‘The Wild Scots have taken her captive?’
This was the bombshell. Eithne wondered how the Commander would take it. ‘No, she is not a captive. She is there of her own accord.’
Lucius Maximus stared at her in astonishment. ‘Of her own accord? What the hell do you mean by that? This is my daughter you are talking about, not some village slut.’
‘I have the utmost respect for your position, sir. But you asked me to tell you the whole truth. And the truth is that your daughter is having a relationship with a senior warrior of the clan.’
Lucius Maximus was having trouble controlling himself now. He swallowed hard, and spoke in a low voice that was full of menace.
‘What kind of relationship, exactly?’
Eithne hesitated…reluctant to say the words. But it was too late to back out now. ‘I apologize for being the one to bring you this news, sir. But the fact is that the relationship is a sexual one.’
The Commanders’ eyes were almost bulging now. ‘Are you suggesting that my daughter is sleeping with a Barbarian? Think carefully before you answer…your life may depend on your reply.’
Eithne was beginning to think this had been a bad idea. The Commander was on the point of exploding with anger. But she had to continue what she had started.
‘You asked for the truth, and yes – the truth is that your daughter is sleeping with a Scot. I have first-hand evidence of that fact. I regret being the bearer of bad news, but it is not me that you should be angry with.’
Lucius Maximus turned away. He seemed to be a broken man – his anger and defiance now turned to despair. When he looked at Eithne again, his eyes were red and bloodshot.
‘How did this happen?’
‘That’s something that I cannot help you with, I’m afraid. I have no knowledge of how they came to be together. Believe me, the situation was a great shock to me, too. I only know that they slept in the same bed chamber last night.’
‘Good Gods…I see now you must be telling the truth. No-one would dare to come here and present a lie about such a matter to my face. So tell me…who is this man, exactly? I want him brought to me alive. And when I get hold of him, I will personally tear him limb from limb. So who is he?’
Eithne relaxed a little. She was going to enjoy sharing this bit of information.
‘His name is Blaine, and he is the leader of our people. They call him the King of the Scots.’
‘King of the Scots?’ Lucius thundered. ‘When I get hold of him, he will be the King of the Dead.’
