She went in
to London one day, alone, in the Jaguar, and visited the magazine. Had tea with Susie and Rachel. She noticed that Rebecca was gone.

“What happened to Rebecca?” she asked Susie.

Susie smiled. “Oh, she threw a temper tantrum last week and started to swear at young Rachel here, because Rachel got to do an interview with some young actor and Rebecca wanted to go along. Rachel, quite rightly, told her no, and not to be unprofessional. The language that came out of Rebecca’s mouth!

“Unfortunately for Rebecca, Geoffrey was within earshot. He just turned to her and told her to clean her desk out, that nobody spoke to Rachel like that.”

Susie smiled again. “I liked that, Geoffrey sticking up for a junior reporter against his ex-wife’s niece.”

Rachel smiled a secret smile. Jennie found the corners of her
own mouth turning up.

“How’s everybody’s love life,” Jennie asked.

Susie grinned. “Jerome got his girlfriend pregnant. He’s on his honeymoon now.

“I went out with Geoffrey’s brother a couple of times, well, more than a couple of times. George is in Australia right now, inspecting their magazines down under.
He calls me every day. When he comes back, he says we’re going to Italy for a week. He’s lovely, Jennie. Makes me feel so special. But I have no illusions. He’s very rich, you know, and I’m just a woman in my mid thirties who works for them. I’m sure he has a black book full of beautiful young women…I don’t talk about it here at work. Rachel is the only one who knows.”

Jennie smiled at Susie. “Sometimes fantasies come true, Susie. Mine did.”

Rachel smiled a secret sad smile. “Yes, Jennie. Sometimes fantasies do come true, and you find love where you don’t expect to. Sometimes, you learn to treasure each day, and hope that it lasts, your fantasy, for another twenty four hours.”

Jennie looked at her kindly. “And sometimes, Rachel, he loves you back, and you don’t realize it. Sometimes, he’s afraid, secretly, that you might leave him.”

Rachel looked at her sharply, but said nothing.

Jennie stopped by the door of Rachel’s office on her way out. “Geoffrey came and visited us in Berkshire the other day, Rachel…”

“Did he?”

“Yes, he did. He’d like to get married and have a family, Rachel.”

“I’m sure, like his brother, he must have a little black book, Jennie.”

“I don’t think so, Rachel. I think he
’s quite content with what he has at home…”

The smile on Rachel’s face lit up the room.

“Sometimes, Rachel, fantasies are the same.”

“Sometimes, Jennie, they are.” Rachel paused. “I fantasize about getting married and having a family too,
Jennie.”

“Perhaps you could
tell him that, tonight, in bed. That it would be nice to make a baby, Rachel.”

“I’m surprised he told you, about home.”

“Don’t be, Rachel. He loves you. He wanted to talk about you, and of course he can’t, because of his silly non-fraternization rule.”

Rachel thought about Jennie’s words.

That evening, as she and Geoffrey lay in bed, watching the late evening news, she cuddled a little closer. He smiled down at her. She’d been very pleasing tonight, very loving.

“You know, Geoffrey,
I’m starting to get stirrings…

“Oh dear,” he thought, “She’s going to tell me she needs her freedom, that I’m too old for her. Well, I expected it, didn’t I?” and he felt sad.

Aloud he said, “Are you, Rachel?”

“Yes, Geoffrey. Stirrings I never had before. I’d like to have a baby, Geoffrey. I’d like to have your baby.”

“Would you, Rachel? Would you really?”

“I would.”

“Well, little one, I think we’d better get married then, before we get you pregnant, don’t you?”

“I’d like that, darling. I’d like that more than anything, getting married to you. I’ll even promise to obey you, Geoffrey.”

Geoffrey howled.

They had a very big wedding, eight weeks later. Jennie was Rachel’s only attendant.

Jennie woke up a few mornings after that wedding and was horribly sick. She barely made it into the bathroom, and threw up into the toilet.  Mick was sleeping.  She rinsed her mouth out with mint mouthwash, and felt her breasts.  A little swollen, she thought, and definitely tender…she smiled.  She’d walk down to the chemist presently and buy a pregnancy test.  No use getting her husband’s hopes up if she was wrong.  She glanced at the clock. It was already nine.  Jennie slipped a dress out of the wardrobe and a pair of sandals.  She put some money into her pocket, and let herself quietly out of the bedroom.

Jennie
was at the chemist fifteen minutes later. She walked home slowly, enjoying the English summer morning. As soon as she got back she slipped into a downstairs powder room and pulled out her purchase….

Mick was up, having a cup of tea on the terrace.  She sat down with him, and poured herself a cup.

“I reached for you and you weren’
t there, Jennie.  That’s the first morning since we met that you haven’t been in my bed when I woke up.”

Jennie
smiled at him.  “I hoped you would still be sleeping when I got back from my walk…”

“I’
ve been up about twenty minutes.  But I haven’t showered…” Mick smiled. “I’ll have to think about whether not being in bed with me is naughty. Do you want me to spank your lovely bottom until it’s red?”

The both laughed.

“No, darling.  Unlike Rachel, spanking would turn me off, not on…but a shower with you, on the other hand…”

“Let’
s finish our tea, then, shall we and go up and have a shower?”

And they did.

“Feel my belly, Mick…”

“Nice and flat, Jennie, so sexy, your belly…”

“It isn’t going to be flat for long, Mick…”

“No? Putting on weight, are you?”

“Only temporarily, darling, only for a few months….”

It went right over his head.

“Be gentle with my tits, darling, you’re washing them so enthusiastically, and they are a little tender.”

“They seem a little bigger, Jennie. Or is that just my imagination?”

“No, darling, they are a little bigger. I wonder how big they’ll get, over the next few months?”

“They’re so perfect now, Jennie…” a dim light bulb was switched on in Mick’s head
, but it was very dim…”but why do you think they’ll get bigger, sweetheart? Why do you think you’ll gain weight, and get a bigger belly?”

“Will you still love me, Mick, with a big belly
, and cravings for strange food? I don’t want pickles and ice cream, but I must admit, I’m beginning to crave chocolate and onions. Do you think Cook could make something with chocolate and onions?”

Mick started to laugh.  “Really, Jennie? Chocolate and onions? I think you’re pulling my leg…”

Jennie snickered. “I am, Mick, but ladies in my condition crave strange things, you know. I’m sure I’ll get some strange craving soon…as soon as I stop being sick in the morning.”

“Were you sick this morning, Jennie?” Mick was alarmed.

“Yes, Mick, I was. Sick this morning, and I expect tomorrow morning. But the chemist says dry toast and tea work very well or crackers and ginger ale, for some women…”

“Is this something going around?”

“Only around women with virile partners,
baby
.”

“Baby? Baby? Oh, Jennie…we’re going to have a baby!”

“We are indeed, darling. Do you think Charles will write it into the next film?”
