sucked on his lips. He was hungry.
“Penelope will be here soon, but I heard him fussing and knew you’d want to give him his first feeding of the day.”
“I do,” I replied, lowering him to my breast.
“I’ll go and get your tea.” James kissed me on the forehead and left the room.
I gazed at Grant, and then I looked at the three-carat diamond ring resting brilliantly on my finger, thinking about how lucky I was. He and I would be married in a private ceremony in two days. We really wanted to keep it simple, and we hadn’t given any of our friends or family an official date. There was something sexy about planning a secret wedding. Right after exchanging vows, we were heading to Barbados for the honeymoon.
James walked back into the room and set my tea on the bedside table.
“Are you sure you’re okay with leaving Grant here with Penelope?” he asked.
Our original plan included taking him. I couldn’t fathom being away from our newborn son for a whole week. He was barely a month old, after all. But in the end, I decided that James and I needed the alone time together. Especially after finally getting rid of Kristin once and for all. It wasn’t easy getting her out of our lives. Her test for Korsakoff’s came back negative. But ultimately, she met someone else and fell in love. The last we heard, they were living together somewhere in the Midwest. We haven’t heard from her in five months, so that’s a good thing.
“Yes, I’m sure,” I told James. “And you know that I completely trust the nanny. But don’t get upset with me if I want to come home after three days.”
James grinned and looked down at our son who was nursing.
“How could I ever get upset with you, my love?”
