They are clear and simple enough for all of us to comprehend, but consider the effect on people who regularly traveled by ship, who daily might have placed a bit in a horse’s mouth, or who got their water from wells. How would James’s choice of metaphors work with such people?

 

 

 

 

 

 

Now suppose James were writing to people in your own culture. Do you think he would use the same examples? If not, what are three other items he might choose to get our attention?
