Acknowledgments

Once again, I've depended on the generosity and hospitality of others to help complete this book. My thanks go to the people of Ironton, Missouri, which, of course, bears no resemblance to Pyrite—except for the jail. Special thanks to Mayor Jack Mayes, Police Chief Joe Wilson, Pat "Who Runs City Hall" Boffman, Sgt. Roger Medley, and Ms. June Haefner of the venerable and delightful Green Roof Inn. I couldn't have finished this book, either, without the help of Lt. John Podolak and his ever-patient wife Michelle, who helped with the proofing. Thank you, Karyn, for holding the proverbial hand; Carolyn Marino, Karen Solem, and Chris Wilhide for giving me such a wonderful home at Harper, and, of course, thank you to the real Bitch Queen for the use of her exalted title. And, as ever, to P. B. It wouldn't be any fun without you.

Author's Note

It won't take long for you to realize that the technology in this book is obsolete. I wrote it in 1992, when this was all pretty advanced. Instead of trying to change it, which would ruin a lot of the suspense (as in, why the hell don't you have a cell phone?), I have decided to acknowledge that the book takes place two decades ago, when there was no internet, and VICAP was a fairly new concept.
