Chapter 1

Taylor Sullivan was silently cursing herself as she pulled over to the side of the road.

“Great. Just great,”
she thought as she unbuckled her seatbelt. She sighed as she looked at the smoking hood of her car, wondering what she was supposed to do. It was her first day on a new job. She had absolutely no idea what to expect, and the fact that her car was acting up was not a very good way of starting the day. She reached for her phone and stared at it, wondering what she should do first.

Uber, Triple A

Uber, Triple A…”
She sighed.
“Uber. Definitely Uber.”
She finally decided as she launched the Uber app. She then called Triple A and gave them her location.

She was starting her new job as Zachary Cohen’s personal secretary. It had been almost an entire week since she found out that she was going to be working for Zachary Cohen, the biggest deal since…. sliced bread, probably. Zachary Cohen was every woman’s dream. He was a well-toned, muscular, dark-haired man who, for the longest time, people had known as the face of Cohen Consolidated. The company was involved in almost every industry in Atlanta. Cohen Consolidated was involved in the entertainment, advertising, and media industry in at least twenty states. Apart from that, Cohen Consolidated was a familiar name in the Middle East, where Zachary had invested in various oil companies and airlines.

She had been waiting for almost fifteen minutes before the Triple A truck finally arrived, and lucky too, because it was just seconds before her Uber.

“So how does this work, exactly?” she asked the Triple A driver as she signed the paperwork.

“We will take the car down to the shop and you will pick it up from there,” the driver said. “Haven’t you ever called Triple A before?” he asked, raising an eyebrow over the other.

“No, I never had a reason to,” Taylor started. “I just got this car a few months ago.”

“Virgin,” the driver said, smiling.

“Excuse me?” Taylor almost slapped him.

“No, don’t get me wrong. I mean that this is a first for you,” the driver corrected himself quickly. She forced out an embarrassed smile. “The car should be ready in a few days. Five max.”

“Thanks for coming so fast,” she said, before she walked to the Uber. She could almost feel the driver’s eyes on her as she walked, thanks to the lace burgundy pencil dress she had on that hugged her hips perfectly. She climbed into the Uber and smiled at the driver. “Cohen Consolidated,” she said, as she strapped herself in.

When she finally got to the Cohen Consolidated, she stared up the building. For a minute, she felt like Maria in that scene where she first saw the von Trapp mansion. It was definitely so much bigger than she thought it would be. She took a long, deep breath and walked in. She had to first make her way to the fourth floor so that she could clear the logistics with Human Resources.

When she got there, she looked at a slim red-haired man in a seemingly small office.

“Hi,” she said in a soft voice. “Simon, is it?” she asked as she looked at the name plaque on his desk.

“Yes, it is. And hello, yourself,” the man said in a suggestive tone. “Those shoes are fierce.”

A smiled played on Taylor’s lips. Suddenly the blue plaid skinny pants he had on made sense.

“Thanks,” she said as she waked towards his desk. “Taylor Sullivan. I’m here for Zachary Cohen. I am the new secretary.”

The man raised an eyebrow and smiled at her.

“Really?” he asked as he pulled his chair back and pulled one of the drawers on his desk. “You are lucky number three,” he added as he handed her a file he had pulled from the drawers. “I will need your John Hancock right here. It’s your official contract.”

Taylor looked at him and then signed at the bottom of the page.

“I want to say thanks for everything but I am a little skeptical,” she said as she looked at him. “Lucky number three?” she asked shaking her head and Simon nodded.

“Yeah. There have been two other secretaries before you,” he said.

“Why?” she didn’t understand what all this was about.

“Now, there is one thing you have to understand, Taylor,” the man told her as he looked into her eyes intently. “Mr. Cohen can be a little hard to please.”

“Hard to please?” she repeated in a low tone.

“Let’s just say that you will be the third secretary he’s had this year,” Simon said.

“Third? July just began,” she said.

“Tell me something I don’t know,” Simon said, rolling his eyes. “But like I said, Mr. Cohen is hard to please.”

“So he fired the other two?” she asked in a low tone. Simon looked at her as he led her out of the office.

“Don’t be silly. No one was fired. They were just reassigned,” he said. They were now standing outside the elevator, waiting for its doors to open. “It’s easier that way. Less dramatic and definitely a smart financial move,” he added as they stepped into the elevator.

“What does reassigning them have to do with finances?” Taylor asked.

“Well, the company doesn’t get sued since it is simply just moving someone to a new department,” he explained. “Wrongful termination does not apply.” He smiled at her.

Taylor took a long deep breath as the elevator doors opened. She looked at Simon and smiled.

“Well, I need this job, so there is no way I am leaving unless I am damn well and ready to do so,” she said, before she walked out of the elevator. Simon put his hand on the elevator door keeping it from closing and smiled proudly.

“You go, girl!” she heard him call out as she walked towards her new desk. The thirty-seventh floor was very much unlike the second floor where Simon had been situated. The view was better, the furniture was classier, and hell, even the air smelled a little fresher. She put her purse down on her new desk and looked around the place.

“I could get used to this,” she said to no one in particular, as she scanned the larger than life office. She had only been a personal secretary to one other person and his office space was not nearly as big as this. This

this was a whole new world. She then slowly made her way into Zachary’s office. She could not help but feel like she was standing in Harvey Specter’s office. Everything from the view of the beautiful city below and the half dozen autographed baseballs on his desk. There were personalized mugs lining one wall that had Zachary pictured with various celebrities.

“I could definitely get used to this,” she said again as she looked around.

“Get used to what?” she heard a male voice behind her making her gasp silently. She turned around and came face-to-face with her new boss, Zachary Cohen.
The
Zachary Cohen.

‘Mr. Cohen, sir,” she started, as she wondered if walking out of the office at that moment was a good idea. “I literally just walked in a couple of minutes ago.”

Zachary walked towards her and put his iPad on his desk.

“There is no problem with getting yourself acquainted with the new premises,” he said and she nodded. He turned around and looked at her. “Do you mind if I get you started with a few tasks?”

“I am here for anything and everything you need, Mr. Cohen,” she said with a smile.

“Good. I will email you a list of all my contacts and then I need you to make a call to my Dubai offices and set up a conference call for 11:00 am. Afterwards, I would like you to call the London office and tell them I will be sending an envoy tomorrow. I cannot make the meeting.” He walked around and took a seat. “And I like my coffee strong and black,” he added as he looked at her.

“Right away,” she said before she walked out of his office.

She could feel him looking at her as she walked away. And even though she hated to admit it, she liked it. But at the back of her mind, she could not help but wonder if she was just another secretary that he was but to fire.

“I really need this job. I really, really don’t want to mess this up,”
she thought as she got started on his coffee.

Chapter 2

By the end of her first day, Taylor was convinced more than ever that she had lived through her very last day as Zachary’s secretary. Everything that could possibly go wrong actually did. The coffee she made him was not as strong as he would have liked it and the fact that it took her an extra three minutes to get the ‘right’ mug meant that the coffee was not as hot as it should have been. She had then gone on to file the wrong papers and shred the right ones

the day was basically a disaster.

At around four-thirty, she was ready to pack up her desk and just leave. That was the only way she was assured that she could leave the building with her dignity still intact. She had just picked up her purse to leave when Zachary called her into his office. She took a long deep breath and pushed her chair back before she stood up. She walked into his office and found him typing something on his laptop.

“Miss Sullivan, have a seat, please,” he said as he turned to look at her.

“Okay,” Taylor said in a less than sure voice. She was looking right at him as he leaned back in his chair. She almost felt as if his deep-searching eyes were looking right into her.

“Is this your first secretarial job, Miss Sullivan?” he suddenly asked. She looked at him and shook her head.

“No

not really.”

Zachary raised an eyebrow over the other.

“Not really?” he echoed and she nodded.

“Well, what I mean to say is that I have worked as a secretary before

twice, actually,” she said, her voice shaking.

There was a long uncomfortable silence before he finally talked again.

“Why did you leave your two previous posts, if you don’t mind my asking?” he asked, looking right into her brown eyes.

“Well, the first company went out of business and the second one…” she paused and exhaled deeply. She did not know how she could politely put ‘the boss spanked me once and I quit’. “I don’t like to talk about the second one so much. All I can say is that it did not end well.”

“I don’t want to sound like I am prying, Miss Sullivan, but I have to ask. Is there a Mr. Sullivan?” Zachary suddenly asked. Taylor knew that her surprise was written all over her face.

“Well, there is my dad if that is what you are asking,” she said, even though she knew that she was not telling him what he wanted to hear. “Hence the Miss before my name and not Mrs.”

Zachary smiled.

“I don’t want to sound too direct, Miss Sullivan,” he started as he leaned forward. “All I want to know is if I need to think twice before I invite you out to a party at The Hamptons tonight.”

Taylor forced out a cough.

Tonight
?” she asked in surprise and he nodded.

“Yes, tonight,” Zachary said as he shut down his computer. “I do detest those parties and I think the company of a lovely woman such as yourself would make it worthwhile.” She shook her head and shrugged.

“Mr. Cohen…” she started.

“If you think this is a little too forward

I just wanted…” Zachary was stuttering. “This is not a social call, Miss Sullivan.”

“It’s not?” she asked, raising an eyebrow over the other.

“No,” he said shaking his head. “I will be meeting a prospective partner at The Hamptons and I initially thought that I would have to get someone from HR to come with me but now that I have an assistant, I don’t see the need to.”

“I’m a secretary, actually,” Taylor pointed out.

“Well, I believe an assistant is a better title and maybe even better pay,” Zachary said, shrugging. Taylor looked at him and wondered what trick he had up his sleeve. “I can organize the overtime pay.”

Taylor sighed and then shrugged.

“Well, I guess that sounds great,” she said.

“Good. We will be leaving in an hour,” he announced as he began doing something on his desk. She could not really tell what.

“An hour?” she asked, surprised. Zachary looked up.

“Why? Is that going to be a problem?” he asked.

“Well, I have to pack and get organized and…” she started before he shook his head.

“Never mind that. We will just be gone for the weekend,” Zachary pointed out as if it was not a big deal. “We should be back here by Sunday evening.”

“Yes, but I have to go back to my place first,” she said as she looked at him.

“Where do you live? I can get someone to drive you over,” he said.

“Oh, that would be great. My apartment is over on Jefferson and Third,” she said, grinning widely, but her smile soon disappeared when she saw that he was not smiling.

“That is a good forty minutes away. One way,” he said. She nodded.

“If it helps, I pack really light,” she said but he was shaking his head.

“No, that will take too long and I have to be there by seven at the very latest,” he said.

“But I need a change of clothes,

she said, as he reached for something in his inside jacket pocket. She gasped when he handed her a credit card. “Take this. There is a store around the corner.”

Taylor shook her head.

“Mr. Cohen, I really don’t want you to take this the wrong way but this is highly inappropriate,” she said.

“What is? My asking you to come with me to The Hamptons?” he asked, as if it was the most normal thing in the world.

“For starters, yes, that. And you are handing me your platinum card at the end of my first day and by the way, it was not a very good first day,” she said and he smiled.

“Well, people have their good and bad days. Maybe today just wasn’t one of your best days,” he said. “I don’t see what that has got to do with anything, anyway. Times are a-wasting, Miss Sullivan. Get yourself a dress for tonight and maybe something for the flight back and meet me back here.”

Taylor was still hesitant about this whole thing. Sure, she did know Zachary Cohen, but only what she had read about him in the papers and magazines. She had seen him photographed with countless women and she would have hated to think that he was coming on to her or something. She was beginning to think that she understood why he had been through so many secretaries in such a short time. But at the same time, she did not want to seem disrespectful or ungrateful. After all, maybe he was just a really friendly boss

perhaps a little too friendly for comfort, but friendly all the same. And she also did not want to lose her job so soon after she had got it.

“Get yourself something to wear and meet me back here, Miss Sullivan,” Zachary said again before he turned away, leaving the card on the desk.

“What exactly do you need me to do for you at a party?” she suddenly asked.

“Well, I don’t really know this prospective business partner. I do know that he is five-eight and dark-haired, but that’s about it,” he said as he looked at her. “I need someone to case the area and give me heads up when you spot him. His name is Bernard Miller.” Taylor shook her head again.

“I don’t understand,” she said.

“Just go shopping, Miss Sullivan, and meet me back here,” he said again. “And I know all this is a little sudden. I promise to make it worth your while.”

Taylor smiled.

“I believe that my resume said that I perform tasks that are required of me,” she said.

“Well, not over the weekend,” Zachary said as he reached for something in his top drawer. She felt a shiver going down her spine when she saw that it was his checkbook. “I believe this should be considered as overtime,” he said as he scribbled something on the checkbook. “I think this should cover it.” He tore the leaf off the book and handed her the check.

Taylor gasped when she looked at the check. Ten freaking thousand dollars.

“Mr. Cohen,” she started as she looked at it. “This is too much,” she said in a whisper.

“It’s the least I can do for disrupting your weekend plans,” he said.

“But shouldn’t accounts be handling this?” Taylor asked still confused.

“Well, they would have if this was an official business thing but this is actually a personal favor, Miss Sullivan,” Zachary explained. Taylor shook her head again. It was not that she didn’t want the money. God knows that she could use an extra ten grand especially since she had been unemployed for almost an entire month. It would be a perfect nest egg.

“But what about…” she started before Zachary leaned forward.

“Take the card. Go to the store and meet me back here,” he said. She took a long minute before she took a step forward, took the card and walked out of his office. Her heart was pounding hard and fast as she slowly walked to the elevator. She was having a million and one thoughts running through her mind.

“What if I mess up and embarrass him in front of his clients and business partners?”

“What if this has nothing to do with work?”

“What if this is my first and last day at this job? And with this darned economy!”

She was almost shaking as she stepped into the elevator. She could not help but wonder what the hell she had gotten herself into.

****

Taylor was not very sure what she expected to see when they got to The Hamptons, maybe because at the back of her mind, she still thought that Zachary bringing her was part of his grand plan to

she didn’t even know what.

The Cohen property at The Hamptons was a big beachfront mansion and Taylor had been given one of the rooms upstairs. She had just changed into her soft, white, long-sleeved mini dress that blended all too well with her medium-toned skin. Of all the dresses she had tried on at the store, this was the only one which looked a little subtle. She did not want to get something that made her look too sexy now that she was getting dressed for a party that her boss had put together. As she stood in front of the mirror, she felt content that she had made the right decision as far as her outfit was concerned. Her red hair was flowing over her shoulders and she had blended her simple but elegant look with a light shade of pink lipstick. Her perfectly manicured toes were visible in the matching peep toed platform heels she had on.

“Well, here goes nothing,”
she thought as she put on the ear piece Zachary had given her on their way to The Hamptons before she walked downstairs. The place looked like a Page Six newspaper clip. She felt a shiver go down her spine as she looked around. Suddenly, she was feeling a whole new level of panic.

“I don’t know how I am going to live through this,”
she thought as he made her way towards Zachary’s guests.
